So the big deal today on the Blu-ray front is that Netflix has sent out an e-mail to customers saying they will be charging an additional dollar per month for those people that get Blu-ray movies. To me, that seems more than reasonable but I know some of you will not be thrilled with the price hike…even if it is only a buck.

We knew it was coming, but today Netflix made it official--starting in November, those that rent Blu-ray movies will be charged an extra dollar, in addition to standard subscription fees. The move is hardly a surprise, considering Netflix's CEO mentioned that a surcharge was coming in April, but home theater fans may still be taken aback since the company has never charged more for Blu-ray Discs before.

Weird. Why don't they just hike the price say like 23 cents for everyone instead of singling formats out.

Dollar a month I guess is nothing.

Not much of a problem I honestly think. Netflix is more then reasonable with this offer.

For only $0.03 a day, you can sponsor a poor orphaned Blu-ray disc that comes from a third world country ravaged by the HDDVD-BR War of 2007. Won't you do your part to help give these poor discs a new, loving home where they feel welcomed and become part of your lives?

Please, it's only a dollar a month to do your part.

Well, I hope Blockbuster doesn't follow suit; they aren't charging us a dollar extra per month to rent High Def through the mail, nor are we charged extra to exchange for Blu-Ray in-store.

Give a man a Blu-ray disk, he'll watch a movie for a day. Teach a man to make Blu-ray disk, he'll watch movies for a lifetime. :D

Hey netflix how about BUYING more blu-ray discs? I'm getting tired of say like Kill Bill Vol 1 sitting at VERY LONG WAIT ever since it was released. Also how about Dark City? And why the heck is The Matrix now in the saved queue when reloaded/Revolutions/animatrix in queue for Oct 14th?

Exactly, it takes forever to get new releases these days. Now they're going to charge more for it, Blockbuster is looking better and better, especially since I can return at the store.

Seems like the consensus is, "$1 bump, big whoop."

Hate to play devil's advocate, but what if it's an extra dollar half a year from now? And then an extra dollar half a year from then?

Would you be saying the same thing in a year or two when they charge $3 more for blu-ray rentals?

One reason why I left bb.com was the half yearly price hikes coupled with the fact that they stopped giving me two free game coupons a month.

Because I shouldn't subsidize your HD movie rentals. ;)

That's not good news IMHO- not becuae we will pay a dollar more, but it would indicate to me that it is true Blu-ray is still not being adopted very quickly.

I'm glad they are doing it this way. It's not like if they had hiked the price for everyone I would have canceled my subscription, but it's nice to know that they actually think about their customer base. I've actually been really pleased with Netflix recently, especially after their partnership with Starz to actually give the online player a decent number of movies.

I don't use netflix. however, if I did this would piss me off.BR is having enough acceptance issues without this kind of crap. sure the movies cost them more than dvd but it's not like they aren't going to make that back over the years just like when dvd was new to market.

I know when they started offering HD-DVD they started charging fee of also a dollar, so is this the second hike for Blu-Ray?

yeah I guess inflation is a bad thing. Like gas was $1.25 a gallon 20 years ago and McDonalds Big Mac was $0.10 a year ago :p

It doesn't mater where it starts at. It's going to go up whether we like it or not.

I am going to post what I responded on with Gizmodo, I received an email this morning from Netflix also but with the opposite information.

It's not a $1 a month people...It's $12 a year! Doesn't sound so good now does it?

lol

BR acceptance isn't a Netflix issue - in fact, they'd probably be happier if everyone just stuck with DVDs. If anything, if the studios want to push BR to a bigger market they should subsidize the costs for Netflix so it doesn't cost the consumer anything more in the end. Like I said a $1 increase wouldn't make me cancel my subscription, but if all I had to do was buy a BR player (which is still not cheap) to get a higher quality viewing experience I would strongly think about it. Right now DVDs are fine by me, even though I have the equipment to take advantage of BR.

I think this post as been misinterpreted, after going over my email which says I will be going from 2USD to 1USD. I believe what has happened here is the image taker has just signed up to receive Netflix and there is an added cost (which has always been there). The added cost use to be 2USD, and is now 1USD; just that this image taker is shocked that they are charging a premium to receive the Blu-ray movies.

Netflix is a great deal, and HD is premium content...makes sense to me in a time where very few companies offer such a great deal to customers.

Unfortunately I see the time coming where they jack the prices up for everyone...

Now Video Podcasts, on the other hand, are the other end of the spectrum. $23.99 for a single season of Southpark? on an IPOD SCREEN? wtfbbq

I sure hope this extra $1 means that every Blu-Ray in my queue goes from very long wait to available. I had the Simpsons movie in my rental queue for 3 @#% months before Netflix sent it. Some other titles would show up weeks after release even though they were at the top of my queue on release day. Netflix had better be prepared for the folks that pay the extra $1 a month to not have to wait several weeks for a particular title to arrive.

i was not happy when i saw this in the mail today... if they didn't need to do it before, why should they start now?

The market is changing, they probably have to increase price. They have to buy a huge inventory of DVD's, and they calculated they can do that for X amount of dollars per plan.

Now they have to go and stock up on BR movies which cost them more, so they have to raise the price to compensate. And somehow this pisses some of you off. Did you expect them to pay more and not increase price? That's an easy way to lose money. Or would you rather them increase the amount across the board, so that everyone can pay for HD movies, even if they don't use them?

So what does this come down to for BR rentals, $17.99 a month for 3 at a time, unlimited? Half the cost of a new BR release? Yeah, seems like a raw deal to me!

I never was charge extra for HD-DVD or Blu-ray support in the past.

That is interesting, I have only had my account for a month or two now since I wanted to start picking up more movies instead of justing buying them all to see if I liked them. Maybe they started charging after Blu-ray was the only HD format?

I'm up for it if it indeed speeds up the new releases..

I find it ridiculous to have to wait over a month ( or even more ) to rent out the new popular blu rays.

We'll see..

probably to do this:

Dollar a month I guess is nothing.

Because BR is the minority. Why should people without a BR player have to pay extra for the more expensive BR discs?

I happily pay an extra $1 per month. Still half the cost of buying 1 BR a month....

Um, as the cost of the formats(BR much more expensive than DVD) and postage goes up, the price of th emonthly service will always be going up.

if you don't like it, pay even more per movie renting them in the store.

it is the players fault, not the cost of the DVD. no one is buying the players because the price of the player is too high.

I have a PS3 and had blue ray disk as default. i turned off all blue rays. there is no way i am spending an extra dollar when it doesn't cost more then a dvd.

Does everybody here realize that satelite and cable companies charge extra for HD content? Depending on your satelite or cable plan it can cost anywhere from 10% to 25% of your total bill just to add HD content. A dollar doesn't seem like much for Netflix to ask.

Also, as a none Blu-Ray owning Netflix customer I appreciate not being forced to subsidize other customers.

You make a metric shitload of sense.

And seriously, if you can afford a Blu-ray player you can afford $12 a year extra for rentals.
