I'm building a home server that will be a database and web server
for a business site and an online business (e-commerce) site.

I need recommendations for parts from the retail market.
I using parts from the retail market to cut costs since I don't want
to buy the more expensive server oriented parts.

I've selected AMD because I know their highend chipsets support
ECC memory.

Any suggestions?

Software wise, the server will be running either MS-SQL or MySQL,
IIS or Apache and Windows Server 2000 or 2003 as a Database and Web server.

Pre-thanks for the comments and help.

I've selected AMD because I know their highend chipsets support
ECC memory.

That's a horrible reason.

I would say run PostgreSQL if you have the chance but you don't even seem sure how this site is going to run because Apache is going to get you PHP and IIS is going to get you ASP.NET. Which is it? And how many hits do you expect to get?

I think I already implied I was going to use "either" ASP or PHP by stating
I'll be using MS-SQL or MySQL.

But basically, like anyone who is divided amongst PHP or ASP, it's all about
the cost.

I'm trying to get MS-SQL License off a friend of mine who supposedly has
one or two of MS-SQL 2000 lying around.
If that falls through, I will be running PHP instead (more cost effective).

I've studied ASP so I would like to stick with it, but it's all about the cost currently.

Scale wise, the server is going to be a DB server, mail server and a web server.

2 website: introduction site with product info, company info, etc;
and a e-commerce site, which I don't expect more than hundred or so hits a day.

For the DB, it will hold, for now, website data and transaction/work logs for 5~10 people.

Mail server will also be providing 5~10 people's emails.
