Remember that story we posted back in April about your laptop being subject to search at the border? Well there are politicians trying to create a set of guidelines that will protect your electronic data against searches by the Department of Homeland Security.

Currently federal border agents may conduct border searches and seize travelers' personal laptops and other electronic storage devices without evidence or suspicion of wrongdoing. This bill would strengthen protections for U.S. citizens and their property by establishing specific guidelines concerning the retention, storage, copying and sharing of personally identifiable information that may be contained in seized electronic devices.

how bout that...guess the dhs hasn't gotten to them yet...either that or they had their crap seized... still this wouldn't be needed if they would drop this garbage to begin with...

Thank god, this was getting annoying and very dangerous for security. Airport workers are bottom of the barrel for education and would've most likely lost the laptop info.

We already have that... It's called the bill of rights.

Totally. They don't need a new law, they need to follow/enforce the laws we do have. Hello, 4th Ammendment - protection from unreasonable search and seizure.

Friggin' government refuses to follow its own rules.

Politicians fighting to protect their child porn when they come back from there vacations in Thailand, nothing more.

Looks like they finally read this:

Amendment 4 - Search and Seizure. Ratified 12/15/1791.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

No one bothers to read the articles any more, do they? This bill fails to address the key issue most have: The unlawful seizures committed against US citizens. All this pretty piece of legislation does is make them promise to be extra careful with shit that they should have no right to be in possession of to begin with.

Heres a copy of the bill for those interested:

But what about the terrorist? I think we should hand over all of our rights to keep us safe from al-CIAda.

Thanks for the link Global. So basically all this bill is doing is recommending some laws on how they do the searches and what to do with the info, how long to keep it and then report no later than 180 days regarding the amount of searches and a description of the searches. So in other words keep on taking peoples electronic devises and follow these guide lines. So I guess the title of this thread is a bit misleading as this particular politician is NOT fighting laptop searches at the border.

Did a search on Loretta Sanchez. One of the first things that popped up was this immigration report. Not looking too good for Loretta.

I'd like my second amendment on planes.

/agree

but wishful thinking. They already treat you like a criminal at airports... guilty until proven innocent and all that.

besides give it a few years, the way things are going we will be lucky to get our 2nd amendment at home.
