Dell 2408WFP Now Available

Input lag may not heavily affect your Xbox 360 gaming experience that much, as 1) you will be using it over HDMI (which has been shown to have less input lag with YPrPb/component color) and 2) You generally don't use mice or computer input devices on the 360.

That being said with a computer you may notice your screen pointer may not be as responsive to your hand movements as you'd like, or there may be a somewhat visible delay.

NOW, if the A01 /320-6277 part number is faster by a couple of frames of input lag, you may notice nothing or very little.

Input lag is not subjective, but the observation that there is input lag is subjective. One may feel that there is none, but another will find it agonizing. I for one would not like the amount of initial input lag because I've experienced similar input lag on a TV and did not like the laggy mouse pointer, but as always, opinions vary.

We are all hoping we can get some real input lag numbers on the new revision/part number, and it will be lower by a noticeable amount. I list two frames as my reference point, because I can feel two frames lag average or higher, but again, everyone is difference.

Another issue, as mentioned by Rolo above, is the sharpness setting that is not "quite right" where text either is too sharp and has a visible edge, or too soft/blurry.

A third issue mentioned is that the left side can be brighter than the right, BUT I'm not sure if this is more than the average PVA monitor, or if it's even worse than PVA panels I've seen otherwise utilized.

what i am saying is how will it affect me i guess. i know about the input lag.

thanks for your help, since there seems to be issues with the dell. does anyone have a suggestion for a 24 inch or 26 inch VA panel with at least 1 HDMI and 1 DVI connection for under 700 dollars?

Thanks for that, but point 2 confuses me. My understanding was that input lag applied to video signal input, not input devices like mice and keyboards. So a 360 connected to DVI would get the same kind of input lag you'd find with a computer connected via DVI. I understand the point that the HDMI connector supposedly has less input lag than the DVI connectors.

If it's the case that input lag only applies to mouse and keyboard input on the screen, then someone only playing games on their 360 would have nothing to worry about, and I'd put in an order now.

Again, has any one tested input lag on the A01 revision to say for sure? Looking through this thread for any updates: http://www.dellcommunity.com/suppor...hread.id=90203&view=by_date_ascending&page=87

how bout ps3 and bluray?

Are you asking me? I am sorry Sony can kiss my A**. I will never buy another Sony product again in my life. Heck the only reason they won the High Def. disc war was because they had deeper pockets and paid people off. HD-DVD was a better product.

I mean the quality of this monitor to run PS3 games and bluray... coz i got stuck right now... whether buy 2408wfp, benq f241vw, samsung 245t, or tn panels like g2400wd/v2400w ... or if u have better opinion...

ok sorry about that, lol, i just really hate sony. but the results would be the same results as with a xbox360 most likely. i actually ended buying the crappy dell 2409 for now it is actually going to be my moms monitor when i decide what to buy for myself.

Considering that many have complained about strong horizontal gamma shift issues with the Dell's S-PVA, I would probably prefer the HP.

If there are no major issues with the HP it looks like a spectacular monitor if within $100.00 of the Dell.

My only concern with the HP is that it is likely based on a new LG panel so there may be some teething concerns, as I don't know of them using a 24" wide gamut panel in the past, but if it has similar characteristics as the NEC (low anti-glare grain, smooth and sharp text) I think it will be a better all around display.

I'm holding my breath. I will watch distribution channels for this screen and if I can get it fast I will 100% try to and post up a review as soon as possible. I would throw panel caution to the wind.

Note: Sorry for temporarily hijacking.

if this is indeed true, how would you now stack it up against the HP LP2475w?

Just bought a 2408WFP with revision A01 firmware, and after hooking it up I noticed that there's a slight blue/gray "gradient" that runs from the left side of the screen to the right, progressively getting darker. For example, if I view a purely white screen (ie. maximized Notepad), the first 3" of the left side has whites that are well-defined, however the whites on the far right of the screen have more of a blue hue.

I stepped up to this monitor from their lower-end E248WFP, and I didn't notice this effect on the cheaper panel. Is this considered a common issue with the 2408's or does it sound like I have a defective panel? For $600 I don't think I can live with it if that's just the nature of this monitor!

EDIT: Went back and read some posts and noticed I'm not the only one with this problem (left side is brighter than the right side). Does anyone have a 2408WFP that DOESN'T have this issue, or is there a way to alleviate it using the monitor adjustments?

I have the A00 revision of the monitor and it does not have the issue you describe, JAdamz (or any of the other similar tinting issues).

Any updates with the A01 revision? I can't seem to find a review of it anywhere, and I'm really interested to see if there were major improvements....

I only received the A01, I never had the A00, so I am not necessarily comparing this to the previous version, since I didn't have any first hand experience with that... I can only comment on this new version and how it made my life "interesting"

Apparently there were "improvements", and I did get a monitor with the newest revision...

I used it for two days (first day I knew I didn't want the monitor).

The left side of my monitor is noticeably brighter and more colour accurate than my right side... To the point that any solid colour looks like it's a smooth gradient as opposed to one solid colour. I'm not a fanatic of absolute perfect colour reproduction, but I would expect one colour to be uniform across the screen when viewed from directly in front of the monitor.

Add onto that... input lag... apparently it's not suppose to be noticeable with this new revision... It is. I guess it will depend on what you play or use it for, but I could tell quite easily. I don't play a lot of games, so I didn't think this was going to be an issue, but I don't think I would've enjoyed any game with this monitor. I did try the dvi->hdmi trick and it made it worse for me. Perhaps I had a whacky monitor

Sorry for the scathing report, but seriously, there are so many random problems occuring with all the revisions and models that are being spun out. Some people are lucky and receiving solid monitors, but it really does feel like a lottery... many complaints have been listed/issued on dellcommunity forums.

Also, Europe appears to be getting the new revision at a very slow pace.

If you really want this monitor, I would wait it out to let them get some consistency and accuracy in what they're producing.

I'm personally now leaning toward the BenQ FP241VW. Done with Dell after this experience

I was just wondering if the new revision deals with the other problems apart from input lag...
and this is just sad :(

Luckily I found something very interesting: Lenovo ThinkVision L220x
It only has DVI-D, D-Sub and a USB hub but 1920x1200 on a 22" display = low dot pitch

For me, a good image quality means the absence of rough edges, and a small dot pitch is the best solution. For games, a monitor with a very small dot pitch would make Anti Aliasing unnecessary

That's the same issue I'm having (see a couple posts up). Unfortunately it sounds like this is a known issue with these monitors, which for $600+ is not acceptable in my opinion.I haven't actually used it with games yet so I'm not really sure if I'll notice the input lag.

I'm going to exchange it for another through Dell to see if I can get one without uneven brightness, but I'm not keeping my hopes up

Good luck with your exchange... I don't want to get into an endless loop of replacements for a relatively expensive monitor

Difference on average: 0.045 seconds or 45 milliseconds.
Revision A01.

My test did not involve me switching ports since my CRT is only VGA and I don't have one of those adaptors to test out what happens when I switch the ports (I have VGA port and DVI on my videocard, 6800 GT). In addition, I reset the Dell to factory default settings and attempted to use the native resolution of the CRT and separately tried the native resolution of the Dell (No difference).

I had noticed the lag while playing games, but I just checked using this to confirm it was not my mind messing with me, and it appears the input lag I was feeling is really there.

I have pictures of this, but I only copied the milliseconds if the seconds were the same, I also added a 1... to the CRT if it was ahead by a second on the image... Pretty straightforward. Made it easier for excel to do the differencing and averages without me spending a great deal of time on this

and what's the avg if you take out the last row? 0.453 1.000 0.547

it looks like it's a very large deviation and is skewing your avg.

Oh crap... I must've mistyped that... hmm, i'll check

Fixed, big difference, but still too high for me (i notice it)

So I caught up on all JimmyP's posts on the Dell forums, but I'm still not clear on the process

Friend got the monitor on that really cheap day in Canada, so it's been more than 30 days of having it.

What exactly does she have to say to get it exchanged? Don't mention new revision of firmware, just speak about problems that the older firmware/revision had?

How is the exchange arranged? When I did one with a 3007, they sent me the new one before picking up the old, so there was no down time. Is that standard?

I also heard there is a chance that a replacement could be a refurb. Why would there already be refurbs for this monitor, and is that even true? What's a downside to a refurb vs the old firmware? Cosmetic damage?

How long is the warranty, pretty sure 3 years yes?
Before 24 days, you get a brand new monitor as replacement, after 24 days it's a refurbished one.

I believe for all the exchanges/replacements... they give you labels to put on your old monitor box, and you give that box to purolator when they come to drop off your new monitor

You can explain the problems, but I believe they're pretty obvious and well understood by the customer support. I didn't have to explain much about the issues, they were ready to replace it right away. My issues particularly revolve around a very noticeable difference between the left side and right side of the monitor, but I'm sure she could get away with complaining about how everything feels delayed or slow

A refurbished monitor is probably an A00 (there are two versions of the monitor already) revision that has been upgraded to the new firmware, so that's what you'd be getting...

New firmware dealt with high input lag for one thing, there were other things, but that's what stood out for me as the changes.

This firmware update features greater control over sharpness settings, improved power save recovery, and less input lag.

I have dual 2405's and was thinking its almost time for an upgrade. Basically the 2408 seems to suck so what do guys suggest

is it for sure that replacements under warranty are refurbs? or just likely? and what would be the problem with a refurb anyways?

I am pretty sure after 24 days you get a refurbished monitor... you should read the warranty and return policies on dell. I'm basing my information on dell.ca (I'm from Canada, and I believe you are too)

A refurbished model most likely came back because it was the A00 version (first version), and there were some issues with this firmware, so Dell has upgraded it to the A01 version of the monitor (second version), newer firmware... and then sent it out into the system again

I cannot for the life of me find the link to that specific policy on dell.ca... I normally use google to find the Dell policies, but freaking confusing

I ended up getting a Dell 2408WFP (A01 rev.), and it looks great. Evenly lit, colors are good (a bit strong on the reds, but if you don't edit photos for a living, you're not going to care), well built, etc etc.

Purchased through Dell's website for $689, plus another $60 for a 5 year warranty, and they had a $70 off instant rebate promotion the day I got it, so not too bad.

Just wanted to add some input from someone who had a good experience with the monitor.

My replacement (exchange) monitor arrived today, refurbished unit since I'm outside of the "new" exchange window. It's the A01 firmware, and does not have as bad of uneven brightness as my previous one where the leftmost 1/4 was brighter than the rightmost 3/4. However the center is still a little dark and gives a blue-ish hue to white backgrounds, so I'm going to see if I can exchange it one more time and see if I can get something more improved.

I ended up getting a Dell 2408WFP (A01 rev.), and it looks great.
Congrats on getting a flawless monitor :) So you have no similar brightness issues as I described above towards the center of the screen when viewing a completely white screen (ie. Notepad in a maximized window)? Also, what's the build month of yours (located on back of monitor)?

In this case, is it worthwhile to buy a refurbished 2408WFP from dell?

Love my old 2407wfp (nonHC)... it's been the perfect monitor for like 2 years now. I think it's really funny how companies like Dell somehow manage to take 1 step forward and 2 steps back with each product they make. The 2407wfp was a completely awesome monitor, the HC introduced a bunch of BS, and now the 2408 model is well, inferior.

Guys, just buy a new 2407wfp off ebay or wherever.

Hey, I know this is a bit older, but I thought I'd add some info that I discovered last night.

If you use the ATI HDMI to DVI dongle that ships with the vid card, it will output YPrPb. If you use an HDMI to DVI cable it will output RGB.

When I've used that ATI dongle, I noticed smearing of red on white text and some blue/red chroma noise around non-clear typed text. With an HDMI to DVI cable, this disappears, but I get the ATI CCC warning "An HDMI to DVI cable has been detected, etc...." once and it goes away after I disable it.

So last night I picked up a cheap nVidia 9600GT (Palit) card with true HDMI connector on it, and hooked it up to my TV, and noticed no chroma noise on text. Went into nVidia control panel and changed it from RGB output to YPrPb and the smeared red text and chroma noise reappeared.

So this tells me that with the ATI adapter the output is YPrPb and with a regular HDMI to DVI cable it is RGB, which might explain your experiences Mike about lower lag with ATI's adapter vs. an HDMI to DVI cable.

FYI YMMV etc... ad nauseum :)

not completely sure, but HDMI on the 2408 may be forcing "digital YCbCr" (not analog YPbPr), compared to using plain old "digital RGB". the HDMI works (fo me), but the key may be processing efficiency within the (presumably) Genesis controller on the 2408, with YCbCr. no one really knows for sure. perhaps YCbCr can be done on DVI with nVidia. this thread may interest you. some report seeing this option for particular HDMI-equiped cards.

I've always wanted the Dell 240X monitor, I think since back when it was 2405 and made the purchase on Sep 8th at dell.ca for $541.27 including taxes.
But then I saw this thread and you guys scared me so I called up Dell and asked them to cancel the order and I just noticed that they canceled it.

I still think it’s an awesome monitor and hope they fix the issues but I'm not risking $600 for one that has issues.

Thanks all for your input.

I was thinking of getting this monitor from dell outlet(refurbished) but wanted to get your guys input. I am mainly going to use this for photo editing. At the moment I am lost at what to get but I do have a budget of $500. The refurb'd 2408wfp comes out to a total of $530. Should I risk it?

Previously I bought a refurb soyo 24" mva panel and it was nice, but would randomly shut off. I returned it and have been using my benq 19" tn panel just to get me by.

Any advice would be greatful

I went ahead and bought one of the 2408wfp's from dell, refurbished. It came surprisingly fast. I got it hooked up and noticed that the blues are a bit strong and there is a color shift from left to right. I only used it one day, but going to look at it closer today after work.

I needed this monitor for photo editing so accurate colors are the most important. Still waiting for my monitor calibrator to come in though.

Has anyone received a 2408wfp recently without this uneven color gradient??

what revision did you get from their refurb monitor?

Just phoned in for exchange #2. I guess I'll just have to keep exchanging them until I get one I like :D Maybe the third monitor's a charm...

The first exchange I did they sent me a refurb A01. I believe they do exchanges based on model number, so I guess in theory any time I exchange it I should always be receiving A01.
