I would like to get a program to rip DVDs to my computer. The discs I want to rip are created on my camcorder. There is no copy protection or anything like that. Any recommendations on something that is easy to use and preferably cheap?

dvd decrypter also. Its been discontinued but is easily found around the web.

dvdshrink its free

Ive got a question about dvd shrink. When i rip dvd's... how can i get them back playable again? ive never known how to do that... I get the audio_ts and the video_ts folders... how do i get them playable in a program?

they'll play in powerdvd, vlc, and wmp(if you have a dvd decoder)

Shrink the folders using DVDShrink. I think the tab should be labeled "Compress!" or something like that. It should give you the option to compress it into an iso file which you can then play with VLC or burn to a DVD. You can also rip the DVD into 1 big .VOB file and convert into an AVI file that using VirtualDub.

+1 for DVDShrink.. Just hit the rip, or compress button to rip it to the HD..

then VLC media player has an "open Directory" or "open folder" opition that will play the video_ts, and audio_ts folder.

keep in mind that there are many DVD's that DVD Shrink will not rip. Many folks use a multiutude of tools to get their movies converted to ISO images, or to rip the VOB files out. Here's two pooular methods:

1.) This method involves using all freeware tools, but it's a 4 step process, and you have to get all of the programs downloaded invidually. The first one is "RipIt4Me" It's a front end for the the next program: DVD Decrypter (already mentioned). RipIt4Me basically allows you to do a 1-click rip from the DVD to your HDD, and automatically scripts DVD Decrypter to remove the VOB blanking, and correct the menus and such. After RipIt4me/DVD Decrypter finish doing their thing, you open DVD Shrink and point it to the folder on your HDD where the ripped files are now stored, and convert the files to an ISO (backup mode). You can then burn the ISO using ImgBurn.

2.) Pay for AnyDVD. After it's installed, right click the image in your system tray, and tell it to rip the Disc to your HDD (note that newer version of AnyDVD also support ripping Blu-Ray and HD-DVD to disk as well as DVD, so if you're doing HD content discs, you can use one tool for all formats). After the rip to your HD, load DVD Shrink (for DVD's only...HD formats require TONS more work to convert) and convert to ISO using backup mode. Then burn with ImgBurn.

DVD Shrink (if used alone) will occassionally fail on a DVD rip, or on compression. Sometimes the process will appear to go successully, but the disc will not play back in a standard DVD player past the preview or menu screens, due to DVD Shrinks inability to handle VOB blanking and fake tile sets.

I have 5 tools available: RipIt4me, DVDdecrypter, DVDshrink, DVDFab decrypter and AnyDVD.

I have only just got the AnyDVD software and haven't really evaluated it yet.

I normally use the free version of DVDFabdecryptor and fall back on RipIt4me if I find a DVD that DVDFab doesn't like (I, normally, don't compress the movies with shrink to keep the best quality).

(hint; if you cant rip the whole DVD try taking just the main movie - it saves hard drive space too!)

Enjoy!

Does anyone use CloneDVD it is made by slysof the same developer of AnyDVD?

DVDFab Decryptor Free is pretty awesome for being free. You can rip the whole disc or main movie and it is updated on a regular basis. I use it when DVD Shrink won't decrypt. As for a commercial solution, DVDFab Decryptor Platinum or AnyDVD+CloneDVD both are highly recommended, but i think DVDFab is preferable as it is an all in one deal (can rip dvd's and convert to other formats, ie Divx, mp4, etc) where as Clone DVD will copy DVD's but will no decrypt them by itself (needs AnyDVD running to decypt the DVD) and AnyDVD just does the decrypting but no ripping... does that make sense? I've used them both and have had success.

Another vote for DVD Decryptor. I use this to rip all my DVD's and I use PowerDVD or VLC to play them. Very simple to use, and doesn't take too long.

I've been using DVDClone+AnyDVD to rip and burn my DVD's. I have kept backups of the DVDs on my hard drive all in .vob for now. I am getting ready to build an HTPC and want to have them in a format that uses the least amount of space but retains most of the picture quality and audio. I'm not sure if there is something I can do with all of the .vob stuff I have now or will I have to re-rip all of my DVD's...

steakman if you've created these on a camcorder and you want to make direct copies I would use DVD Decrypter, it's one app that will let you rip the files to an ISO image and then burn them back no quality loss.

If the discs start to give you problems I would try DVDFabDecrypter first in whole disc mode then either use IMG Tool Classic to create an ISO file from the VIDEO_TS folder or burn the folder directly to disc with it.

I would stay away from DVD Shrink if they are home movies since you likely want to keep everything intact and not lose quality. And while you can copy in DVD Shrink at 100% quality or No Compression I would avoid it for 1:1 copies.

I use DVDshrink for basically everything. When there is a newer copy protection (happens occasionally) that DVDShrink cant handle I use "Ripitforme" to get the data off the DVD and then use DVDShrink to compress it. Only once have I had to use DVDFab.

yea i pretty much use the same variety that others use mainly dvd decryptor although there is some kinda slysoft program where it auto removes the dvd encryption upon insertion into the dvd drive so it reads without any secuirty
