I have now completed my first build and am very happy to have it complete. Or at least, I want it to be complete. I dont know what fan(s) are the problem, but I notice that the machine is very loud.the only thing I have to compare it to is my old HP pavilion which's practically silent, but then agian it only has 1 case fan.

My new computer rivals my window fan on low speed, which is quite loud. I have an antec 900 case, with many of the fans on low, if not all. I dont believe they are the problem. (now, if I turn them up to high, I can hear them, but that seems natural).

My mobo is an EVGA 122 nf68 680i, with the heatsink fan installed. This may be the problem. I'm interested in a possible replacement for the fan (it runs from 3500-4500rpm).

My CPU HSF is an arctic cooler freezer 7 pro 92mm, which may be a problem. I cant be certain beyond what I think I hear, but it seems to be a bit loud. It is currently set at 70%, going 1800rpm.

I'm looking for what can be done to make it quieter really. What can I do to make it quieter, and how can I test these fans? Sure, I could unplug them, but I dont know if that's safe, especially for the cpu hsf.Of course, there are other fans too, that could be a problem. My psu seems to be silent (corsair 650tx), dont know about my vid card.

Thanks

OOh, one other issue I'll mention that I dont know about is.. I installed vista home premium 64bit on it, but I notice that every time it turns on, it will post, then it will stay there, asking for F1 to continue, or DEL for bios, but will not move on on its own. is there a way to have it continue on its own?

both those fans shouldnt produce too much noise.. post more specs on your computer.. what video card are you running? pci slot fans? etc.

also, if your cpu cooler is a 3 pin, and is pulled into a 4 pin slot. make sure you specify in the bios that you are using a 3 pin. failure to do so will make the fan spin as fast as possible, and is loud...

as for your bootup problem, that means that some hardware changed, case is open, or it failed to post. go into bios and then quit out of it and it wont come back. also, think about changing the bios option "halt on" to none, or all but keyboard.

If you are referring to the Chipset heatsink fan, that may sound loud. Try removing it and see if your pc is quieter. It could be your Video card also. Some video cards fans are louder than others. Your CPU heatsink at 1800RPM shouldnt be loud at that speed. If it is your chipset fan, remove it and add a 120MM fan on the side of the Antec 900 case. This should cool your motherboards chipset and sound quieter.

my vid card's kinda sad I suppose for most of you.. an evga 8600gt, 512gddr2.

Lets see... I think it's post-ing, but I'm really not quite sure since uh... this is my first time building a computer. I did an extended post, which resulted in the same as a quick post. I'm not seeing the options to change "halt on", or to check the 3 pin thing. I believe it's a 3 pin in a 3 pin slot though anyways.

Thanks for the advice HardwareGuru, I'll give it a try (probably in the morning since it's 1:30 am now)

((the following's a bit random, just felt like saying something))
To be honest, I really dont know what I'm doing. My old computer, which I'm typing on now is slow and well, just not very good, but at the same time.. I installed vista about 12 hours ago, and most of that time, my new computer's been off since I just dont know what to do on it lol. I feel silly now.

For your F1 problem, there should be an option in the "Boot" section. Just look for it TBH.

As for the fans, make sure that they are all plugged into the headers on the motherboard, then you can go into the "Power" section and set them to the quietest setting possible.

The fan on your graphics card can be slowed down in Rivatuner if need be. But, you might want to watch the temps. While it shouldn't get too hot, I wouldn't really risk it.

when your pc is on open the side case and put your finger on the gpu fan lightly to see if the noise decreases when you do this. If so this is the culprit.

Probably not the most exact way to do things but I briefly stopped all the fans/slowed them down. The mobo fan is the culprit, seeing as when I stopped it, it gets much quieter. At the same time, I did notice that the 8600 fan was the next loudest, but it's much quieter in comparison (I'll be replacing it soon/eventually..). I might just remove it for now, my board stays at or below 30C at the moment, so it probably wont be a problem to not have that fan until I get a 120mm fan for the side.

And after like 20 minutes of looking, I finally found the options for booting in CMOS heh, so I got that taken care of.

Thanks everyone

If you're not OC'ing, then you shouldnt need the mobo chipset fan.

The Antec 900 isn't exactly the quietest case around. Its designed for best airflow, not silence (P180, etc). You can replace those Tri-cool fans if you want. Jab-tech.com has some Yate Loon fans that are pretty cheap (under $5 each). Go for the low dBA, high CFM fans -- medium or low speed 120mm.
