Hi everyone,

I found a local seller with a used Opteron 165 for $60 CAD. I thought these were selling for $200 (I have S939) so its kinda one of those too good to be true stuff unless this CPU is beat to near death. What kinda things can I ask the guy/girl or what kind of things can I do to check if this CPU is still good to go? Thanks!

you should take it
its nice price

for 180$ you can take opty 180 from ebay :)

buy it! it would go for a hundred on ebay. and it would be an excellent upgrade for you.

I'm using one still and with sli'd 8800gtx's my gaming is very much full of eye candy in Grid and COD4.

Thats a great price, I'd buy it in a heartbeat if I was still using a S939 mobo.

Buy it, mine is still going strong, its saved me a lot of upgrades. Most programs arn't even written for x2, so quads are over kill. I'm waiting for someone to show me how out dated my system is speed wise in gaming if I were to add the next gen video cards. As their saying most gaming is off loaded to the video card. Remember the adds that said "Look how your CPU doesn't have to work as hard, the %age the cpu has to work is way down. Now were putting the physics chip in to boot". pretty soon you will have a console, just an expensive one. My son is still using a single core 148 0pteron and he's at 2.9 also using a 3870 and for gaming it doesn't miss a beat, but keep that under your hat, the Industry doesn't like to hear that.

I have an opteron 165, and it overclocks like a beast. For 60 dollars, you'd be a fool not to take it as long as it works. It'd be a nice upgrade, and the Opterons have more cache than what you have in your sig.

i'm running an opteron 165 also.. been having trouble overclocking with my new motherboard so it's at stocks speeds right now.

Rocking the Opteron 144 here at stock speeds =P. Pretty solid chip! Haha. I'd get the 165.

thanks everyone.
I emailed him back to set up the transaction :)
Oh yea, it was mentioned that he ran it OC'ed to 2.3ghz for 2 years straight (without any problems)
I plan to run it 1:1 with my ram (which should give me around 2.25ghz also)

what kind of life expectancies do CPU's have especially when OC'ed?
I could deal with 1 year life left (if thats even realistic) but I wouldnt want my $60 to die within the next several weeks or few months.

and no, I wont be reselling this :p :p
I'm doing a lot of photography work and I *neeed* something faster/better than my current one.

Oh yea, updated sig,... it's been a while since I was here/doing computer stuff.

yeah good thing your getting it. Opteron tend to do well. running my 170 at 2.81 with stock voltage. At this point man, might as well skip the am2 since am3 is 6-8months away. 165 should be able to hold you over for now :p

Maybe I missed something, but the Opterons 1xx and 2xx are socket 940 cpus, and wont fit in your 939 motherboard.

yea, i cant afford to upgrade just yet. and my CPU is my bottleneck right now so I figured if I upgrade that, OC it, I should be okay for the next several months or so :)

I might be picking up the CPU today or tomorrow. Thanks again!
And yes, Opty 165 can be S939 :)

Single core 144 up to I believe 155 after that were duel cores. They were 939 pins, I know for sure because the 148 I gave my son was a 939.

I would. Opterons are known to clock close to 3.0ghz with a decent board and cooling. my Opty 170 still runs nicely at 2.8ghz

hey everyone, thanks again for your feedback.
I took delivery of this opty 165 i mentioned.
my buddy kept nagging to get a cheaper one, but the guy was kind enough to let it go for $55.
I didnt realize that he was selling me a retail package.
I got the box (yes the box, omg!) manual (new in plastic) and the heatsink which i think he never used cause its very clean..

I'll put her on her new home sometime tonight.
thing is, i forget how to overlock, lol.

If you're not planning any super oc'ing and that stock hsf is the one with heatpipes on one side that is a winner to!

Swapped a 165 for a 170 and kinda wished I had it back! :D

You will really enjoy it as my unprofessional opinion is it was/is the best bang for the buck in 939.

Yea, its the one iwth the copper stuff and heatpipes. I'm using my AC arctic cooler 64 though.
I forgot to save my BIOS wwhen I set things to default. I booted up and im like. wtf 2.25ghz???
lol anyway guys i might have a little issue.

my software CPUZ is showing I only have a single core:

i gotta go out now but i'll check back later and figure something out but if anyone knows what to do, please help me :D

It is showing that it is a dual core but the software will only show one core......yours showed core #0 and mine shows #1 :rolleyes:

This is showing one of my "bootable" settings but sadly my little mATX Biostar 6100-939 wouldn't let me get to 3.0 or above. :(

thanks everyone.
what kind of life expectancies do CPU's have especially when OC'ed?

I wouldn't sweat it. Many people have OC Socket A for 4+ years without any problems. By the time a processor actually "dies" you should have upgraded AGES ago :D.

Use a divider, and see how high it goes;) I've never heard of a chip that can't do 2.6 at least. If you didn't get a CCBWE chip, I'm sure 2.8 should be quite easy to get, too.

CCBWE 0607UPGW
I probably won't get to 2.8ghz huh?
I'm trying to re-read my manual right now.
OC results will be posted later.

PS: I turned off the PC last night and came back this morning and turned her back on. I noticed CPU-Z now shows two cores. :D

Yea, so I got it to 2.6ghz but it wasnt stable. i was using 1.47v. but that was only reported to be 1.40v in CPU-Z?
Anyway, I'll try again later. I might just have to tweak things here and there.
Although I don't mind running it at 2.25ghz. plenty fast for me and I notice much better (faster) performance with my .RAW files which is great!

hey guys.. sold the opty 165 and went back to my a643000+.. clocked it to 2.63ghz and if that's stable, will keep this CPU for now till another $50 somethin dollar dual core or x2 comes along. thanks all for your help.

thanks everyone.

I wouldn't worry about the life expectancy. Usually, if you keep the voltages at a conservative setting with proper cooling, it should last for a very long time. Take my Athlon XP 3200+ for example--it has been overclocked it to 2.5GHz for the last 4-5 years and still haven't had any issues.

I have an Opteron 165 also, with an eVGA NF41 motherboard.

Can't get it much past 2.25, but that's because my RAM sucks I think. Kingston Value Ram. It's rock solid at 2.25 though.
