Well its been a year since I last "played" computer games. I mean I do sometimes play CS1.6 or CSS, but thats it. My computer was shit. Now I am building a new computer and should have a decent rig.

What games have come out in the past year that are amazing?

I like FPS, and MMO are also okay!

What is Crysis Warhead? Is it like the original Crysis? What is this Spore?

I play most of my games on Xbox 360 and PS3!

First game you'll want to play is Valve's Portal. Then you have the other ones: Call of Duty 4, Crysis, HL2: Episode 2 and STALKER. If you never played Doom 3 or Prey, definitely check those out as well. Quake Wars is pretty good, I thought, but you may or may not be able to get into it. BioShock is okay if you can somehow grapple with the silly-ass mouse acceleration.

Crysis Warhead is the "expansion" to Crysis, and it's basically a re-telling of the original from another perspective (with new stuff tossed in, obviously).

I'm going to assume the question about Spore was a joke :)

COD4, Crysis, Orange Box, Bioshock, STALKER. in that order.

Team Fortress 2 is, IMO, the best multiplayer shooter out there. It's a class-based shooter that's heay on teamwork. Keep in mind that it's not intended to be ultra-realistic. It's like playing a Pixar movie... with a lot of blood =) The game is unique, and it's a lot of fun.

For your more traditional shooter, Cod 4 is probably the way to go.

The easiest way to explain Spore is to describe it as collection of smaller games chained together with some kind of story. Check out the Wiki page for it on Wikipedia.

Obviously give Crysis a run through if you can.... the visuals are supposedly amazing. Gears of War looks really sharp on the PC, and the Brumak fight looks like fun. STALKER is good, but very glitchy and very involved.

If you buy one box, make it the Orange Box. For under $50 (most places), you get 5 really really good fps games. Portal and TF2 alone are worth that much.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition (which comes out in a week or so)

Start with Bioshock.

I was in a similar position about 6 months ago. I built my new rig and missed out on a few years of gaming. Here's my thoughts:

If you like multiplayer:
Orange Box - TF2 is just plain great if you can get over the style.
Call of Duty 4
Battlefield 2 - It's older but you didn't mention ever playing it. It's great for a larger scale semi-realistic shooter with vehicles.

If you like single player:
Orange Box - Portal is very cool as is HL2 if you never played the episodes, etc.
Call of Duty 4
STALKER - My favorite game since the original Half-Life. It is complicated and involved though so steer clear if you just want to shoot 'em up. Also of note, I got it unopened on eBay for $10.
Crysis - Neat shooter and the best graphics ever...If you can run it.
FEAR - Cool slow-mo gunplay. You can get the game with both expansions new at BB for $20.

I've heard good things about Bioshock but haven't gotten around to it. Crysis: Warhead, STALKER: Clear Sky, and Far Cry 2 are some good shooters coming out now'ish.

Oblivion, COD4, The Witcher, Stalker, GRID, BioShock, World in Conflict.

Forget fuckin Crysis man its not worth it.

Portal, Bioshock, TF2 for something different.

Others for better of the same.

Well here is going to be my rig.

2GB DDR2-800 Ram
E2180 OC 3.5GHz
8600GTS XXX 256MB

Its a temp rig. In december planning to get Q6660 and 9800!

Agreed, but scratch Doom 3. and COD4.

Prey is an excellent FPS if you can find it. I just picked up a copy at Half Priced Books for $8.

Orange box without a doubt, portal rocks, TF2 is a blast and the HL series are classics.

Bioshock is $20 on steam so its worth buying. Farcry is only $10 so thats a toss up, i always found it to be highly overrated but others will disagree. The original stalker is a great game and only $20 as well.

Steam is the way to go, good prices on most games and thier "backed up" for life

Bioshock is great, but stop playing after the "Golf club" scene. The game does a vertical drop after that.

Medieval 2: Total War
Sins of a Solar Empire
World in Conflict
Company of Heroes

Orange Box

imo this is one of the best values for money right now.
Agreed. If you are going to buy only one thing, this would be it. Otherwise, as others have said, STALKER, FEAR, Crysis, The Witcher EE, Bioshock, CoD4, and even Titan Quest are all pretty badass games that should be played. Although, I haven't beaten them all yet, they provide some good time killing fun.

Are you an SP or MP player? I don't like SP games, so I didn't really like Bioshock, didn't do much for me. I thought spore sucked too.

I HIGHLY recommend CoD4. I'd say that's the best game I've played in a long time. However, I tend to play 1 or 2 FPS games online for like 5-6 years, so who am I to talk. Last game I got really addicted to was DoD:Source.

I have to make one exception for my no SP games rule...Mass Effect (if you don't have it for console) was really good.

Bioshock sucked and got great reviews.
STALKER SoC was awesome and got mediocre reviews.

Just don't look at numbers from review sites.

All the necessary ones have been mentioned however if you get one of the crysis games, get the original, better gfx and you get longer to crawl about in the gorgeous undergrowth admiring the scenery.

Like alot of games, i would make sure you have the comp to run it properly.

Sorry to hijack your thread but I have a similar albeit more specific question: Of the following games which should I buy?

- STALKER
- ET: Quake Wars
- Battlefield 2/2142
- Company of Heroes

if you can only choose one, then go with BF2.

Yes, only one because I'm also going to buy The Orange Box and The Witcher EE this month :p
