CSS/TF2 won't run at lower resolutions.

I just got my studio 17. It runs CSS/TF2 great, but for CSS I prefer a lower resolution (1440x900 or lower). The screens res is 1920x1200. Its capable of running the games at that res, but I prefer CS at lower.

When I switch it to a lower resolution the resolution being run remains the same and the game just becomes smaller, leaving a black border all the way around.

I know that the resolution should be switched to the lower one that the game runs at when the game loads, because all my desktops do that automatically.

How do I fix this?

In the video control panel, there should be an option for scaling..I think this is the problem you are referring to. Since I think you have ATI and I have Nvidia, I can't say exactly how to solve your problem.

Scaling options are "Preserve Aspect Ratio","Full Screen", and "Centered".

It is set on Full Screen(which I assume is correct) by default.

Both my other systems have ATI cards as well and don't have this problem despite me never touching any settings to fix it.

Hmm, I'd say "Preserve Aspect Ratio" should only run black bars if it wasn't 16:10. 1440x900 is 16:10, so there should be no bars if you had it set on "Preserve Aspect Ratio". Centered, however, is what would definitely leave a black border on all edges.

I just tried it....

It is not the scaling setting. I also have tried running it in XP SP2 mode.

This is very annoying.

Crosshairs are ridiculously huge in CSS at 1920x1200.

You can change the crosshair size by inputting the following in the console

cl_crosshairsize xxx

Where xxx is some number. The bigger the number, the smaller the crosshair. I use around 2500.

I know that...still impossible to get crosshiars small enough without them dissapearing

Your monitor can also have scaling settings, you should check that as well.

it is cl_crosshairscale

should try around 4000

cl_crosshairscale 4000

only CS:Source though.

I know how to change the crosshair size, that doesn't solve all the issues though and I actually prefer to run it at lower res.

Anyone with insight please help me out here. I can't find any other scaling options other than the ones in the catalyst control.
I've never had this problem on any computer before...

Bumping this...still have this problem.

Haven't wanted to play CSS in a while, but want to again.
This is really annoying.

Changing the crosshair scale at 1920x1200 no matter how small the crosshair is not as thick as it is at lower resolutions.

Plus the fact I like really high FPS(it maintains 30+ at 1920x1200...but I want more).

open steam then go to games tab. Right click on counter strike source and go to properties. Click Set launch options and put the following in.
-w 800 -h 600

You can put whatever you want in there. It will force the game to run at that resolution. Optimum FPS for CSS is at least 100. When you run lower it doesnt send as much data out.

I can change the resolution. It just doesn't scale. My desktop doesn't even scale...If I change the setting in windows to 1440x900 it gives me black around the edges(aka the monitor still runs at 1920x1200...)

it's probably your monitor doing that. It is still at 1920x1200 and just putting the lower res into it.

see if there is an auto adjust button on the screen, if there is, press it after you change to a lower resolution.
