I've been trying to install Vista Home Premium. The setup for Vista starts and then shuts down right after it says "Windows is loading files...". The CPU temp at this point is 38° C, so I know it's not an overheating issue. I know it's not the operating system dvd because the same thing happens when I try to load XP. With XP it makes it all the way to the Windows setup and shuts down while loading devices. I swapped out the optical drive and it does the same stuff.

Any help you guys could give would be great. :D

Hi. I'm not an expert but I would look at your ram. Either try one stick at a time or a known good stick. I recently bought the exact same ram from Newegg and it was DOA. Good luck.

I just bought two more sticks today, came home and slapped them in, to make sure it wasn't that ><

I have the same MB as you. Same ram. E8400 stock.I had to update the Bios to ver. 1.6 for it to run. I also increased the ram voltage to 1.9. Beyond that, I dont know what to tell you. Everything runs great. Sorry I couldn't help more.

I had to update the Bios to ver. 1.6 for it to run.

Did you flash the bios from a floppy or a usb drive?

It says on MSI's site that I should be good running ver. 1.4 and my board came with 1.5, so I think I'm cool there.

thanks for your help btw

I used a floppy. I dont have a USB drive. It might be worthwhile updating to the latest Bios ( ver.1.7 ) You could also try a different Harddrive. Mabey your new one has a problem. Also check all your connections. You could have a loose one somewhere.

Tried a brand new hd and reformatted an old one. Checked all the connections and they are all solid, plus if it were a connection problem, I'd have a hard time even accessing the hard drive and it's going to the install files on the hd before it continues the XP install from the DVD.

I think it's a mobo problem at this point. It's the only thing I haven't swapped out yet. I think I'll go pick one up later to see if that's the issue.

edit** Tried loading Ubuntu 8.04 and the power cut off right after it said "Loading Linux Kernel". Now I know it's a hardware issue :D

Swap out your power supply. Also check to see if you have a screw or standoff out of place between the MB and the backplate. That can cause a power cutoff too.

I did swap out the PSU already. had an earthwatts 500 there before when the issue started. good point about the standoffs though, ill double check that.

It's going to be your Mother Board, probably with a bad Rom Bios, Rom Bios is a Power on self test, that tells what files need to be executed in order for your pc to start working.

Last time I had that problem I tracked it back to an nvida raid driver.

Which is to say it may be a driver. Can you get into safe mode?

So instead of just buying a new mobo, I decided to give it one last shot. I booted from a floppy and flashed the BIOS with a pendrive. Even with BIOS Ver. 1.7 it still does the same thing. What a rough one, tried to save her but I don't think it's gonna work out :(

Problem solved. Just got a eVGA nForce 780i SLI motherboard and XP is runnin smooth.

Thanks for all the advice guys. peace
