I can't wait for mine!!!

With so many other devices out there to develop for like the psp, ds, iphone, and windows mobile/android phones, I don't see this catching on. Mobile phones are taking the best part of open source, that anyone can develop for it, and giving people a way to actually make money through hosted application stores. Why would they develop on this instead?

I had an Atari Lynx. Anyone remember those? It was superior to the GameBoy in every way. First to market with a color screen (years before GameBoy) and a full color screen at that. It allowed up to 4 players to link together to play team games (unlike only two players with GameBoy). It was an incredible hand-held. You could even switch from right-handed to left-handed operation, for all to enjoy. It died because of the huge support that was being thrown to its opponents. There wasn't enough money to start developing/advertising for a whole new product at that time.

As Spaceman_Spiff said, and as will be the case here, there is only enough support for the handheld industry as a whole, and right now it is stretched with Nintendo, Sony, Apple, and all manner of other PDA / cell phone devices.

This just doesn't stand a chance, no matter how good the hardware. Better to try to sell it to Nintendo, Sony, or Apple and let them hack it up and remake it as the new "DS", "PSP", "iPhone" successor.

There is plenty of support for homebrew/open source handhelds. There have been a slew of these devices over the years, and they've all been pretty popular (not Nintendo DS popular) but very successful none the less. This is probably the most powerful hand held machine out there and it should be interesting.

I might get one; not sure. The price is awful steep, but it's worth it for the hardware. I just don't know how much I'd use it after as I don't have much time anymore. There will be some pretty cool stuff released for it though, I'm sure!

Great! Another device I'll have to carry with me, along with an iPod, PDA, and Cellphone.

I've already got LJP for NES games on my Palm Centro. Tokyo Xtreme Racer would be nice again though...... *starts dreaming*

I'll grab one of the ones from second batch.

EDIT: And I don't understand why people are bashing the support of this. There are over 1000 programmers anxiously waiting for the past months on the forums and the device hasn't even hit yet.

Yea exactly, theres thousands and thousands of people that have been waiting for this. Im one of those. Many developers are excited. Open Source pwns closed source. DS and PSP are testaments. Their homebrewing community is small even put together compared to the GP2x (the Pandora is a successor to the gp2x). The homebrewing community of the Gp2x is gigantic in size. And the apps that come out for it are seriously close to commercial quality and sometimes better then commerical. I belive this console is gonna be a big hit, but surely not as big as the ds or the psp, but maybe if this pandora gets enough attention and every one thats available is bought, Then maybe the Pandora 2 will have much better advertising, you gotta start small, and who knows Pandora could be the next biggest handheld maker in 10 years.

And yes i am getting the pandora from the 2nd batch

What is the importance of 'second batch'?

I guess because people think they'll have a different revision by January 2009...

Which I don't think so, the devs said the possibility of making a second edition with tweaks/fix/changes are unlikely.

I put my pre-order in today :D

This goes along with the questions of why to compare it to a smart phone, but the reality is that the line between closed and open source is heavily blurred. Sure, you can't modify the os on your android or iphone, but anyone who wants to can develop software for it. They both have excellent development apis and a community many times larger than a smaller device like this will have. With is being open source, the types of games you will see will most definitely be closer to iphone type casual games, and not the depth and production values of larger ds and psp titles. It'll probably have some interesting stuff, but what makes it better than the alternatives? There's just so much out there I don't have time to play with all of it.

So why exactly would i want to buy it instead of Asus eee, MSI wind or Acer Aspire One ?

I hope they make a killing on hardware sales, because their whole open source, homebrew slant is going to ensure that no one is going to make money on software with this.

And I'm not talking about piracy.
