MOM.exe problems

Hello [H]

I'm having a problem with a certain mom.exe. Now, I know there were disputes as to whether it is legitimate or not, but that's not my concern. I recently updated my 4850 drivers/CCC and mom.exe started to well, bug out. It constantly spawns a new instance of itself and subsequently crashes. It does this about 5-10 times per second.

This cycle manages to eat up 100% up my second core (running a q6600) and keeps my cursor in "loading mode" (it always has the little hour glass next to it).

The real problem is what's going on with the rest of my system. I have no taskbar and xp is somehow stuck in the windows 98 theme. Most importantly, system restore won't run.
It just says "System Restore cannot protect your computer at this time. Restart your computer and try again"

Deleting mom.exe/.dlls out the the ATi\ati.ace\core-static folder stops the cpu use and loading cursor, but I am still unable to run system restore to fix all of the little quirks that have popped up. Does this seem like something that could have resulted from a bugged .exe, or does it sounds like malware?

Also, I'm not sure if this has any impact, but I reinstalled .net framework and manually installed a couple hotfixes before everything started to bug out. Might this be the culprit?

The .NET is most definitely the culprit. Completely uninstall .NET 2.0, and CCC. Then, install .NET and updates, and reinstall CCC, but make sure you uncheck the .NET install in the ATI package. This was a serious bitch for me on my mom's computer a few months back.

Okay, I'll definintely try this when I get home. As I've been using the computer I've noticed a couple more things that are wrong:
When attempting to search, nothing appears where the dialouge and dog should be
Cannot drag/drop
Horrible start up/shut down times

Sound like these are also caused by the .Net?

Also thank you for the advice.

same thing here.What I did:

uninstall ALL ati software.
uninstall ALL .NET installations
Shutdown.
Do a windows startup repair
reboot and dl all updates through WU
install ati catalyst package.

Well I'm not sure wtf happened to my windows install, but I can't copy/paste, and whenever I attempt to install/uninstall software it tells me I don't have access to the windows installed service even though I know its installed and I'm on an admin account.

I think I'm just gonna nuke the install and start over.

Does anybody know how to move files from one drive to another without drag/dropping or copy/pasting? I'd like to at least keep my files :(

EDIT: I guess my sound drivers are bad too. I'm starting to think that this is actually malware at the cause of this.

So much more concise than my post. Do this.

....and what about Vista? .NET 2.0 is built in to Vista and you can't uninstall it.

I'm having the exact same issue, so much so that CCC errors when I try to reinstall it.

Ok, I really have no clue what's going on now. I got all of my files backed up on a secondary drive, and tried to format my C drive but the windows installer crashes. When I get to the part where you choose which partition to install on/format the drive, the C drive cannot be accessed. Attempting to install on or format the drive causes Windows to crash out with the error "PAGE FAULT IN UNPAGED AREA" or "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". The same happens if I attempt to format the drive with the FORMAT command in Windows recovery console.

Anybody know why this is happening? I don't think its a hardware problem, as both my hard drive and RAM work just fine; the only problems are the glitches in Windows. I'm thinking about finding a windows 98 floppy and using that to try and format the drive before putting the XP disc in, since my problems seem to be originating from XP. Would this work?

Follow my directions above. I have vista x64 and it worked just fine after doing those.

If you want to format etc, go download gparted (google it). WAY faster and has a GUI.

Would this serve my purposes? This looks like its a tool to reorganize partitions from inside the OS, Linux no less. I need an alternative to fdisk, preferably something that doesn't need to load windows, as a severely corrupted install of XP seems to be the cause of my problems.

gparted is a live cd based on a gnome gui. Trust me, you don't have to know ANYTHING about linux to use it (I'm linux retarded). Just burn it to cd, boot from it and follow the directions. It's fantastic.
Yes you can reorganize and resize partitions, but you can also use it to format the disk etc.
The other good part about it is that because it is not windows, if gparted fails, your hardware is hosed somehow..

To show how easy it is to use, I didn't even realize it was Linux-based. So, that is technically my only experience with Linux of which I am aware.
