Ever since i upgraded my vid card from an 8800gtx to a gtx280, i have not been able to run AoC with a good framerate.

Here is what happend:
1. Played AoC with 8800gtx no issue on high.
2. Got the new card
3. Uninstalled my nvidia drivers for the 8800 gtx
4. Shut down installed GTX280
5. installed new nvidia drivers for 280
6. Ran Aoc and got double framerates, no problems at all.
7. Decided to tweak up my settings since to make it even better.
------------------------------BAMM!!!-------------------------------
8. Dropped to single digit framerate, never been able to get back to where i was before.

So now what happens is:
1. I go in and delete the two shader cache files that everyone talks about. try and adjust the vid settings, but its not working. It will be good for a period of time, then all of the sudden DROP hard to single digits. Even if i reboot the system, it will be low when i go back in. I know right away at the char selection screen that its slow.

I got the latest BIOS and drivers for all my stuff.

Any ideas what to try? (im dreading an AOC reinstall, but will do it if i have to)

See sig for my rig setup.

Just a quick thing to try, have your CPU at stock clock and reset BIOS, then load BIOS default. Try with that and see if the same thing happens.

I'm sorry, but I don't know why you have that problem. However, I would be interested in knowing what you find out. I currently have an eVGA 8800 GTS 512MB, and plan to Step-Up to a GTX 280 next month. If I were to get the same problem as you, I would like to know how you fixed it.

Didnt think to try that, but i will.
Also, i an not using a PCIe-2.0 powersupply. I had to use the conveter to get the 8-pin working.
Wonder if its a power issue. I can run any other game like COD4 maxed without a hitch.
Havent tried crysis, uninstalled it. I may try that as well.

AoC take like 3+ hours to install. 2 dvds + almost a 1gb of patch downloads. I dont have a problem with this, im just lazy.

Yes, I know how long it takes, since I play it :) I hope that re-installing isn't the solution, but if it is, it is.

Problem solved. It a known issue with the card downclocking.
Rivatuner fixed.

Thanks for all your help.

1) install and run rivatuner.
2) got to the poweruser tab
3) goto Rivatuner\Nvidia\Overclocking
4) Set EnablePerfLevelForcing = 1.

Im not sure after that.
The problem just occured.

Do you need to leave Rivatuner running?

Ack :( Well, I'll make a note of what you did, and continue to follow this thread. It is possible that you need to leave Rivatuner running. I've never used it, so don't know much about it.

It's throttling..either because of the heat or lord knows what. My GTX 260 did the same thing playing Crysis. I got smoking framerates for 5 mins., then it started to overheat and throttle and I could never get it running right again. The damn card knocked out my mobo BIOS...I mean a complete reset, even the date said Jan. 1, 2002.

People are saying problems with these cards are just a few incidents. I bet 50 percent of these cards are defective.

We'll I have had four (had to RMA one) so my defect rate was 25%!;)

Sounds like its throttling due to either heat, or insufficient power for the GPU. I know you have a 850watt PSU, but could the rail the GPU sits on be segmented so its not providing enough power? Can you borrow or try just the GPU on a different PSU?

Ok, think i found a temporaty solution this time.
I uninstalled RivaTuner and ntune.

I installed the evga percision tune and simple turned up the fan speed to 100%.
That was all i touched and it seemed to work.

So far so good.

May have already been answered but does this only occur under Age of Conan? What temp does your 280 run at? If it is getting to upper 90c i.e. like 95c-100c under load that may be something to look into.

Anything under like 85c or so don't be alarmed. Many people will tell you otherwise but those cards run hot.

This happens to all graphics intensive games.. Whenever the 280gtx gets loaded, even before the card gets hot, it throttles down. So by doing this via riva tuner, you are preventing it from throttling down. As a protective step, you should also set the fan speed at around 60-70% to keep the gpu temp down.

So far we have not heard of any fix coming out of nvidia yet.
