Project: Galaxy 4.75

Sorry for crappy pix part 2. This is my new rack. These are the same racks I use at work so I am pretty familiar with them (also, it didn't hurt that one came availible on my deadline for finding a rack). This one is about a week old. I installed a Dell zero U kvm and two zero u rapid PDU's.

Now I just need power :)

Oh and you wont see galaxy 5.0 in there as I forgot my rack clips at work!! I wish supermicro will get with the program and offer rapid rails.

Note: A lot more components will still go in here and please don't count the U's as galaxy 4.75 is not properly mounted (using dell rapid rails on her temporarily so the U spacing isn't proper). And for those of you wondering, it's a Dell latest generation 4210 cabinet with front/rear doors and sides.

Anyways, here you go:

God, I love Dell servers and racks, they have a nice, but simple look!! Congrats on getting your gear in a nice home!

nice rack, i got the dell 24u at work. rapid rails are key =)

you got a KVM for those servers?

I have 3 KVM's laying around, I might just as well end up using them. Besides, I plan on mounting a lot more machines into this rack.. filling it up.

I used to think that KVMs in a rack were a waste (think RDC) but after my Areca raid card locked up the machine and I had to drag a monitor and keyboard to the machine, I decided to grab a rackmount console and kvm switch.....

well what are you going to do if you need to enter the bios lol?

Most of my servers run 24/7, very little need to enter the bios once the machine is in production....

wake up call, most servers do run 24/7. looks like you learned the hard way why a kvm is necessary ;)

if you guys need a kvm, i have a belkin 8 port with rack mount ears available just sitting around, will hook it up

Now I wonder if my HOA would approve of this (or the neighbors, lol)

I have been looking at a whole house generator since I moved in, I'm tired of the large power outages and also, I want to have that piece of mind. I'm looking at all sorts of full home units and the ones specifically for homes are a little weak and also very expensive with a crappy ATS.

I'm also looking for a whole home UPS solution too, but finding one for L1+L2+N is kinda hard (120/240), if you guys have any suggestions, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Ockie, have you had any issues with drive temps in the norco 4020?

I have one of those too and the drive temps stay lower than in my desktop those 5 fans behind the backplanes suck a lot of air through the front of the case.

I have one as well and the temps aren't bad. In a 75F room, they seem to hang around 86F with the top on. I was running it for a bit with the top off when I was building it, and the temps were about 10F higher since the fans weren't pulling air over the drives.

I'm running in the basement, where it's pretty cool no matter what configuration.

Update: I just wired up some L5-20 pigtails to my main power panel, the rack has power!

just got ya back sorry dood, busy week. its a 4 port too =(

<--- long week, mind isn't the best.

Sigh, I'm still having problems with the new 4.75. So finally the system drive came (big hassel, fedex claim they couldn't locate my house so shipping was delayed 2 days).... and now finally I pop the tb drive in... for some reason the motherboard wont post past when it's plugged in... go figure. Still waiting for my other system drive RMA.

I have a feeling its something to do with being a 1tb drive. So my options are quite limited now. I want to get this stupid box up, but this older supermicro board has been killing me in it's stupid limitations.

So with that said, expect a major configuration change coming shortly. I'm now just thinking about buying a desktop board and getting things done.

Update:

New Galaxy 4.75 lol

BONUS, Galaxy 4.75 x2 (Yes, I'm building two, think of this as a buy one get one free type thing).

sweet once again ockie,

looks like this drive pooling that WHS offers is ideal, I was trying to find a wiki on it, but not able to find a lot of info.

basicly I archive my movies and need to be able to expand regularly and easily, without shutting down the pc 200X better!

and that norco case seems ideal :D now i just need a cheaper setup then what you have, as I would only ever access one or two movies at a time. heavy speed is not a big deal.

You are insane Ockie!

So then what would that bring your total storage to with all the current Galaxies running together?

sad to see such failure on your side
hope new dual setup will work just fine ;)

Unfortunatley, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for, comes all to true for me. I cut costs by going with an older server motherboard combo, while it worked great, it lacked many features I desired or features I could have used as a workaround. The lack of 1tb support, the lack of pcie, the lack of abundance of expansion slots, limited sata ports, it all starts to add up. The 1tb not wanting to boot from the motherboard controller was the last straw for me (i have no slots left to put in another controller that will boot the 1tb drive).

I've done this setup before in galaxy 4.0 I believe, it worked great, so I'm going with new hardware that supports all the latest things. Even though I am stuck with one gig port, I still have a plethora of pcie and pci options to expand upon. Also, the cpu I ordered was 45w processors, so that shouldn't hurt either ;)

I do feel better when I spend less on these projects, especially when it works like a dream. I'm quite picky when it comes to that and I'm quite low on straws, so it doesn't take much for me to be unsatisfied and move to a new platform.

hehe
kinda funny
to have 45w cpu who usualy will drain ~25-30w ... when you have 20x400 ... :)

FYI - in my own Norco 4020 build, I lowered my drive temps by closing up the port holes underneath the 5 fans. Warm air is still pooling over the area above the CPU and I'm still trying to deal with that. Basically the two rear fans aren't able to exit the warm air fast enough.

Supermicro's wisdom of employing a fan shroud in their 2U and 4U cases is more obvious to me now.

Well one easy way is to replace your rear fans with sunace fans... or if you want, you could look at tornado's ;)
