Why would I want a 9950be over a 9850be? $42, 15 watts and 100mz difference and for the life of me I do not see why I would want a 9950. At the first of the month I want to get a Phenom for my new Foxconn 790GX and try some overcloaking. Am I missing something in my comparision of the 2 Phenoms above? Sometimes the obvious escapes me, is it now?

At 125w compared to 140w would the 9850be be a better overclocking candidate?

Thanks!!

from what I've been reading the 9950 overclocks a tad higher, it's also a later stepping and batch and it really doesn't suck up less power. Correct me if I'm wrong it actually consumes a tad less. I don't know why it's marked with 140TDP.

Well if you have a 9850 id keep it. But if you havent purchased either then get the 9950. My understanding is it overclocks ok on the 790GX boards. But as with all AMD chips it is either hit or miss.

It is a 140 watt tdp I think. If i am not mistaken has bigger cache.

*EDIT* I was wrong.. they are the same cache size.

I'd go for the 9850BE simply because I don't think there will be any notable difference between speeds even overclocked. And finding a buyer for the 9850 will probably be easier if you want to resell it later on since very few mobos support 140w tdp cpus.

im currently using a 9850 and have it running at 2.94 Ghz. 14x210 at 1.4v

I would get a 9950 if I had neither and were choosing one. It seems that across the board they are better chips (perhaps cherry-picked) and either hit higher clocks or has similar clocks with less voltage.

The board won't matter much. With a Black Edition he'll most likely be overclocking via multiplier adjustments so the board is really not that big a deal. I can tell you from my experiences that overclocking the 9950BE via HTT speed adjustments is almost pointless. 40MHz is the best overclock I've seen thus far on one.

Was there any word on when the Phenoms would be manufactured on the 45 nm process? Would be interesting to see if those would then be OK for my 770-based board.

That's a pretty good overclock. The best overclock I've seen on a Phenom was about the same as yours but I could only get it that high on a triple core 8750. The best Phenom X4 overclock I've ever reached was only about 2.88GHz and that was on a 9950.

I had 2.8 @ 3.125 on my 9600 though it had a hard wall above that whatever the voltage. (also before vista 64 )I am more then a little curious to try the new SB750

i havent really tried to push it any further. I am going to wait till i have a better cooler before i attempt it.

I just pushed an x3 8450 from 2.1 to 2.5 by just pushing the bus up. Haven't had time to mess with it more, and it could be because I have the new SB750 with ACC. Oddly though, I don't know if ACC is enabled or not since AOD doesn't seem to recognize it. :p

Well a clock speed of 2.5GHz should mean that you only managed to get your bus up to 238MHz. That's certainly in line with what I've seen out of plenty of Phenom X3 and X4 processors. However that isn't record breaking. Phenom's suck at FSB/HTT bus overclocking.

I will say this; Many of the newer Phenom processors I've worked with are overclocking to their maximum potential with far less voltage increases than I had seen previously on B2 and early B3 silicon. Still I've yet to ever break 3.0GHz with any kind of stability on any Phenom X4 or X3 processor.

what should be the max allowable temperature for the Phenom 9850 under 100% load.

Haha yeah I was tired when I made that post, I was thinking Mhz not bus speed.:p Have you tried this on the new SB750 southbridge? We're waiting on you [H] guys to beat them up on the bench, come on!

You'll be seeing board coverage of an SB750 equipped board soon.

3.4 and 3.5 on the 9850BE, you guys give me hope.

What is a good air cooler for OCed Phenoms? I see XIGMATEK and Zalman in sigs, these do ok?

apparently under full load, 75c is way too hot. Kept shutting down my computer and wouldnt come on till it cooled off. 1.375v is too much.

What the hell, i go above that on default clocks and a good cooler. And i know its seated right and i have the right amount of paste. Something isn't right if the max says 61c

That does seem a bit low, I don't think any AMD processor I've owned has ever had a listed tolerance lower then 75c that I'm aware of.

I own a 9850 Black Edition and i personally say its fast. Yeah i mean its under 100mhz of the 9950 Black Edition but so what. I think its better because you have less wattage used and also the fact that it is a little cheaper. Of course you lose the benefit of it not overclocking as much but oh well. Also now that the 790gx motherobards are out AMD fixed some more of the overclocking and they are great boards. I have a 790gx motherboard because it, a 9850BE, and a Visiontek HD4870 at quakecon and have learned about it when AMD debued the 790gx mobo. If any AMD ppl are out there i would recommend the 790gx. Better for overclocking and u can get one for $150.

average idle temp is between 35-45c on almost any processor, load temps can be as little as 55c and upwards of 80c in some cases.

I dunno i think that it should be a little lower becuase with my cooler im sitting at 62 degrees celcius load and 43 idle. It could have to do with the cooling going on but dude good luck on keeping the beast cooled.

No I'm saying 75 has been the absolute time to die temperature on the processor, you of course never try to run it close to that. I guess per the above links though, 61 it is.

The Phenom can handle quite a bit of heat. I had one idling at 70c when I started overclocking earlier B3 silicon. This was on water cooling BTW. :eek:The CPU still works fine to this day.

well that makes me feel better after alt+tabbing during a game to see the cpu at like 65c
