I think I'm getting too old for video games.

Hey I hear you Mav. I'm 24, in the same boat, and going crazy. I go out with friends and stuff but that typically ends up the same every time, which is getting old as hell. Everybody ends up somewhere drunk and stupid then I wake up the next morning feeling like I wasted time and money for nothing. Gaming used to be my fallback from that life style but now games aren't keeping my interest very well anymore and I'm finding it hard to fork out money for any of these half-ass crappy games that have been released lately. I typically wait 1-2 weeks after a game is released then read reviews on gamespot and other sites, usually to find a mediocre review which makes me lose interest in the game.

I guess I'll just keep trying new things and hope something clicks that I can pick up as alternative pass-time to gaming.

Well, I am turning 37 this sunday and there have times where I felt a drought of some kind but I dont think I will ever be too old to play video games.
My tastes have sure changed but still playing strong. I grew up with the 2600 but didnt get anything after that till the genesis. Got my first computer in 96 to play Quake and played that for about 4 more years, still have it installed on my current computer, lol. I find I used to be huge in multiplayer games but not so much anymore. Never liked CS, didnt and still dont like realistic FPS'. More of a fantasy based gamer. I dont like things that are too close to the reality of things I guess. I play games because they are games, not simulators.
I find myself playing more sandbox, fighting and arcade racers nowadays. Been playing my 360 more often as of late instead of my PC. Cant play FPS on it so I have to be choosy with what games I get for it but so far I love what I have bought. Crackdown, Tony Hawk, GTA IV and Soul Calibur IV. Some people might stay GTA IV is pretty realistic but I would like to see anyone survive 3/4 of the stuff you can do in that game and still be alive today.

Eh, I am 30 too and I would say I am more layed back with gaming but it is still my hobby. I think you who are tired of it just need to break away from it and do other stuff.
Forcing yourself to play isnt going to help you and it is kinda silly. There is nothing wrong with you if you take a break I would say your in a better place because gaming isnt a obsession but more of a hobby to you now. I would just turn off your computer for about a month, take your wife out and stuff.

Solomon of the bible who the bible says was the smartest man who ever lived said that Everything under the son is pointless.(Ecclesiastes 1:2) I kinda like that phrase because it just shows us no matter how good a game, computers, or any other hobby we get fun out of .. in the end its just pointless and really nothing is going to fill your heart to be satisfied except God. I will probably get flamed for saying that But I dont care I have lived long enough to have experienced it myself.

I agree with OP, I am 19 though. I used to love playing GTA's, Mafia, Max Payne. Right now I just game online, with friends. If my buddies were to quit, I think I would go with them.

I tried playing COD4 SP, Crysis, as well as most other great games that got good reviews. I end up playing for about 20 minutes prior to getting bored to tears. I guess times has changed for me.

Just stop playing games for a while.

After a while, you'll enjoy it again, although short lived.

Thats how it is for me.

It's like being a wine connoisseur, only the finest taste are acceptable to your palette. I get it buddy, so do a lot of us. In fact these types of threads seem quite common. Although I don't agree with your tastes completely because half-life 2 was one of the games I had finished in a year or so.

I'm 41.

I think you go through phases. I was heavy into D&D when I was younger, but gradually stopped, although I know other people my age that are still regular players.

I have a large game library, but I noticed that fewer and fewer games have been coming out lately that I might be interested in. I suffer from a shorter attention span than I used to, and it is rare that I finish games any more (I felt good about completing MotB just recently). I've been playing MMOs almost exclusively (WoW and AoC), but am getting burned out.

I wonder if there are any more original ideas in gaming. I had high hopes for Spore, but fater seeing the Creature Creator, they are not so high. I need a change of pace, a good RTS along the lines of the old Warlords Battlecry series. Even though it will be yet another action RPG, I have high hopes for D3, although who knows when that will come out.

I am 20

And I have already felt the interest drop in games, i bought a ps3 earlier this year, but generally I just can't put my attention to it I find my dad plays it more than I do. The game I have the most fun with now is WoW, I in the past was a huge fan of RPG games, western and japanese kind, but I find the market has so many of the same thing, I have never really enjoyed a game like I enjoyed my days playing baldurs gate etc

I would of thought its me getting older, but I do honestly think its not me its the industry.

I am 24 right now, been PC gaming since '96 (Duke Nukem 3D and Mechwarrior 2 FTW) but had a fairly large break between 2001-2006, during which I was using the same computer that was purchased back in 1998 or so...then one day I decided to build a new computer, it just happened to be in the fall of '06 when all the new stuff came out (I got the 8800GTX when it was first released, excellent card). The first thing I did was go back and play all the games that I wanted to play that came out during my falling out with gaming. I still play some old titles from time to time, I actually just beat Vampire: Bloodlines a few weeks ago, and that game was really fun and enjoyable.

However, gaming has changed drastically since 1996. What happened to the Mechwarrior games? What happened to Decent and Decent: Freespace? I think what killed gaming for me was a lack of broadband, actually I blame that as the reason PC gaming has lost popularity to the consoles. When Quake 2 was in its prime, me and my friends always wanted to play online, but ended up frustrated because we only had 56k at the time, broadband didn't arrive until 2001 or so, after I graduated high school.

If only Mechwarrior 5 would come out....or Descent Freespace 3.....however I loved Mass Effect. Like others have said, it comes in phases. My dad is 53, bought himself a PS3 and was addicted to Oblivion for a long time haha, he had pong waaaaaay back in the day lol, so if he still likes games, then I would imagine that anyone could get back into it with time.

I may be the oldest gamer in this thread.
Been gaming since the early days of Duke Nukem and Doom.

Also started on an Amiga 500 which was way ahead of it time
for graphics and speed.

Made the PC's of its day look and feel archaic.
Amiga games were quite good and I really enjoyed them.

I've played well over 200 titles, but now I can truly say its all
boring to me. The challenge is gone, and I've moved on.
My next system, may not be a gaming rig, unless something
turns around and new ground is broken..

In the last few years I've bought maybe 2 games.
There just not worth it to me now.

i dont even see the point of getting a 4870 or 280 with the state of gaming these days

jesus christ do this ID, DOOM vs QUAKE, you could totally mix the 2 universes, strogg using portals to conjur demons and stroggin them instead of another standard zombie game or god forbid another military realism shooter. Yes doom vs quake would be a nice looking standard affair fps, but with an atmoshere and story along THOSE lines i would more inclined to finish it + if all the enemies had as much class and character as the original doom had i think it would be great.

And bioshock sucked hard, how the fuck do you basically remake system shock with LESS gameplay features in this day and age, its called console games, they seem to pride themselves on making engaging gameplay with 4 colored buttons.

I'm 44,

Been gaming since ... well pinball was around ... that's pre-pong for all you young'un's :)

I still enjoy MMO's but there are only so many time you can play a Dwarf, or Orc, or Super Hero, or ... you get the picture.

I loved Quake (the first one) and can't wait to find the next game tha makes me jump out of my skin again.

Bioshock only receives an B- from me, pretty game but just not all encompassing.

I'm going to be 35 in December. I grew up with pong, Atari, Colecovision, Commodore 64etc.--video games were my life. My proudest video game moment was completing Double Dragon with one quarter. I've been playing PC games for the last 15 years or so.

I have a decent rig--E6600 & 8800GTX, so I've can play most games just fine. The problem is that I now get bored very quickly. I have become extremely picky. It has become very hard for me to overlook cheesy, unrealistic, and/or games that are linear. Believe it or not, the only FPS I've been able to stand playing for the last few years is America's Army (despite being linear). Now I can't stand it anymore either. Half-life 2--started out liking the graphics and whatnot, but I just can't take the linearity, or the fact that I can't climb a friggin fence. Roleplaying games have always been my favorite (Ultima, Bard's Tale, Wasteland, SSI boxed, Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Bethesda's stuff, etc.). I just can't play them anymore. I can tolerate Morrowind for a bit after spending a couple of weeks researching mods. But, I still get bored. RTS, simulation, whatever = boring.

I always go back to Jagged Alliance 2 (v1.13) when I'm desperate, but even that doesn't appeal anymore. Sometime I play online yahtzee. Can you believe that? I may just start writing the book that I've been thinking about for a few years now that I'm not playing games all that much.

Is anyone else a lifetime video game freak who is now bored with video games?

I think its time you went back to your roots, and go buy a console. You seem to miss the 'fun' but remain locked to your PC playing hardcore games that are more of a chore then relaxing.

Go pickup a console, sit on your couch and play some genres you haven't touched in years.

I feel the same way, at the very least, games don't hold my interest for as long as the used to. Maybe that's normal for people passing 30 (just turned 30 myself) even though I myself grew up on Atari, Coleco and Sega and find it hard to imagine life without it.

I think I blew 1000+ hours on GuildWars and Titan Quest combined and I really have no place for that in my life anymore. I enjoy offline RPG's and FPS games only now (although TQ was offline) but strategy, MMO and stealth games (splinter cell, call of juarez) fail to hold my attention and consume too much of my time.

I actually find myself enjoying tweaking and researching now as much as actually playing the games, maybe more in some respects, but the game is definitely the validation of all my efforts. Because consoles lack this aspect I do not purchase consoles anymore either, nor do I enjoy console style games (for the most part) or the universal appeal. DreamCast was the last console I put anything into and I had an X360 for about 3 months but sold it due to lack on interest and the money I was churning through on both systems (PC and X360).

It might be a natural progression, or it might just be some of us but I agree with you. I just play for shorter periods of time and I'm more selective now, but I don't think you need to necessarily phase it out all together, maybe just take some time off.

I'm pretty young compared to everyone in this thread, turning 19 in September. I really haven't played a PC game seriously for a year probably when I had a cs:s kick last summer.

I just bought a Nintendo DS though, along with pokemon diamond - and according to the game, I have over 41 hours logged since I got it on July 17th! I bought Orange Box for PC about a week earlier and have barely touched it, by contrast. Haven't started HL2:ep2, played TF2 for about half an hour, and finished the first 2/3 or so of Portal until I got bored of it.

Oh yeah, I think I had some time for Painkiller in between cs:s last summer and my "no pc gaming" stage of today. That game was sick, check it out. I liked it because it was SIMPLE - you start it up, it loads quickly, then you start killing demons from hell in inventive, creepy levels - and it's challenging at times, but not a chore like some games seem to be for me (oblivion, hl2). It knows when to be blatantly unrealistic and just plain fun - could be a combination of badass metal riffs and excessive gore. I'm getting a decent video card in my laptop for college for the sole purpose of loading this up once in a while.

you just have to find a game that interests you. Not what everyone else says is good - most people love orange box, cod4, oblivion, etc. but nobody talks about pokemon diamond, which is what I ended up spending 40 hours in two weeks on (still playing, but stuck on catching legendaries).

I'm getting to the point of being unusually picky and spending less and less time doing them. But I think its a good thing, not a bad thing. I'm to the point where if I can't level or get some sort of advancement to show off i don't like it. However sports games seem to null this for me I really like those.

Sadly, I am seeing myself on those words as well.

I have been a PC gamer since 1984 when I entered junior high school and was able to plug away on the Apple II+ we had at school.

I must admit that my excitement level for games has dropped dramatically. I remember being so excited about halflife 2, doom3, and jedi knight academy, when they were being developed.

Maybe diablo 3 announcement made me feel good inside, but i am not so crazy about any other games being developed right now. Other than that, i still have fun moments in the games i play, esp COD4 online. Yesterday, i got 2 kills with one sniper rifle bullet. Thought that was hilarious.

Hell I remember the release of Escape Velocity for Macintosh, followed by Half-Life, then ultimately the opening of EverQuest beta which pushed my gaming addiction to an unnatural level..

Maybe the amount of time spent playing games over the course of my life is why I'm getting burned out on video gaming. I just don't feel that same run and excitement I used to anymore. I've already played a dozen games in every possible genre I can think of.

I will be 35 in December and i got burned out in 2006-2007 and did not play a multi-player game till the end of Dec 2007. I have been online but just not playing games BUT when i went back online..............OMG i was loving it!!!! I cant get enough of TF2(ask my wife she hates the Heavy) and i will be playing for another 2yrs or so. As for the games getting lame i agree with most of you guys. I'm a single-player type of guy(Painkiller,Bioshock,Crysis,COD4,Orange Box, GTA4,ect) and i dont think these devs put in enough time and effort to make games like they use to. Just my 2 cents. :(

didnt read the whole thread, but I'm the same way...gaming since mid 80s or so and its been fun to see things change, experience new genres and expand play styles but now it seems like everything is bright and sometimes overly complicated or poorly narrated. I cant play shooters anymore, havent tried crysis or COD4 for example and I keep my xbox exclusively for sports games and racing games(great way for me to unwind) and my PC doesnt see anything but RPG and RTS...

I tried ninja gaiden's latest demo and was blown away by the speed and graphics but ultimately uninterested :(

I'm 37. I grew up laying Atari 2600 (likely flipped the score on Space Invaders 5x in a row before my parents made me go outside). I graduated to a C64. After that, I moved on to the Amiga. Since the Amiga, I've had PC's.
Games have been part of my life since I was about 9 or 10 (Timex Sinclaire count?)
I did reach a point a few years ago where I had seen enough. I wasn't getting much out of my games. I also found myself needing time away from the computer.
I met my wife several years ago (non-gamer, non-sci fi, non-tech). It was a huge change in my life. We moved in together, got married (hence the wife part ;)), and now have 2 girls.
During that hiatus (about 4 years) - I really didn't play any games. I played Peggle on occasion. Sometimes I'd play another simple, casual game.
With my life I have now, I have very little time to play games (and still not a strong desire like I had in the past). However, I still like to play games every now and then. I am very picky about what i'll play.
Currently playing Stalker. I might get 3-4 hours a week in?

My point (not sure I had one): you likely do reach a point where games are "empty". You no longer care how many frames per second you get. You no longer care if a game supports anti-aliasing, 3d holographics, blah blah. You just want an occasional diversion.

Sometimes - you just want to sit on the couch and have a beer.

I'm going to turn 47 years old on Sunday and I am still an active gamer who attends occasional lan parties. I'm not able to play as much as I used to due to family commitments and my job but I play at least an hour Monday through Thursday and about 2 to 3 hours on Friday and Saturday. I used to enjoy shooters alot but for the past few years I've become a huge rpg fan on the pc and the console. My latest obsession is Persona 3 FES.

Its not your age, im 27 and I feel the samme way. Crysis was fun but was not worth the $300 I blew on the card to run it. I seem to have more fun tweeking the hardware to run games and then I don't even play them. Kinda ridiculous.

GRID looks cool, Racing games usualy have alot more replay value for me, but I haven't played any great ones in a long time... Like rock and Roll racing for SNES, that game was the shit. F0 was cool too. Time to break out my xbox and disregard my PC...

I honestly havent played a game in several months....Unless I was at the bar getting drinks.

I'm 18 and I've been feeling this way for about 2 years.

However games like Splinter Cell, keep me somewhat amused. The main irritation for me is that many of these games require nothing but pressing a button and holding the analog stick/pressing w.

The games need to get better...We need another System Shock 2, but this time we actually need to buy it! A proper Thief game (like I and II) would be nice too.

TTLG I miss you! Come back!
