Well, my friend just left my house after dropping off his laptop (I offered to take a look).

The laptop is a HP Pavilion dv2000 purchased just over an year ago. It has just the standard warranty and thus, it isn't eligible to get fixed. From my phone calls it is not possible to get an extended warranty for the laptop.

So after turning on the computer via AC or battery power there is no video (no BIOS/boot screen) on the internal LCD monitor or an external hooked up via VGA. There are no motherboard beeps other than one initial one. The HDD doesn't spin up much after pressing the power button. HDD is tested to be good (tested on my desktop).

He also wants me to build him a desktop for around $300 (planned before laptop died). And laptop was going to be used as a secondary PC.

Also before it died, according to him the laptop got super hot (far hotter than his brothers Thinkpad).

Specs of laptop:
Turion 64 x2 (I don't know speed...no boot screen)
2GB DDR2 800
160GB HDD Seagate Momentus 5400.3
14.1" 1280 x 800 LCD
nVidia 6025
Vista Home Premium

Bad motherboard, most likely covered under an HP recall.. Contact HP & give them the serial number, they'll let you know.

Thanks I'll call HP tomorrow and see what they say.

The laptops containing integrated nVidia graphics aren't covered by the recall. Only dedicated GPUs are affected.

You sure? I work for the Geek Squad (yeah, I know..) and have shipped several lappys out that have NVidia integrated GPUs that have been repaired out of warranty via a recall for the non-POSTing issue.

I'm pretty certain, since my own particular dv2000 model (dv2404) isn't covered for that reason, and because the defect that is the reason for the recall is related to nVidia's mobile G8x series GPUs specifically. It may be possible to slip one by them though, but I wouldn't know about that. It's also possible that since you're working for Geek Squad, HP was just accepting all the laptops you guys sent back.

I think all credit card companies have "Extended Warranty Program," where they double your original manufacturer’s warranty. Have your friend call his CC company and ask them about it.

UPDATE: Apparently the model my friend had was covered (and has integrated nVidia) so we're good.
