Tribes scared me

Does anyone know if Tribes or Tribes 2 servers are still populated? I've been meaning to reinstall both games but I fear most of the players have moved on to other games.

Which servers do you folks (used to) play on? Perhaps when I reinstall I'll drop by and see how everything is.

I start up tribes about once a year to see whats going on. I dont play just look at the server list to see who is still around. Last time i checked there were about 200 people playing on various servers.

I would like to challenge anyone to find a more close approximation to Tribes "JetPack+Skiing" than ET:QW w/ the Strogg Icarus.

Yesterday I jumped off a hill, gained speed as I traveled toward the ground, hit the gas before impacting a slope and I flew to the other side of the board in seconds.

I LOVE it ... just needs to be a little stronger --- needs a V8 engine or something.

I love ET:QW for that reason... my E4300 at 3.2 and 7900GT play it just fine.

Count me in the tribes is the best game of all time crowd. Simply nothing like it or as fun for multiplayer has come along since.

New tribes neednt have crysis graphics, but it couldn't hurt...

just Skiing with the exact same mechanics as SS tribes had.... the VOICES. THE VOICEACTORS seriously made that freakin game one of the most hilarious games of all time.

We're being a fire on my SHAAAZBBOT!

That's all I'm asking for... oh yeah and mid air disc mines from long range on a fly by are a great option to let the n00bs know how badly they suck.

:D

There is "supposedly" a new Tribes game in the works. Has anyone heard anything about it?

Agreed, Tribes 1, 2, and Vengence, best games ever and have left a void in my life. I keep hoping something will come out to replace it but nothing yet!

Don't taint the list with Vengence! ugh what a piece of crap that was.

Vengeance was awesome. By far my favorite of the Tribes games. I agree that it was a lot different than the other ones, but I just had so much fun playing it. Anyone still around that plays it because I would host a server.

Tribes 2 vet here, never played the original but I was on T2 from day one. It's been the only FPS that I've spent nearly 9-10hrs playing in one day (2 breaks), sooo much fun it's crazy. I loved to do a little bit of flag camping, but my specialty was sniping. Yes I was cheap at times and sniped the teleport pad so sue me :p. Other than that, I'd get a deployable station and snipe from the boonies.

I was on a 56k modem, many people were on cable then. I was still always in the top 25% with my 300 ping. Other than sniping, I play defense/engi/turrets. I only played Rengades/Ninja MOD from the boys over at renwerx. Speaking of them, they're using the old T2 engine as a basis and making there own "sequel" of sorts to T2. Graphically it'll be a little more polished, but not hugely. It's called Acension, but from the videos I've seen it won't be ready until sometime in the later half of 2008. Last time I checked on it was earlier this year. Can't wait till it comes out, looks very promising.

I use to love to play Tribes 2, the mix of large battlefield, useful vehicles that weren't too strong and the ability to pick up speed quickly by skiing and jetpack made it a blast. I use to love to get up behind you snipers or heavies that weren't paying attention and zap them in the back. I have played a lot of BF 2142 recently, and its no where near as fun as T2 (Who really wants to crouch anyway?).

I had heard on one of the other boards that the T2 master server had been shut down and I shed a tear. I am not sure if its true or not but as I was going through a rough time in my life, taking it out on you bastards really helped me forget about it.

I know at one point some people were making a mod for starsiege but the project was cancelled. I don't know why more game companies haven't picked up skiiing or jetpacks? Its not like its rocket science!?!

Hearing about the master server shutdown (rumor?) also wonder how many other games we aren't going to be able to play online after they shut down the master servers so you can't even log in. There should be some sort of law that says if you shut down the users ability to use something they have paid for you have to release a patch removing the requirement to login some where, and this patch be held by a 3rd party (business software often follows this routine for source code, although I can't think of the name of it) once the product has reached its end of life. Can you imagine buying a car and having it check with Ford every time before you started it, then one day Ford just turns off the ability for you to start your car?!?, only in the software world!

I would be all over a remake of the original Tribes.

Keep everything the same, just add a new graphics engine. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I loved T2, I use to play the Bones mod all the time. It was an aerial dogfighting mod that turnt the shriek into alot of different fighter ships (gatling guns, photon cannons, rail guns ect lol), and the gun ships into mobile auto-turret platforms, I have never played a game that made you manage your weapons energy, shields and speed boost like this game did, it was amazingly fun lol.

I played a similar mod called TAC (Team Aerial Combat), basic premise was if you touch the ground you instantly exploded. Had some of the best teamwork and some great times with that mod.

I have to get in on this.
Starsiege Tribes.... Wow.... how long ago. It the only game that I liked so much and had so much fun that I played for almost 17 hours in one sitting. (9pm till 2pm the next day. Crashed hard afterwards.)

It was new years 2000, now that I remember. Was waiting for Y2k to hit Japan to see if anything happened. Then started playing Tribes. Oh man what funtimes. Nothing like it ever. I do like the new Quake Wars and have been playing alot, but the Icarus is only available for the Strogg and its not that vital to the overall gameplay. Its definitely not the same.

What is this Legions that you speak of, eh?
New game? Is it out? Got a demo??

What I really loved about Tribes was the amazing netcode, even 56k users could play smoothly without any problems unlike other multiplayer games on the market back then.

Well, to be fair, when 'Tribes' came out, almost no games even HAD a multiplayer mode of any kind. And it was the very first multiplayer-ONLY game released.

That's what I was going to say - if it's not a major component of the game, and only on one side anyway...?

As far as 'Planetside' goes...yeah, it's the closest "feel" to it I've seen, although it didn't quite hit ALL the right buttons. Certainly closest I've seen, though - if from $12 a month, they had knocked it down to $9 instead of UP to $15, I'd probably be playing it again.

lol we did the same thing. All of us techs sitting in one of our labs gaming waiting for the servers to die and getting paid to play tribes all night. fun fun

I was a huge fan of Tribes 1+2, Tribes two became more disappointing as time went by though, I was one of those weirdos for whom it worked fine out of the box, but with each patch it actually became more unstable, and the ongoing rebalancing sucked more and more fun out of it.

It was one of the first games I saw destroyed by the community, or rather by the developers listening to the 10 loudest assholes on the forums, altering the game to make them happy and in the process fucking it up for everyone else.

T:V I never got into, It felt more like a UT mod than a tribes game, it seemed like fun, but it was so buggy at the start that I could barely play it, and when they sort of fixed it, it was was too late, the community had got frustrated and moved on, then they ditched it, so I never really got a chance to try it out.

Funnily enough, as with others in the thread, Planetside scratched some of the itches left by the absence of good tribes action, and then that went downhill when they hired Dave Georgeson to take over as the creative boss, who proceeded to make exactly the same mistakes as he had when he was in charge of Tribes2 (adding/changing stuff that only a vocal minority actually wanted) and alienated most of the playerbase.

I don't think I've actually been as engaged in any other game since, I'm afraid that if I get too close, Dave will come and ruin it again.

I think one of the main things going against Tribes was how far ahead of it's time it was, it's popularity in a time when everyone was still on dial up and effectively multiplayer only games were basically unheard of speaks volumes for how awesome it was.

On the upside, players are much more used to large scale, more complicated online FPS games now, and it's only a matter of time before some nails a Tribes type game, even if it doesn't have the Tribes name.

Thinking back, I'm still amazed that no other game has managed to so perfectly balance the mix of air and ground combat as Tribes, and early Tribes 2 did. Obviously the Battlefield games have pretty evolved aerial combat, but the Air Part and Ground part feel almost like separate games at times, in Tribes they felt like complimentary parts of the same game. I guess the fact that anyone could go airborne at any time helped to mesh the two parts :p.

I miss tribes.

Tribes 1 was the best multiplayer fps game I've ever played, hands down. No other game as of yet has combined the freedom of movement, large maps, teamplay into a game.

T1 also had my favorite balanced fps weapon of all time - the spinfusor. I loved dueling with that thing.

Tribes 2 didn't do it for me, mostly because my computer couldn't keep up with the super intensive graphics (at the time for me). Tribes: Vengeance wasn't that bad, I don't know why it did so horribly in sales. In fact, I still have it installed on my computer - and firing it up triggers a lot of good memories of Tribes 1. The single-player was fun to me too...

Don't ever do what I did and reinstall Tribes 1... I did that a couple years back and the graphics really don't hold up :p

I loved Starsiege Tribes, even if at the time I had a crappy computer and a 56k connection. Heavy Skiing FTW.

I've got some links for a server that's up for Tribes 2.
It uses the Shifter mod.
Sadly I keep getting UE's and haven't actually been able to log on yet, think my system is too new or something. (AMD X2 6000+ and GF 8800 GTS)

Here's a "how to connect" guide:
http://tribes2.wikidot.com/instructions
and a related page to that:

Here's a Shifter guide:

*****************************************************************

Apparently the server IP changes occasionally and the direct connect link won't work then, they have a game launcher at the second link above to fix this issue (direct link: http://tribes2.wikidot.com/local--files/start/Setup.exe )

As far as I know all that is needed is more players ;)
They have a "game clock" on both of the above pages, main play time is 9pm on those clocks.

Starsiege Tribes was my favorite game of all time, i almost failed out of highschool cause of it.

So who wants to startup a server and play some Tribes? We can download the client for free at FilePlanet. Where do we get the server client from?

IIRC, if it's the actual full game, the server part should be included with it. Configured through the same GUI that you use to start the game. I can't speak to any mods or specific configurations though.

The game is pretty dead nowadays, just download the client and everyone will be on a server called "Shithole".

Long live ESDF! Anyone besides me still use this key combination for movement?

OMG !! I wish I could talk about Tribes and Tribes 2 but my eyes would well up and tears would squirt from my eyes like a water pistol:(... Nuff said

ALL HAIL FALLEN EMPIRE: LEGIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm building my first new pc in 5+ years just to play this one game. It looks like it's going to be endless hours of old school tribes awesomeness. It's not even out of beta yet and I'm voting for game of the decade!

F*ck that other shit. Let's go fly boys!

tribes is a classic, it was great fun, still would be if people stil played and what not, i always have a hard time finding a full map. tribes 2 sucked

only a couple problems with legions that i see

no deployables
no vehicles

those are big problems

The last great FPS ever was or ever will be IMO. They broke the mold with that game. The funniest thing about it is the gameplay was sooooo simple I cant understand why noone can get it right.

New Engine + Old Game Play = WIN

There was nothing better in that game then a 200yd MA (Mid-Air Frag) of the flag carrier right before he capped. Priceless...

Anyone else loved the 200mph Flag Hand-offs? Ya'll are making me want to find that directory hiddin on my backup of backup files.

I guess I am one of the few that never did like Tribes at all. I played it a few times at LAN, then picked up Tribes 2 when it came out and couldn't take it. I hated Battlefield and Battlefield 2142 though too.

Tribes (the original) was one of the best games I ever played. I remember going outside the map boundries, building a small base, camaflouging it with trees and walls then building some sort of missile battery. I sent guided missiles inside the enemies base and I could even manuever them within the corridors inside.

I played Tribes 1 a lot back in 1999/2000 but when Tribes 2 came out, I played that for hundreds and hundreds of hours easily...I loved that game, and it is still my favorite game of all time.

i never got the same vibe for tribes 2, somebody liked the esdf combo? i hated it, i had all the keys memorized, and for the second game almost everything was changed, K.I.S.S would have applied there i think , but the first one i liked a lot more, especially with the renegades mods. I could fly the jetbike pretty well, the ones with modded firepower were even better. i could run down flag carriers and strafe/ bomb bases without getting shot off too often. Miss that. Loved jumping into a base and dropping nades and disc or plasma blasts taking the flag and hauling butt. the skiing up hills was fun to.They should remake it, I like the 3rd one somewhat, but it sold bad, and lost all support for it. People should have been a little more patient, they released tribes1 and tribes2 for free so you could get ready for vengeance. I think the single player was why it did not do so well, they spent a ton of resources on that, and while some things like the grappling hook was a cool addition, you could barely defend your base when attacked, they just made the damage crazy with the heavys and that was it. used to play on 5 assed monkey servers for the first 2 games all the time. IF i ever can afford it im gonna make a server for all 3, and if i had the bandwidth. I will check legion out, not sure how many Tribes designers they have but heard its a few.

dude the motion action in legions is the bomb .. check it out for free
