Capcom Blames Piracy for Poor Game Sales

So lets see.

Oblivion was pirated all to the hell for the PC, and they STILL SOLD WELL.

Why? because it was a great game period.

Bringing out games on PC later then the console ports is stupid, people have them on console wont be buying it again on PC, unless it has some new MP portion or something.

Mass effect, DMC4, GTA4, Halo series.

Bring them out at the same time as the console versions, and i bet sales would be decent.

just my .02c

The economy is in the toilet and the oil companies are soaking up all the profits.. I'm surprised it's not worse!

Maybe if they lowered game prices, they would have a reversal of fortune?

Ya it is kind of hard for me to justify spending 50 a on a game lately when it cost more than fill my gas tank every week... especially if the game isn't worth the money...

what is killing ps3 sales is not piracy, but lieing to their customers. you cannot release a video of how the game will look like in 2005, and then in 2008 have the game look about 75% or less the same quality of graphics. its just not living up to standard. my friends love their ps3 and brag about the graphics on their hq hdtv... but when i see it i see it as a shinier ps2 game, not the ps3 hype they had for this game and other games before 2008.

for example killzone stated their game would look like such and such 2 years ago and showed a hq video .... however now their designers say "well i hope our game looks almost as good as that video"..

quit the bullshit. stop showing videos and images that were not generated from a ps3... this is hurting their game sales. capcom is known for doing this....

My God, why is the answer always piracy is hurting our game sells. If the game was a good fit for PC gamers in general they would buy it. The piracy rug hs been beaten long enough. No one takes into account that a lot of times people download it just to try it out and if they don't like it they delete it. More playable demos are needed! Another point is stop trying to bone PC gamers by releasing a version for us months later and expecting us to go crazy and buy it. PC gamers have a lot more options than console guys and don't have to rush out to buy the newest title. Oh and if you release it on PC make it modable, we can't go and trade in our games when we are done to recoup some capital to put towards more games. At $40 - $50 per game we have to be much harder on games to justify the price. If you made more damn console ports modable to give them more life for us we would buy them more.

Yet sadly, it suffered from console-itis as well. The default UI was made for fuzzy TV's rather than a detailed computer monitor!

What saved it, though, was awesome moddability and customizability. Even if I had a console, I still would have bought the PC version over it no question. Other game developers should learn from Bethesda's example. Oh, and more good single-player RPG's for the PC in general, please. ;) If I ever get a console, it may well be a PS3 (of the backwards-compatible variety, used, most likely) so I can play all the Final Fantasies that never made it to the PC!

It's simple.. It's a prelude to the next generation of copy protection and DRM!

Don't even joke about that. SecuROM is bad enough. Whats next an unholy marriage of SecuROM and Starforce with some good ol' Sony Rootkits thrown in for good measure?

I think it's just that DMC series is a "console" type game. Now, if they were to release Resident Evil 5 on PC?? Hells yeah!

If Capcom does that I just have two requests:

1. Don't let Ubisoft anywhere near it.
2. For the love of god make sure it has mouse support!

they did 4 and it was so much fail...

Thats because they let Ubisoft do the port. Since Lost Planet all of their PC games are being done in-house. Of course that means its only LP/LP:C and DMC4.

Any more damn DRM and I will lose it. It is a pain in the butt to have to deal with, and the only people that suffer are the ones who buy it. I have to download a no-DVD crack for all of my games to use them, and to hell with that well you should use the dvd in the drive. The game don't use it, it just spins up to say I am a disc and then that is it, you can even take it out after that. When you give up so much HDD space for these games you shouldn't have to insert a disc on top of it.

My god are developers really this stupid? Quit trying to reinvent the wheel. When a company comes up with a good model of how to do business and how to cut back on piracy, contact them and use there model. Steam has done a great job from what I can see. I didn't like it at first but it grew on me, their easy sign in is great. Also Relic has a decent model on Company of Heroes, but to bad the lobby is terrible.

Personally. I wish every developed followed Stardock's example. Stardock needs to publish a major multi-million dollar mega hit with no copy-protection at all on it and shove it in EA and 2K's faces. Not to mention Sony DADC.

I agree that the main issue with sales isn't due purely to piracy, it's due to the late release of the titel. If Capcom would have released DMC4 back in Jan/Feb when it released on console (I played the PS3 version) I think sales could have been more to their liking.

The same goes for RE4, but seriously, RE4 for the PC came out like a year later, did it not? I know it was way after the original Gamecube release that I had played and beaten multiple times (loved it =D ) before it even came out on the PS2, then later for PC.

I picked up the PC version just to see how much they improved textures and what not, it was better in some areas and worse in others. The game could've been so much more if it had been done properly and no mouse support didn't help. I've barely played it due to it being subpar and it being released so long after it came out on the GC.

I haven't heard of RE5 being released on PC, just 360 and PS3, which I will get one of the console versions, most likely the PS3 due to the fact that it's still my favorite controller, though the 360 controllers aren't bad, I have one for the PC and it's great.

Sales will suck of RE5 on PC if they do a port, unless it comes out within a month or two after the release of consoles, but honestly would fare far better with a simultaneous release which we will not see.

I do agree that piracy does hurt the sales of console and pc titles, but I'm not sure it's as bad as they say. I look at the price of console games now, $59 for reg editions $69 for limited/special/collectors editions and it sickens me.

If 2ksports/Sega could sell games at $19.99/$29.99 on release vs madden and other sports titles and make money, then it shows all games for consoles especially could be cheaper.

I think most games should be top dollar at $39.99 ...every other title inbetween $19.99-34.99, especially non-triple A titles. Sell more copies at an affordable price range, which would allow people to buy more games period and increase the revenue of the entire games market.

I'm pretty sure sales would increase and less people would pirate if game prices were in the price ranges I stated above. I've gotten to where I wait a few months for lots of games to drop to half price or to bargin bin prices then pick it up. It's the same game, plays the same, still just as fun and I don't get raped by the intial launch price. ;)

One thing I find quite funny is this notion of the PC being a heaven for pirates when I have seen first hand people with bucket loads of pirated games on the PS1, PS2, Xbox and 360. Piracy is all around, I wish they would bring light to that. But they won't because they want justification for selling out to consoles. Lazy bastards!

Lame lame, but hey its the bandwagon of today ... I didnt even know when this thing released. Yet I do hear about most PC releases, so kudos to the marketing genius behind this.

Why dont they release these games on steam, fucking wankers.

Lets not forget the PSP. I swear that thing has more piracy than the PC. Though CFW is great.

Anyway: Piracy has been around as long as we've had the ability to share files. Be it on a floppy, on a CD, or on the internet. Its not going anywhere. Nothing is going to stop it, ever. One day even the PS3 will be cracked. Publishers need to realize this. The sooner they do the better off we will all be.

It is just part of doing business. Only we get boned the most, we can't take back crappy products like other things and we don't ever get good down-loadable content!

I'm waiting for a company to tell someone to "buy another copy" when they ask for installs back and for that person to file a class action lawsuit against said company. Be an interesting test to see where the courts will side.

Thats the problem, so many types of DRM end up punishing the legitimate buyers. Now a system like Steam, that is great DRM. Takes care of DRM and does actual intelligent auto-updating and more. The purchasing users should get a better experimence, not worse! This is the problem with DRM right now.

True enough. If they realized it is better to make fast nickles over slow dimes, they might actually see some sale increases. Also if they actually put some work and, thought on making the games work like they should on PCs. I havent bought any PC games in awhile due to the fact you have had to download patches almost as large as the games themselves, with some games. Another thing that has made me not to buy is the corporate execs treating PC gamers like third class citizens.

You mean like Bethesda did with Oblivion?

oblivion was in insult to it's former fanbase?

oblivion felt more like daggerfall to me.. whereas i couldn't stand morrowind. i loved daggerfall..hell i still play it on my laptop occasionally.

I see more people with priated x box and psp...etc games than I do pc games.

I also dont know about what everyone else pays for games but, I for one usually wait till a game drops to 29.99-39.99 via sale or age to buy it. I almost never pay full price for them.

It felt like an insult to me. The a fore mentioned console-ities got to it pretty bad.

Depends on the game. Some I get right away, some I wait for. I'm waiting for Valve to have another 50+% off everything on Steam sale. I'm going to go buy crazy if I can afford to. I got V:tM, Psyconauts, X3, and STALKER during the last one.

gotcha, i can't completely argue, i modded the hell out of it before i even played it. So it probably fixed some of it at least

Yeah. Its great with mods. Its unplayable to me without them. Shivering Isles is one of my favorite game expansion packs though. Its so much fun. Lack of a horse is really, really, sickening though.

One quick reply to that, I have tried time and time again and can't for the life of me get oblivion to preform well for me to enjoy it. It has been thrown to the pile of unplayable games for me (far to many)!

Back to the topic, I really feel that it is the corptocracy that is doing more harm to the gaming industry than the pirates. Although pirate get on my nerves they do serve a valid purpose and we do need them. Seeing that their has been less and less true compitetion, the price of games have become stagnant. Pirates are the only competition and end up forcing publishers to lower the cost of games.

You know what, Crysis, and Im sorry, I like the multiplayer, was a shitty game that looks good.

I downloaded it because I would never have found value in paying $60 for it for what is basically a graphics showcase.

Make some good games that arnt infested with DRM, maybe we would buy them.

I buy PC games all the time. However, I have zero interest in this game.

That is the point, the game wasn't all that mind blowing and they want $40 for it. When I go to the store I don't think well Capcom said this is a good game and deserves to be purchased, I say which game will give me the most bang for my buck. The game honestly is only worth $10 - $20 tops!

bah i bought dmc4 this saturday so i deserve a cookie.

but seriously, what's their point: they just release it for an additional platform for extra money. there's no extra developer costs. maybe some beta tester checking if the pc build crashes somewhere. I understand crytek's point, but capcom? pfft.

console game developers rip off their customers with games that cost as much as 70 bucks while pc games cost 50 max, at least where i live. and console graphics suck compared to what my box can deliver and it's not brand new at all. dmc4 looks phantastic on the pc. i played the ps3 demo and it looked far less shiney.

Remember the $5 Prey deal on Steam a few weekends back? I haven't even downloaded it all yet. but I still bought it. Games like RE5 I wouldn't care anymore about the PC version. I am a dying hardcore PC gamer due to my "new" plasma tv and xbox360. The only games that I get interested enough to actually buy on the PC are FPS's. RE5 on the PC will sell shit if they do the same thing they did with DMC4. Why would I wait to play on a smaller screen and questionable performance?

With consoles actually being pretty damn powerful and competitive in that area, publishers and developers alike need to notice the effects of market saturation with comparable console versions of games they plan to release on the PC. Plus I bet a really good amount of people who "warezed" DMC4 for PC actually has the console version sitting with the rest of their PS3/360 games.

(GRRR EDIT) they want to sell more of the pc version RELEASE THE DAMN THING WHEN THE CONSOLE VERSION IS RELEASED

Yup, this is the LARGEST issue that I don't know why slips by developers/producers. There are so many next gen consoles out that buying a "new" game for the PC is a matter of getting a 6-12 month old game that they either 1) already bought 2) rented 3) played at a friends house, no big deal. Same shit's going to happen when/if GTA4 comes out on the PC, "poor" sales that will be attributed to piracy, forget the fact that it broke all sorts of records on next gen consoles (translation, just about everyone already fucking bought it).

Crytek whines about piracy even though they sold more games than they anticipated, that I don't get... "Piracy hurt sales"... "We anticipated selling 400k units, but sold over 1 million"... a then b, b then c.. a therefore Q? WTF~!?

You do realize that new PC's are vastly more powerful than consoles now, right?? In fact, yours is as well.

They release a PC port for a game many months after it's console debut and expect a game (that obviously plays well with a controller) to sell well on the PC???

I mean I could understand if it was a port of a FPS like Resistance Fall of Man to the PC, then you would have a reason to buy the PC version since it would make the game fun all over again with the better set of controls....

But DMC4? More like DCMC (Damn Capcom May Cry).
