NWN 2 question

So I never picked up NWN 2 because I heard it had a LOT of problems. Since then I assume there have been a ton of patches to help fix the game up. Then supposedly the first expansion made the game a lot better, and there is now a new expansion coming out that is meant to be just as good or even better.

My question is, If I buy NWN 2, and get the expansions, where do I start? I would obviously want to play through the NWN 2 story, but do the expansions just add content and fix stuff up from the original game or do you need to finish the NWN 2 content and then enter the expansion content? Maybe someone can help me with this.

Funny you mention this. I've been contemplating the same thing. I own NWN2, but only played it for a short while due to the issues it had. I've read from a few sources that the game is MUCH better now.

The latest expansion, Mask of the Betrayer, has gotten pretty good reviews. I believe it adds new content as well as classes and a few more things. I think it would be best to play through NWN2 first then start MoTB so that you can familiarize yourself with the game. I would install both though so you get some of the new content added with the expansion.

The newest expansion is going to be released mid November so you've got some time.

What about the toolset? Is it more streamlined? Simpler to use? I'm fairly interested in that.

you say to finish NWN 2 first before the expansion... does that mean the expansion comes AFTER the original game? Like are they essentially two separate things or are they intertwined?

I played both the original and the expansion, and although you're supposed to be the same character in both campaigns, there were only a few references where this matters. They're basically unrelated but it's set up so you can use a single character through the main campaign then the expansion. But the expansion is definitely shorter and more interesting (I thought), so that might be better if you only have time for one.

I don't know about the technical problems (I played it a while after it came out). Never used the toolkit or any custom modules either.

I'd play through the orignal before the first expansion, but there are very few references back to the orginal so it doesn't really matter. I prefered the orginal to the expansion pack.

The new expansion looks really good.

Pick up NWN2 Gold and play Mask of the Betrayer. It's head and shoulders above the original campaign.

So if I do pick them both up, will the expansion patch the original NWN 2? Or do I need to go somewhere to get the patches for NWN 2 (which I hear are totally necessary or else the game runs like crap).

The NWN2 Forum has a sticky with details on the installation. If I remember correctly you have to install the original game, then expansion and then do the updater.

I have no experience with the toolset...sorry.

I'm going to be picking up MoTB this weekend and diving in! Still need to finish The WItcher EE though.

Edit: NWN2 has an awesome "Updater" that patches the game for you. You'll see an option for it once you've installed the game.

Play it all the way through from original to expansion. Its a good game IMO, especially the expansion.

NWN2's launcher has a patch button right on it, just install everything then hit that button.

ok but install the expansion before updating, right? Sorry, just trying to make sure so I don't bork the game!

I own both and both were great. I loved the original game and the expansion just built on that.

I just wish you didn't have to download the custom files for online play. (i.e download when you try joining the server, instead of finding a server, going to a website, download, then play)

Fornarmr,
Yes, install game, install expansion. Then hit update button before playing.

I appreciate a good story-driven RPG but the only thing is that I am playing WAR right now so I dunno if I should buy this game only to not put much time into it. Decisions...
