New Video card, or time for new CPU/Mobo?

Hi All--

As this is the only place I come for reliable hardware advice, I figured I'd toss this out here and see what you folks think. I just bought a new Sony Bravia 32" LCD to use as my computer monitor, as well as serve as my PS3/TV display while I'm staying away from home with family. I'll be heading home in a couple months, and will be using it strictly as my PC monitor. Now that I have my dream display, I'm thinking I might have to upgrade my rig to drive it, especially with all the new games coming over the next few months (FALLOUT 3!!!!) I have Crysis Warhead, and can really only run it at the medium levels currently, and while it still looks great and is fun to play, I know it's time to start thinking hardware upgrade again.

My main question is, will a current-gen video card (GTX260) still give me a significant increase over an 8800GTS 320 on an Athlon X2 5000+, or should I be looking at a new mobo/CPU? I've got an Asus 939 board now, so anything higher pretty much means starting all over, so if a new video card will do the job, I'd just as soon go that route, but if I'm stretching the old X2 to it's limit, I may need to plan on the more complete upgrade. So what do you think? Will the X2 5000 still do the job with a current-gen video card?

Thanks!

I'd say the X2 5000+ will be enough for GTX 260. Granted your FPS might be higher with an Intel build but the X2 5000+ will be enough. Just make sure you have a quality PSU to power the GTX 260.

I'm in the same boat. Whats the best power supply for this upgrade? I haven't been following the new tech too closely recently, so I'm not sure what the current 'it' model is.

Right now, this PSU is one of the best deals out now for a quality PSU:
Antec Earthwatts 650W PSU - $80

No you do not need a 650W PSU for your PC. A good quality 500W PSU should be sufficient. However, considering that many good quality 500W PSUs are around $80 anyway, the Earthwatts 650W PSU is a great choice at that price.

Thanks Danny... I've got an Antec 600w, so I should be good on the PSU front. I may also upgrade from 2gb to 4gb of RAM, especially since it's cheap, figure it can't hurt. Thanks for the feedback!

Actually it's a 650w Trupower Trio, I had to pop the side panel off to check. Should definitely do the job for whatever I throw at it.
