WD 10EACS 1TB $139.99 free shipping @ newegg

What's with the "5400-7200" in the description? Does it change? All the other companies just have the standard "7200" in their descriptions.

game14 nice!

I thought this was a good deal @ $149 a few days ago, $139 is insane ..... I remember paying quite a bit more for my 320GB drive 2 yrs ago :p

I just mailed the egg to ask for $10 credit, it better go thru... it's been only 2 or 3 days!
These things are dropping like lead flys, oh so sweet:)

Supposedly ramps up to 7200rpm as needed, but various reviews I've read seem to think that it never actually does, so this drive is slow compared to other TB drives. So not a bad price if you just need the space, but if you want decent speed too you might want to look elsewhere.

It doesn't, it is a fixed speed somewhere in between 5400 and 7200

Warm at best, I'd rather pay another $20 for the Seagate 1TB drive and get a faster drive with a 5 year warranty.

no it doesnt. It runs at a fixed speed , mostly 5400rpm.Like WD sais "a balance between speed ,performance and powersaving".These drives r slower than other 1TB drives outthere but they run very cool and save power.Fine for storage or HTPC when performance is not needed.

Ah, my mistake then. Probably should just call it a 5400rpm drive then, since probably none of these drives actually run at 7200rpm.

lol 1 TB harddrives weren't made for speed - the fact that they are fast as a side effect of their intense storage density is nice, but they are for mass storage pure & simple.
Speed go shop a Raptor or SSD, these things are like candy @ these prices :D

GP in model name significes their "Green Power" drives, lower power draw, and hence lower performance. They are great for general mass storage. eg. would be great for an media pc for storing lots of media.

Some of us like to have our candy and eat it too :) Raptors emphasize speed and sacrifice space and price, while WD GP drives emphasize space and power savings and sacrifice speed. All else being equal at the same price I'd rather get a faster drive than save a few watts of electricity, so I'd personally go with the Seagate at the same price as the WD GP, but that's just me. I don't have an HTPC or similar performance-doesn't-matter box.

5400 is totally unacceptable with the Seagate running at 7200, has a 5yr instead of a 3yr, and is cheaper than the posted deal at ZZF. Sorry to those of you that got the WD, which is usually my first choice, but this is just a crap deal with seagate trumping them in every category.

Thanks everybody for pointing all that out. :)

Just because you (and I for that matter) are not in its target demographic doesn't make it a bad drive. It's perfect for people for whom silence trumps performance. Silent PC Review gives it its highest accolades:

It's the quietest desktop drive we've ever tested. It's the most efficient drive we've ever tested. And it comes in capacities up to 1 TB. What more do you want? As far as SPCR is concerned, this could be the perfect drive — at least until flash media takes over.

(From http://www.silentpcreview.com/article786-page4.html) Even for us [H] folk, it could be great in a HTPC. 3 vs 5 year warranty also doesn't matter to some of us; are you really going to be using a lousy terabyte drive 5 years from now anyway? ;)

wd 640 gb drive is one of the best imo. Speed and reliability wise

QFT. If you don't need TB capacity in a single drive right now (and don't want to pay the obnoxious Raptor or SSD premium), the 640GB drive is the sweet spot right now. It's my OS drive.

I run three of these drives in my file server. Just made sure to download WDTLER and turn TLER on so they can be put in a RAID array.

I'm looking at adding 2 more drives in the next 6 months. Less heat and electricity usage is nice.

Yep, got my HW coming tomorrow with that obnoxious VelociRaptor and 2 640GB WD 6400AAKS. I went this way because of the reliability factor. I also don't prefer the shipping proceedures of Newegg on HDDs (too many fail on me from there) so I get the coffin style shipping from ZZF.

My WD 6400AAKS was ordered double-boxed from Directron to be safe. ;) Though I've heard that NewEgg is shipping them better these days than they used to, I still wouldn't risk it myself when there are other options like Directron and ZZF for around the same price.
