I'm going to be totally honest that as a person of mixed background, black included, I say this is the most dumbest fucking idea ever.
We live in a day and age where "black" music is more prevalent than ever. I'm not talking about rap. I'm talking about rap, hip hop, pop, and now even the various forms of rock and metal and of course jazz and the blues. You can seriously find more performers/people in music videos that are black on MTV than you will on BET now, to put things into perspective. (And BET and how its changed since inception is its own can of worms, so we won't go there)
The way I see it, if you can't find anything black related on Google or MSN or even Yahoo today, its not because there's not enough relavent search results being on the first page - you're just too fucking stupid to use the internet.

If you replace the word 'Black' with something that isn't related to skin color, this actually isn't a bad idea.
For example, searching for 'new worm' will probably turn up a bunch of site about actual worms, with the word 'new' used out of context. However, if there was a search engine targeting security, it would turn up articles on what the new worm does and how to protect against it.

Ok I didn't read the article but I know what this is about because I heard it on NPR or the BBC about a month ago. I have read everyone's post and do agree with the general consensus that this is freaking dumb but I have a couple of points to make real quick.
1. To the quote above, I think the guy you were replying to was trying to say that black people have things going on in their lives and in their cultural history that "white people" can't understand, and never will. What I mean by this is we have had to deal with slavery, and jim crow for 400 years. Just as other minorities in this country they all have things that have happened to them that the ordinary born in America White person can't understand. To give you a quick example, I know people who can trace their lineage back to Europe and will say things like my great great great grand father was an officer in the Civil War. Being a black male I don't have this luxury. I can only trace my rots back to my great great grand parents if I try really hard. It is a burden that white people in general don't understand or even have to think about.
2. The guy who is creating this search engine had another venture years ago called Black Planet. It pre dated My Space by several years and had all the same aspects of My Space before My Space. My first foray onto the Internet was hanging out on this site in 1997 and 1998.
3. The fact of the matter is black entrepreneurs try and get blacks support by saying black owned and then turn around and sell it to a "white company" as soon as the price is right for them. I have no problem with making money but quite trying to claim that it is helping our community because it doesn't. BET was a classic example of how to sell out when the creator of the network sold it to VIACOM for over a billion dollars and you can see how horrible that station is. I refuse to let my son watch that crap! I blame them for being a huge contributor to the downfall of any meaning full real hip hop.

I don't really see your beef with BET (the old version before being sold), and black colleges. I don't think you are looking at the big picture of why they were created in the first place. Their wouldn't have been a need for a Moorehead college if blacks could have been admitted to all white Universities. I agree the idea is dumb as hell and is further diminishing our peoples perspective of our mental ability. But the whole reverse Affirmative action and if white people did this, argument i don't get. We wouldn't need these things if white people wouldn't have segregated us in the first place.

Ok first I am from a extremely segregated hard city, and have had to live with this shit my whole life. I agree with you that no man should get a job over another because of skin color, but I disagree with you that it was all bullshit. In todays society yes it should be like that but you aren't look back at when it was created 40 years ago. It was a different time, and the fact that it happed a long time ago so it should be forgotten is the biggest short sited disrespectful thing you could say to me and any other black. America has done some horrible shit, yet to make up for it they give monetary payback to other nationalites but not blacks. So first yea we got screwed but the long lasting affects are still here today. We didn't start of on the same foot. We had to start from 0 with learning how to fucking read and write first with out being killed. If that didn't work we had to teach our children that they need to get an education and sacrifice for them. So while white America were having their financial fortunes in the roaring 20's and the 50's blacks had back breaking poverty. So no if W.E.B. Dubois couldn't get a freaking job being an Harvard grad but a white man with lower education could, that shit isn't right. So please don't insult my intelligence!

An expected response from someone who thinks he's being accused of having a small dick or something. You're missing the point. It's nothing like that. It's not about if you physically are capable - it's about if you're a white guy, you'll have a fundamentally different life experience than a black guy. Period. And the only way you can experience the difference is if you're black, which you can't be unless you're Robert Downey Jr.

I'll admit the first hting I thought of was Whitney Houston, but the man said, Houston was 4th, and I know that if I was searching for an artist, other than Prince or Madonna, I'd probably type in a last name.
OTOH, the Museum is commonly called "The Whitney," and words like "the" are generally left off in web searches.
Nevertheless, there was a point brought up that I thought was useful: a search on diabetes brought up information that specifically pertains to blacks. That is useful.
I'm unconvinced that its' necessary, but there are all kinds of special interest search engines out there, and this is just another one.
I also think they need to work on the interface. Type in your search and hit enter and nothing happens. There's no excuse for that....even if their research shows that blacks always use the mouse to click on search (and I'm sure that's not the case).

heh, yeah, like in his book where he loves to praise the quote "white folks greed runs a world in need", or like when he called his grandmother a "typical white person", or when he tries to play the race card saying "he doesn't look like all the other presidents on the dollar bill", or when he says "they're going to try to make you afraid of me. He's young and inexperienced and he's got a funny name. And did I mention he's black", or when he uses quotes and philosophies of James Cone, or when he attends one of the most blatantly racist churches for 20 or so years and claims he's never heard anything hateful despite the hours upon hours of videos, pages of newsletters, round-the-world trips that his "spiritual adviser" and "mentor" made with Louis Farrakhan, or the million man march Obama coordinated and attended, etc. Yeah, Obama certainly has been a beacon for all of us to transcend racism, hasn't he...? Or at least he wants it to sound that way in his brilliantly thought out speeches. I can recall this happening other times throughout history. Some people never learn. Look at the history books, look at the man's record, look at the facts, look at the dozens of associations, look at his own words... and most of all, don't listen to the media. Good lord, there have already been millions of people with the wool pulled over their eyes.

New point: What about the idea that - regardless of whether a black Google is a racist site - a black Google WILL segregate blacks even more from mainstream heavily white America? That's not good. Blacks were enslaved, then lynched and terrorized, then segregated, and now we think it's a good idea to create yet ANOTHER barrier between us? Shared experience is what bonds people, communities, and sometimes entire races. A Black Google is a step backwards for a coherent mixed-color society.
Do you object to the Washington Times and Fox News?
There's a reason why some magazines and newspapers that target African Americans: because it serves a market that isn't served by whatever is out there.
Using your logic, we should do away with National Review, the Weekly Standard, National Heritage and Mother Jones. Every music magazine should cover Ragtime, Jazz, Rap, Classical, New Age, Rock and the Blues. None should cover any particular Genre.
There's a difference between discriminating based on race or religion and marketing certain products to certain demographics.

I don't understand how a black person today could say they know what it's like to be a slave, or deal with slavery. I doubt any living black person was around for that. I'm white, and haven't been able to trace my ancestry back to anything other than poor immigrants that had hard lives, some of them coming from Irish slums where they were treated like subhuman garbage.
Hell, I am one of the few white people I know of that wound up in black foster homes as a teenager, where I was sexually abused and emotionally tortured, at one point living with a family that told me I was going to "pay for slavery" by becoming their white slave, while they lived like the place was a garbage can and threatened my life if I didn't clean it up. I am surprised I survived and and remained even slightly sane.
So, really, in the modern age, white, black, yellow, red, purple or mauve-- whatever the color our skin is, doesn't really matter. Bad stuff can happen to anybody and is no longer limited to just a single race. Anybody can be the abused or the abuser, we really don't have the need to have seperate things like this.. In my opinion a search engine like this just illustrates the fact that it seems we are going backward-- where black people want to actually pull away and segragate, instead of being a part of the larger whole.. But even that is not unique, I feel the same way for the United States as a whole-- we don't want to become a part of a larger world... But that's a different discussion entirely.

That's exactly what he's doing. And it's sad. GOOG is #1 in search because the have the best solution currently on the market. Skewing results by some "blackness factor" does a disservice to black users, and that's assuming this new search is as good as the GOOG before the blacksploitation algorithm is applied.
You've got to be kidding me. Are you suggesting that if there was a search engine that always turned up exactly what you were searching for, but didn't turn it up for anyone else that would be bad?
Do you think all specialized search engines are separating us. Is Pricegrabber bad. It separates the people who are shopping from those looking for general information.
Isn't Hardocp bad? It separates techies from the average internet user. Hard OCP should have Articles on the latest CPUs and jimmy choo shoes. They should have articles on how to get goop off your Heat sink and how to get a red wine stain out of your dress. Plus they need to have daily recaps of Soap Operas as well as scores from around the world. In addition, they need to have stories that appeal to kids of all ages.
And what about those nasty car sites, that separate gear heads from the non-gearheads? Oprah's audience is dominated by women. Should she have to share her show with Howard Stern so that men and women watch together (or tune out completely)
All this site attempts is to return information that, according to the company's research, African Americans are generally looking for. The idea that somehow Google brings us closer together is laughable. It's a search engine. If you want to use this other search engine, nothing prevents you from using it. If you search on whitney, you'll still find the Whitney museum and the bank on the first page. Search on Isaac and you find Newton on there somewhere (not that Newton was #1 on Google either), but Hayes will come up first.
With all the narrowly cast websites on the web, I really don't understand why it's THIS ONE that's bad.
