How do I prove bandwidth use doesn't effect wifi sync rate?

My parents think my sister and I are hogging all of our 5.15mb/s bandwidth when I am certain its their laptops weak reception. I've proved it in the following ways.

-I tested the wifi sync rate on our newest laptop all around the house including where they put their work laptops and got the maximum 54mb/s. Their work laptops get 5-11mb/s.

-They complained about connection rate even when the two ethernet connected computers were off. They believed they could still allocate bandwidth  so I disconected the cat6 cables just to prove they weren't.

-I demonstrated that the water in their bodies blocks the signal by sitting between the computer and the router and showing how the sync rate halved.

-I showed them that games only use 40-50kb/s using Vista's bandwidth monitor.

How else can I prove that sync rate is their problem and that sync rate is not related to bandwidth use? Even if I am downloading (not uploading) at full speed the router will share bandwidth equally right? Are there any articles by an IT professional that prove my point?

One point; The downstream queue is ISP side. With you fully saturating the downstream, your parent's router may very well not get anywhere near "fair" bandwidth. It has to do more with the type of traffic, the various source's speed and the ISP's queue policy.

Hardwire their laptop into the network and see what kind of behavior you get. But honestly, it doesn't sound like your parents are too interested in hearing it.

So if I am downloading at 600kb/s and then someone else starts a download, won't the router make it so we both download at 300kb/s? I also want to know if bandwidth use on my computer would have any effect on wifi connection rate on other computers. Just to clarify, all computers are connected to the same DSL modem/router.

your hardwired connection will have absolutely ZERO effect on their wireless connection speed to the router. It may effect their download/upload speeds to the internets, but it has NOTHING to do with their connection to the router itself.

I guess you are failing to see the real issue, THEY are paying the bills for the internet, THEY get to dictate the rules, if you have an issue with that get your own place or your own internet service :D Pretty simple.

Psycho.. it's not even worth it. My parents do the same thing. So I just ignore them. If they try to disconnect my shit, I just put it all back. Although, I am 18 and don't have to put up with it.

Maybe, maybe not. All things being equal, yes, the router will split the download ( although given the way tcp works, it will take a while for that to actually stabilize ).

However, all things are usually not equal. Wireless does play into this and will handicap them somewhat. How much, I have no idea how to know, but not much.

Aside from that which has already been covered, no. Bandwidth use on your wired systems will not adversely affect bandwidth on the wireless computers.

move out and get FiOS, you wont look back :D

for :5bux: Verizon upgrade my 5 mbit / 2mbit connection to a full 10mbit/2mbit.

I get better downstream than i had at .edu, and no network admins closing my ports!

I'm moving out in less than 2 weeks. But i'm moving in with a friend, and his mom won't let me touch the internet. =\

Lol, you're moving out of your parents and into a friends parents? Pretty insulting to your parents, although I can't say I didn't do the exact same thing. ;)

have your friend install a wingate like software (we used wingate back in the days of win95) so you can use his computer to connect to the internet, you'll need a cross over cable if you wanna do a wired connection, or if he has a wifi card, you can use it as an AP.

Sorry it took so long to answer your question.

I looked in the cable box on the outside of the house, and the wiring is all wrong. The internet is on a 3rd splitter, which is way way off. I was going to rewire the whole house for freeee, but she won't let me. I was going to run cat6 and coax all over to every room. That is how she wouldn't let me touch the internet. But we've got 3 routers going anyways, so plenty of connections.
