Soul Calibur 4?

I completely forgot this was coming out today. I got out too late to pick up a copy but I'll be playing all tomorrow night!

it sounds disappointing to me (ign :p) and i was expecting alot. i'm gonna keep playing tekken 5 until tekken 6 and sfIV come out.

nice rental tho, i'll have to play it before saying anything objectively.

picked it up today, put it in 360....RROD so I guess I won't be playing it for awhile.

The few matches I played last night at my friend's house seemed cool, but I'm hardly about to give a full-fledged review.

M$ just sucks at making hardware, period.

Actually MS had a long legacy of making exceptional hardware (peripherals mainly) its really only the 360 that was a total mess. The whole Sidewinder series was awesome, the IntelliMouse, etc.

I think the first rule of people who use 'M$' is to selectively ignore all the great products and services that microsoft has put out.

I bought it for PS3, and it's pretty great so far. The fighting system is fun, although it takes some getting used to for newbies (I'm new to Soul Calibur, having mostly played Tekken previously). Still trying to figure out repels, and these "just" timed moves are insane. The character customization is also excellent. I could spend hours just playing with that.

The game looks amazing. It runs silky smooth at 720p, the characters are incredibly detailed, and the animations are very well done. The sound is also top-notch; the hits have a lot of impact, and some of the big ones actually get my subwoofer rumbling, which is rare for a game.

I tried to get into an online match a few times, but it didn't work out so well. The host left the first one I joined before it started. Two after that were already in progress. The host kicked me from the fourth match because I don't have a headset (asshole). The fifth just disconnected me before I could get in. I gave up at that point... not encouraging. I'll try again later today.

Definitely recommended if you're into fighters at all. If you have a choice between 360 or PS3, the pros and cons on both sides balance out pretty well. Some people have reported that the 360 version is either not 720p native (possibly 640p upscaled) or it employs some kind of bad blur filtering, as some scenes are overly soft and are missing detail compared to the PS3 version. On the other hand, the PS3 version doesn't currently grant Trophies to go with the in-game achievements you unlock, and it doesn't have custom soundtrack or rumble support (yet, anyway).

Also, for PS3 owners, definitely make sure you go into the options and install the game. Load times are almost non-existent after installing the game to the hard drive. 360 owners will have to wait for the big update before they can install the game.

One of the best ones yet. Been playing SC since the first Soul Blade came out. The character customization is amazing on what you can do. 360 online fighting has been great so far. Was playing with a friend from new york and I live in NC and we had no lag.
Feels like some of the combos on some chars have changed but overall the returning chars' moves are very similiar. The addition of customizing your skill sets with different equipment and weapon choice will make a big impact once you raise your skill level in each char and unlock more items.
They revamped a couple things like the skills and blocking. If you block too much your equipment will get nocked off while you fight and if all of it comes off you can do a "finishing move". Looks awsome but mostly just a FMV cut scene of you taking out your opponent.
Dont have a PS3 but even if I did I think I would still get it for the 360 for Live and Achievments. I hear you will be able to have Vader for the 360 in the future so thats a moot point. Not really into it for the Star Wars guests anyway.

I havent noticed any graphical problems with the 360 version myself. The game looks amazing to me, first game that looks this good with no slow down whatso ever. Only reason I would think there might be some blur is to focus specifically on the face of a char with a telephoto style blurred background.
I cant wait for the installing game to the hard myself either but I am not noticing long loading time to begin with.

I've seen lots of people on my friends lists for both the 360 and PS3 playing the hell out of it.
I've never really been a Soul Calibur fan, but this one seems to be a big rebound from the horrid SC3.
The only one I played was SC2 and it was just so I could be Heihachi and Yoshimitsu...but mainly Heihachi.
Tekken 6 and SF4 are the ones I'm waiting for, too. Those new SF4 videos show a lot of interesting combos and a pretty wacky new counter/parry. I'm psyched for that game more than ever.

Picked up the PS3 version and have had fun with it so far. Story mode is kinda fun, although a bit easy on "Normal" difficulty. Tried arcade mode once with Darth Vader and got my ass handed to me.

Definately need to warm up the SC muscle/brain cells again. The tower sounds like good fun. I should probably try the training again to get the hang of guard impacts again, etc.

If it's anything like Tekken 5 DR then I wouldn't even bother trying to play randoms, only decent games online I had with that are with friends who I invited.

That's a bit of poor show by Namco having no rumble.....also you'd think they'd have had plenty of time to add custom soundtracks/same trophies as 360 achievements?

I much prefer logitech ;). Computer accessories and computers (such as gaming consoles) themselves are completely different things, Sony and Nintendo have much brighter history making them.

i have found the game to be pretty fun. considering i really didn't like soul calibur 3 which was weird with me. the character creation and customization is pretty cool. i just wish you could customize your character with the lightsaber. i have the 360 version so i have yoda. he is pretty fun to play with when he is bouncing all over the screen but i can see where it would suck to play against him and always having to attack downard. the apprentice is pretty cool when you unlock him, and can string together some really nice combos that do massive damage. i don't know about the online aspect cause i don't have high speed internet at the moment but its all cool single player. the story mode is pretty short. yoda only had 5 chapters i believe. but there is plenty of fun to be had from this game. i enjoy it. and the levels are pretty good and the music is very well done

I've had it for a week, unlocked all but one character (which I think is reserved for DLC Yoda, because I've done pretty much everything there is to do in the game and haven't unlocked it), and finally got to play it online on Monday, when the servers finally went up (PS3).

In short:
Singleplayer: pretty bare-bones compared to the other Soul games. What I mean is that there's no Edge Master/MIssion mode. Instead, we get some lame Tower of the Lost Souls crap which features the most cheap AI in the history of fighting games. Then there's the standard Arcade mode and the laughably short Story mode.
Multiplayer: local is fine. Online... wow. What lag. I, personally, don't think fighting games such as this, Tekken, and VF should be played online, because the slightest bit of lag can throw off your game in an instant, especially against cheaper players who use the same move over and over.

In the end, the fighting system is the best in the series, in my opinion, and I think that makes up for the rest of the game's low points.

How are the controls. I played DOA 4 on the Xbox and found the controls to be painfully hard to master for anything above simple moves. Do the controls compare to DOA 4 or are they easier?

Well, its a completely different fighting system so it is easier to control than DOA. There are many different counter moves in DOA which SC does not have. I think SC is more enjoyable than DOA personally.
Online with the 360 is very smooth and I had no lag whatsoever last night playing with a friend up in NY, must be a PS3 thing or you were really far from the other people.

This is what I was hoping for. Sweetness, probably pick it up sometime soon then.

Depending on what you like about DOA, Soul Calibur is either a lot better or a lot worse.
DOA really only has 2 mechanics. You either strike/counter/throw and if you're on defense, you have to learn how to block pretty much each and every string in the game or know the points where they can be countered.
SC's a lot less stringy and counters are more like guard breaks than flat-out reversals.
The gameplay for SC involves a lot of movement and well single placed hits or short combos.
DOA is all strings and counters.

Is it me or can no one else beat arcade mode? Apprentice is hard as hell and so is the guy after him, forget his name. Then again, I've only been playing for about an hour.

PS Vader sucks ass.

Yeah, the apprentice is a PITA sometimes. You have to find ways around his combos and watch his force meter. I think the game has a learning curve and learns what you like to use. Switch around alot. I was having problem fighting him with Rapheal once and I decided to use nothing but kicks, as you might know Rapheal is not the best kicker but it took down the apprentice with no problem by doing this(cheap, I know but I just wanted to clear Rapheal thru arcade). Same went for Algol(the guy after him), I switched around and just blocked/side steppped and used throws and he died quickly.

Is the online net code as bad as everyone has been reporting? This is honestly the one confirmation im waiting on b4 picking it up. I like a good fighter, Soul calibur has never been a fave of mine, but if the online ends up being not a disaster as reported, ill grab it.

I wouldn't say it's a disaster but it can be pretty bad. I've had some smooth matches, though.
Just make sure you're on a wired connection, and hope that whoever you're playing with is as well.

I've only done a few matches online but didn't have too much trouble finding some (PS3). They can fill up quick which is a pain at times as it is filled by the time you click on it. Of course there is some lag, that's to be expected. Still very playable though.

Lol my blue intellimouse still works fine after years, I think.

So is the case of the online lag limited to the PS3 or does Live have its share of problems too? I know Live for the most part is excellent but lag can happen as I remember from past DOA and SF2 matches. I am still in debate over which system to get it for although I am leaning towards the PS3 mainly for the controller and that a couple friends with PS3s will have it and I tend to not like playing randoms too much as I would with the 360. Also Vadar seems like more fun I'd think but I heard rumours of DLC for the 'other' character on both systems at some point so if that's true then it's not an issue down the road.

I'm a little curious about PS3 vs. 360 lag, too.
Tekken 5 on the PS3 tends to lag a lot more than SF2 does on the 360. Granted they're totally different types of fighting games, but I'm wondering if it's the network and not just the game.
In SF2 on the 360 the main thing is that the lag level is VERY steady. The speed the game is running at in round 1 typically holds true for the whole match.
In Tekken, you might be running flawlessly one second and be on black bars (aka. lag so bad the game virtually freezes) 2 seconds later. Then all of a sudden you might have another perfect connection the next instant. It's VERY up and down.

How's SC for both systems in that regard?

Not sure how it is on the PS3 but for the 360 if you get a spike of lag it happens at that time. There has been maybe 1 or 2 times in the 50 games I have played with a friend where we hit a spot of lag. We both notice it though so either one of us did not have an advantage over the other. Wierd thing we noticed last night we both decided to play as yoda so he could get an achievement and both of us noticed lag with hits but not with any other chars. Didnt know if it was yoda or just lag at that peticular time.

I'm confused, as far as the lag it shouldn't be one system is worse than the other, I mean it's P2P so it should be based on your connection and who ever your playing's connection wright?

Reviews have said the same thing and I play with my cousin who is about 400 miles away and we both have good connections (PS3) and so far its been smooth, but I think the deciding factors gonna be what your speed is and your opponents.

I've had some very smooth fights where there was no noticeable lag, but then I've had matches where it completely threw me off.

I think it could be a netcode thing for certain games. I have friends that I can play games like SF2, DOA, and the other XBL games with sans any lag at all. It's almost like being on a LAN. However at the same time, with Tekken things are a total mess. Red and black bars galore, especially if we ever had voice turned on.

I think it's not really a system issue as much as how the game's netcode works.

Hopefully SC's code is better than the PS3's Tekken netcode.
