8800GT HDMI TV audio problem

I have a media center connected to my Sony HDTV using a DVI to HDMI cable and a separate 3.5mm audio cable from my sound card. All was working well until I swapped out the 1900XTX I was using for a 8800GT. This change strangely caused the sound to stop working. I confirmed the sound output from the HTPC was working and also tried inputting sound into the TV from a separate source to no avail. So the problem seemed to lie with the TV. I tried unplugging the HDMI cable form the TV and the sound came back on. It seems to me for some reason the TV thinks the 8800GT is outputting audio and is hence muting the 3.5mm input. To make matters worse the TV doesn't have an option to force the use of the 3.5mm input so I'm stuck with blank HDMI audio coming from the 8800 GT.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and know of anyway of solving this?

Also is there anyway of getting the 8800GT to output sound via i.e. so I can hook it up to my sound card and get it to output proper sound if it insists on doing this?

SPDIF header on the motherboard into SPDIF header on the 8800GT (assuming both have the headers, not all do).

There is a new sound card or HDMI extension that should work from Auzentech.

As they arent likely to be cheap options, it might be time to invest a good sound setup for your PC instead.
(note: you only need an HDMI AV amp if you intend on using High Definition audio on Blu Ray or if you need to switch between HDMI sources)
I dont believe either product is on the market yet.
