Tyan Server Barebones $70-170, Opteron and Xeon, Hot?

Dang, wish I'd gotten in on that P4 server. :(
I have all the parts to flesh it out lying around here, and space in a datacenter to put it.

Thanks OP. My company picked up 10 of the Xeon boxes to replace some old Dell 1750's.

All four of the GX28's we ordered came in today. They are all new/unused. CD-ROM's were already installed in them. All the rack goodies are there, rabbit ears, rails, etc. Two ginormous copper heatsinks. Manual for the motherboard and another manual for the overall barebone, two floppies with SIL RAID drivers, driver CD. US and European power plugs, floppy cable also in box. (On the GX28, a slim floppy can go in the upper right area of the front)

Overall, very impressed. Was double boxed and all four boxes were in pristine condition, which honestly shocked me -- the delivery guys around here love to Ace Ventura boxes LOL. Heavy sum bitch too LOL. I got some Opty 265's and 275's coming in, a pile of PC3200 REG ECC and a pile of 320GB SATA-II drives. Upgrading two DNS servers, a internal file server and a web server with these. So far, quite happy. Glad I jumped on them while the getting was good.

im so tempted to get one of these and colocate it..

edit: ah i see why they are so cheap, tyan is trying to get rid of them, they are all old.

Your right. All of them are old but still powerful enough for most applications. We'll be stripping the CPU and memory from a bunch of Dell 1750's to move away from the expensive to replace U320 SCSI drives.

Yea mine came in today also. I'm sitting at work, sad that i'm not at home unboxing my crap! I've been pumped about this new equipment all week.

Anyone got any good place to find Cheap Registered Ram?

Ebay? Maybe? Just remember to purchase low height memory because it is 1U. Unless you got the 2U Opteron?

I got in a bunch of Kingston REG ECC PC3200 today. It's normal height RAM, fits in perfectly into the GX28's. Just don't buy the memory that is not normal height. Newegg is going to have prices close to eBay places, unless you can find a darn good deal on eBay. REG ECC still has pretty high resell value.

WooHoo!! Got mine in today!! Big thanks to the OP!!

I have 2 Opteron 270's on the way
Just need drives and memory...

(Now what the hell am I gonna do with it???):eek::eek:

LOL same here. Just got mine today and its awesome, yet LOUD. Hmm what to do with it  FOLDING

Mine came in, no CD-ROM drive :( but did come with all the goodies like rails, ears, heatsinks.

Now to get some dual core opterons. :D

I ended up with one of the P4 ones, and it is FLAKEY.. might have to return/RMA it It will lock up when you try to use the SATA ports, even with just HD testing software off the Ultimate Boot CD. Memtest etc work just fine and the hard drives came out of a working good server so... (as well as tried a couple brand new SATA drives just to test)

I wanted to toss in a small FYI for those who are going to buy a slim optical drive: I had a old slim DVD reader and swapped it out with one of the CD-ROM readers in the GX28. The front faceplace is just a smidge too wide on the left side and it bumps into the case top/front. I'm going to have to file that edge of the faceplate on the drive down a little bit.

Not all faceplates on these optical drives are the same size, so you might have to cut/file some of it off... Just be prepared for that in case. :)

Are all socket 604 Xeons compatible with the Tyan Tiger i7320 (S5350), or just the Noconas?

All 604 xeons work with the S5350 using bios version 105. Upgrading to anything above it will only allow you to use noconas, ie 800fsb.

Damnit! I wish I'd known that. I would have bought one. I have 2 3Ghz Prestonias just sitting in my room, with no motherboard for them.

You can still get one but it only allows for 2 hds. The other 2 bays are open and you could put a drive in each, the backplane supports it. Problem is you need another sata card since the motherboard only supports 2 drives.

So if the motherboard only supports 266/333 DDR RAM, how do we get 800MHz FSB out of the Noconas? I was a total AMD freak at the time these Xeons and Pentiums were coming out and I may be overlooking something?

I can't be totally RAM dumb. If I run the max (333MHz, PC2700) then I would only get 667MHz FSB out of it, right?

RAM and FSB do not have to be the same speed.

FYI: my 5151 was DOA and when they didn't have one to replace it with they just gave me in store credit, so now I have to figure out what I want to buy from them.. I'd have preferred a refund to my credit card.
