Large Hadron Collider in Pictures

it says installation of servers. probably just a layabout running batch ops.

Based off of the responses here, none of you have actually thought this over...

Nothing like this has been run before, it is a risk to mess with this stuff; even if it doesnt cause black holes or destroys us all. It will consume tons and tons of our time and effort in vain attempt to control something we are thousands of years away from even having a practical and basic grasp on... (Passive observation is the best way to go)

Do we really want a bunch of self styled scientists who want to "try before they die" (most of these guys are really old) at the expense of everything that exists! This is total madness, at every level!

I honestly feel this is a violation of my right to life, because of its sheer arrogance and lack of caring of the fact that me and 6 billion other people on this planet never had a say in this.

epic trolling

They spent all the money on magnets :D

Lay off the drugs... It will help you in your day to day life making decision.

And if it wasn't for advancements like this.. We wouldn't have the stuff we have now.. So plz.. STFU.. It's better for the world if you do.

I have a friend that is a physicist at McMaster U. here in Hamilton. He does all his work on accelerators, mind you not the large ones as the particles he is interested in do not need the energy created by LHC. Well, one night a few years ago him and his wife were over for dinner at my place. We were talking about the idea of LHC and he was explaining a few things. Now, he knows quite a few people in the field that he is in. Some do experiments on large colliders and some theorize that a large collider will indeed be the end of the earth. Just saying. I'm no physicist so I can't comment. Just passing along what a professor told me.

Btw, telling someone to STFU really shows your intelligence or lack there of.

Ah, now I see the film set location for Tron 2. I didn't know it was that big a budget film.

Or gateway to heaven.... anyway I think you need an darkmatter reactor for that

It is rather funny to read all those negative replies, here and on the official site
All those people should dump their TV, radio, mobile, computers, washmachines, microwaves, cars, bikes, shoes, clothes,... because its the devil

If this thing opens a portal to hell just federally mandate me a BFG and rail gun with a stock load of ammo. Hmm... could go with a refill cheaper than gas joke here.

All joking aside no matter how you feel about it, this thing is a piece of art.

How are protons smacking together at high speed a threat? Protons/high speed particles/etc are constantly running into stuff/each other up in space. Last I checked there were no black holes in the Earth's magnetic field despite some 4 billion years of bombardment by particles from the Sun.

Yes the LHC will be the end of earth, much the same way underwater atomic bombs blew a hole in the bottom of the ocean, causing all the water to drain out, and high altitude test blew away our atmosphere exposing the world to the cold hard vacuum of space.

have they even actually found one of these things in space. last time I remember reading up on the subject it was all still hypothetical and no actual occurances of these things have taken place.

i did some searching but if anyone has links similar to the pdf earlier on that are from the last year or so it would give me something to do here at work until someone breaks something

Awww, soo cute. Even Luddites can use computers...

Dude, they will make new particles that enable faster streaming pr0n!

Sorry i was tired and not thinking clearly.. Been trying to get over this damn sinus infection. :(

Particle accelerator? Atom smasher? Black holes? WTF guys?? That's just Blizzard's WoW server. How else do you think they can handle 9 million players?

I'm just glad to see science continuing to push boundaries. With as much as we spend on stupid things like war I'm sure projects like this could have been founded many times over and this actually benefits mankind.

No problemo.

I hope they do get some interesting science out of this project. I'd just like to add that my friend couldn't give a definite answer if anything would happen as he had not studied it, but he was leaning towards it being ok. There are physicist's that believe something could potentially happen, but the majority who have studied it are pretty cool with it.

I'm really amazed at the amount of pseudo-religious bullshit and conspiracy theory nutjobbery this thing has created. In the end, it will zap a few protons and give scientists some interesting data, until they build a bigger better one in a few years, and a year after this thing goes online, mainstream news will no longer cover it.

It's not really that big of a deal unless you're a boffin.

It's not going to end the world.

from what i studied on the subject so far (not a physicist by any stretch, just a guy who really got into studying the legitimate science behind sci-fi) the strangelets they are concerned about have yet to even be proved to exists, everything regarding them is still theoretical...and not like...evolution theoretical...like way way theoretical. I know MIT has some pretty solid theories going on regarding this, but still some of it is just best guessing from what i have read.

so in all honesty they could fire it up and end up without anything.

/slightly off topic

So whats the deal with NASA's big mars announcement? and why did they run it by the white house first?

/conspiracy theory

bet you could get some massive overclocks @ 3deg above absolute zero. :p

Frankly im all for a bitchen blackhole......Bring it on!!!!!

Based on the responses of:
'[RIP]Zeus'
'Injection of <3'
'JethroXP'
'sabrewolf732 2[H]4U'
'CyclopsSlayer'

Its plain to see theres clearly a lack of reading (use of brain also maybe) going on here. I expected more neurons firing from a site of this calibre; shame really.

The mentioned would do you well to re-read what was written and think about the reasoning rationally beyond their own knee-jerk reactions. Its embarassing to read their sort of stuff in response to a serious comment.
