I've read several places that these mostly don't exist, but I was curious: Why? Or do they exist, but are just rare?

I currently have a Dell 2007WFP S-IPS display at home, and I really like it. A friend has a 24" S-PVA display (I can't remember the brand name off the top of my head), and I can see the color shift pretty easily and it bugs me. Haven't used it long enough to see if it causes bad eye strain, but I can see it.

I want to step up to 24", because I'd like to go 1920x1200 with my new video card coming soon. I really would like to avoid VA displays, unless there are some high quality ones out there that don't display the color shift.

Do I have to step up to 26" to get an S-IPS display (which is cost prohibitive), or are there some good 24" S-IPS panels out there?

Shape of the sub pixels mainly. More or less H-IPS is just a new, more advanced generation of S-IPS. The advantages (good colour, wide viewing angle, etc) are the same. Basically if you like S-IPS, you should like H-IPS. I sure do.

By the time you hit $1000 for the NEC, what is the disadvantage if any of just getting an IPS based LCD TV, like the $900 32" Toshiba 32RV530? You have bigger pixels but is the image quality going to be compromised in any way?

I probably did. What's the difference between H-IPS and S-IPS?

IPS are expensive and most people, general users, do not want to pay the premium. Samsung and NEC marketing even persuaded some poeple, that PVA screens are as good as IPS, maybe even better. This way they can sell theis PVAs for the price if IPSs, while the manufacturing cost is 30 % lower.

That's because NEC PVAs are beautiful and come with the best software, menus, documentation, and packaging in the business...but once you spend some time with an IPS, its painfully clear that even the legendary NEC quality can't make up for the difference.

I wish they'd quit fvcking around with TNs and VAs and release the 24" and 26" successors to the 20WMGX2. Same for ViewSonic. Why is it that the two coolest monitor companies have lowered their standards and decided to focus on subpar panels to sell at BestBuy, while generic offbrands like Planar and Doublesight have resurrected the affordable consumer IPS?

Hazro HZ24Wi (normal gamut) = H-IPS

Hazro HZ26Wi (wide gamut) = H-IPS

HP LP2475w (wide gamut) = S-IPS

Why no mention of these 3 monitors ? The Hazro being sold in Europe seems to be very attractive for movie watching and games. The HP seems to be a very good alternative as it is being sold in more different countries compared to the Hazro. The specs and price for the HP seem very attractive and probably is one of the best S-IPS for performance/price category same like when Dell 2405 FPW first came out seem to be attractice because something that good at the time suddenly felt more affordable :D

NEC has 24", 26" and 30" H-IPS screens - 2490, 2690 and 3090.

Because they are pretty expensive, given the Euro - Dollar exchange rates. It'll be difficult to get one unless you live in the EU (the OP's profile says he lives in the states), and any RMA procedure will be a pain in the ass and costly.

Someone once explained to me in one of the old NEC 2490 or 2690 threads something along the lines of TV's at that level are made of lesser quality than PC monitors up at this level and then they went into a bunch of technical specifics and such.

I really wish I could remember it better than that, but I've personally found that $1000 can take you to the moon in PC LCD land but $1000 for a "TV" LCD is....hit and miss at best. The bigger pixels can really end up biting you in the ass on certain applications. From there, you get into how well is the motion blur and refresh rates handles and all the rest of that.

YMMV
