Latching Sata Cables FTW!

Next on [H]: Case fans for your Case! ;)

Seriously, you guys need to start video at some point and wading into it like this is a good idea. [H] is often linked as a reliable, professional, source, so even though you may not want to do the pain in the ass script, you should probably do it when you decide to get serious.

I wonder how hard it would be to do a good capture of gaming in your video card reviews to show the smoothness of a gaming sequence? The capture software would probably slow the machine down a bit, and add more time to the reviews I guess but as a supplement to your regular reviews, the videos could really add value I believe. And besides, in a real world gaming environment would there not be some software running in the background of a PC anyways?

On another note: Steve is one big mofo, so don't get him to do these reviews as all we would see would be his arms lol

I like the idea of no script, a bit more informal with the info. That's something I am likely to want to watch in the future. I am also one of the morons who have never seen this. This is great. I am going to order some.
Thanks

Maybe not a script, but an outline to guide you through. Half the fun is hearing the extemporaneous commentary. I'd never heard of locking SATA cables before this, so to me this is new.

Videos on [H] is a great addition.

However, those popup style comments suck ass. I do not care nor want to see reader's opinions and dumb thoughts flying in. I think if there are popup windows at all, they should be restricted to informational in nature. Use them to offset the "off the cuff" freestyle speaking you are currently or to add any thought you forgot to mention during filming.

Example: when you release the clip on the SATA a popup window can say "Hint: use hemostats to release these in hard to reach areas"

Kyle, dude, I love the "umms" and "ahhs"! You're just using pure personality, a script could kill that. Its obvious you know your shit, and when you speak (without a script) it shows. Keep it that way bro.

Totally agree.

Kyle, you have a magnificent voice. Even the normal 'um' and 'ahhs' are totally exonerated from it.

To be honest, I loved your video not only because it was well made but because you are not the epitome of the typical computer nerd. Around my campus, there are many white/puny/funny voiced to come by. After seeing your video, it made me feel a lot better that not everyone is like this in the real world. :D

This is pretty cool.
We should get some civil action going to try to make this a new standard for SATA cables.

Hey, as long as Kyle doesn't pronounce "Celeron" like "Sell you're on," he can pronounce "SATA" any way he wants. I had a teacher who said it that way, drove me insane.

Here is how it is for me:

SAS = Sass
SCSI = Scuzzy
SATA = Saytuh
IDE = Eye-Dee-Eee
PCI-E x16 = Pee-Cee-Eye-Eee Ecks-Sixteen / Pee-Cee-Eye Express Ecks-Sixteen / sometimes just Ecks-Sixteen Slot.

PCI-E should NEVER be called "Pee-Cee-Eye Ecks". Since there are still PCI-X slots/boards floating around (if you work with servers/workstations that is).

Girl from Ipanema elevator music... GO!

It will be stuck in everyone's heads for the rest of the day, and everyone will think "Damn You Kyle Bennett!!!!". I mean how would that not be great?

Argh. Thanks! Now it's background music in my head.

Agreed, hence the reason I shudder whenever I see someone type PCI-Ex. I always emphasize the Eee or Express.

I would almost kill for latching HDMI cables. No joke. I have a heavy gauge cable that runs 40 feet from my computer to my HDTV, and it is a serious pain in the butt to have to brace it and tape it down to hold it in place without damaging my ports or falling out. Does such a thing even exist though?

Actually: http://www.bestdealcables.com/c-31-hdmi-cables.aspx

They make excellent cables at competitive prices to other self-proclaimed "high-quality" HDMI cables, and their HDMI cables use some nice wiring inside that complements the price; good luck finding a description of the wiring in any other HDMI cable. I would say it's on-par with the Chroma HDMI cables from WireWorldCable.

I have had a few latching SATA cables now for about 2 years. I found them in a CompUSA and took every one that they had at the time (which was only 3), plus they are 18" long. This is nothing new.

Nah, it is pronounced "celery" or simply "selly". Remember [H] cooling conditions at the time: the whopper celery sammich (I think it about the same time the blowhole first made it appearance).

Everything at monoprice is reasonably priced (understatement), they're great.

Thanks for the tip on these cables.

Yes, they do exist, but they have not been released yet.

In other news, SATA Locking cables have been around for years.. why is this suddenly front page news? Every hard drive out there supports it, but unfortunately, not every motherboard or RAID card has the side clips for the latch. If it was required that manufacturers were to include those, then sure, it would be news.

These have been around for years.. I'm not sure why this is a news item.

The sheer number of people who have commented in this thread (which you failed to read) saying that it was a "good find" and "wow, I didn't know they had those" is reason enough. Some people haven't seen them before.

Failboat.

Not really 'hot news', is it? Latching connectors were part of the SATA-II specs, it's just not many OEM's provide them as SATA-I spec'ed cables work the same for less cash....

Don't think we called it "hot news." I had no idea that this was part of the spec though. Thanks for the heads up.

Dude, where have you been? I have been using these on integrations of white-box & server PCs for over 4 years now at my company. Good effort on the video though... good for those who didn't know! -peez-

Kyle, really like these video how-tos, one of the things I miss most from DIYStreet.com (Go Angrygames!) Maybe the [H] could start a video how-to section? Just a thought.

It's only a matter of time :p
