Remote PC Apps??

I am looking for a good remote PC app that will allow me to control 1 PC from another over the internet. At work we use Timbuktu Pro but that is a pretty old software. I build PC's for friends and Family and who ever wants to buy, so I need something to offer tech support with out having to explain myself a thousand times over the phone.
 
Search for a thread maybe few weeks ago, about remote support, lots of good options. i use logmein rescue but its expensive, may try to use something else from reading that thread.

pretty much install server client, have people download exe and then ur on their machine.

logmein rescue allows people to go to website type in a pin code and run a exe. can chat, boot into safemode, transfer files, run scripts yada yada. but its like $1200 a technician for it. the ones recommened in the thread didn't seem to support that. logmein free allows you to connect, also boot into safemode, no file transfer, but user has to go to website, sign in with a username and password and install a program.

if you want to go with logmein free, say if you sign up as [email protected] make a email like [email protected] with a easy password as a secondary admin to add computers but not view or connect to others (i believe you can do that) thats it, and then have ur users sign up with that account so they cant get access to machines.
 
There is only ONE solution that you need and that is logmein.

The free service is awesome, you can use it with as many computers as you like, and it is ROCK solid and does what it needs to without being bloated like many others that actually cost money are!
 
another vote for LogMeIn Free. It's what I use to support all my friends and family. We use the paid services at work for a few clients that have crappy firewalls that don't support VPN and are too cheap to upgrade. :D
 
i just tested logmein and i gotta say this is a very nice program.To bad i only got a 15 day free trial, Anyone know how much does this cost monthly ?
 
aww the trial version is not so hot like the pro version, I think i missed it though is their a email invite threw the free version
 
all these posts and no mention of tightvnc or realvnc?

both much better than any of the programs that have been listed imo.

why is it better?

so you get to talk clients through configuring ports and static internal ips? so you get them to download a software and setup the configuration then finally get access to the machine?

not better in any means.

logmein free, add machines, doesn't \need to static assign or port foward.

logmein rescue is even better, client goes to website, types in 6 digit number, and i am on machine, can do file transfer, boot into safemode, yada yada.

That's not a remote support application (as mentioned a few dozen times in the original "Remote Support" thread I posted a while ago and linked above.

VNC, like PcAnywhere, Timbuktu, CarbonCopy, etc...those are all remote access programs....that require a host mode to run on the host PC...require ports to be opened/forwarded on any/all software and hardware firewalls. So if behind a NAT router...now you have to go through the issue of static IPs for the host behind the router. And then...track the WAN IP address.

To support random remote users...this is often done over the phone. It's usually a non-computer literate user on the other end...and they usually are not savvy in navigating about firewalls, configuring TCP/IP, etc etc.

***Picture walking a dumb end users through all of these steps...

With some flavor of VNC.... install it...yes ma'am..download, save to desktop..OK how? Just save..yup..unzip it...double click..
Configure password
Configure software firewall to allow it
Configure router...ports open/forwarded...oh crap...a CPE router supplied by the ISP....what's that admin password again to log in? What's LAN IP address of the router?
Oh yeah..redo the host machine to static IP addresses
Get the WAN IP address

30 minutes or more of futility later I'd be ready to slam the phone down

Versus a remote support application such as GoToMeeting, EchoGent, or some of the ones that have been named above so far...

Click on the "Join a meeting" button...say "Yes" to the ActiveX prompt..
OK....say "Yes" to allow me in..

...thank you....I'll drive now.

//phew ...that was easy eh? Just a quick browser based active X program for her to click on and say yes...no firewall configuration, no router configuration, no TCP/IP configuration, no needing to find her WAN IP address.... :cool:

OH...and newer remote programs based on Citrix technology are many times faster and smoother than the old VNC or PcA flavors.
