The Official P45 Asus P5Q Motherboard Thread

Till the day you get a bad flash and then you will prolly not like that program anymore :D

Can anyone explain how the DieHard BIOS feature works? I had a motherboard bios get eaten in a bad flash before, so I liked the look of that feature. It is one of the reasons I bought the p5q-deluxe.

Anyone played Crysis on Deluxe?? Extremetech couldn't get it to run.

What about the P5Q-E ?

"Crysis refused to run on this board, citing that it detected an emulator, and gave absolutely no detail beyond that. We experimented extensively with MSCONFIG, gradually eliminating startup programs and then services, invalidating a fair performance test, but we failed to determine the cause of the glitch before deadline."

[H] played the SP demo of Crysis just fine according to their P5Q3 Deluxe review... 'Course they encountered a whole bunch of other quirks with it, but they might've been dealing w/early BIOS/releases (they did mention they went thru several of them to diagnose a HDD conflict).

I wish they'd review the regular P5Q... Or that someone other than Tweaktown would run some P45 CrossFire benchies y'know.

I've played Crysis on my p5q-e no problem. Beta bios if that matters... dunno. I did have stability problems before but I chocked that up to sketch OC.

What's going on with the new 0803 bios (date 2nd July)? It makes AISuite give much lower temps. The previous 0704 bios gave readings from AISuite pretty much inline with Core Temp. Now with 0803 I'm getting readings some 25 degress lower than Core Temp. Only details related to 0803 are

"P5Q Deluxe BIOS V0803
1. Update CPU temperature detection rule."

Sound's crap to me.

They probably fixed/updated it for one series of processors and in turn broke it for another series entirely. Did they ever update SpeedFan so it reads the same temps CoreTemp reads? I knew they were trying to...

I believe AiSuite is reporting Tcase. Intel hasn’t yet released the TJunction Max values for a variety of desktop CPUs (including mine), therefore core temps can’t be trusted on those CPUs as core temps are calculated using the distance from TJunction Max. These temp programs are guessing at a TJunction Max value and therefore often their results are highly suspect. At this point I’m only trusting Tcase. Core temp should be ~5C or so higher than Tcase for a quad core.

You gotta be kidding me, that's not an issue with the MB. That error means the game sees you have some sort of cloning S/W or DVD ripping S/W running on your system. It’s basically an anti-piracy mechanism in the game. I’m guessing they didn’t realize they had that S/W running in background. Extremetech are going to have egg on their face in short order over this review.

tgabe213 inspired me to attempt an extreme cable management on my rig. So I stripped it down and went at it. After fives hours later…

I removed the PS stickers and moved them to the other side of the PS, drilled a large hole above the MB and routed the octopus through it, modified a desk grommet to finish it. Shorten and sleeved the HSF cable, routed the audio-USB-power-reset-etc under the MB, and flipped the HDD around to hide the power and data connectors. Anyways... here's some pics...

I also did a bit of OCing. I ran my Q9450 up to 3.4Ghz (stock HSF :D). 424 FSB and 1.3v. Benched using wPrime. Ran stable but touched 65C (Tcase) under the stress test. I'll post the screen shots once I find my damn USB key with the pics on it.

Here is the benchmark of my Q9450 running at 3.4Ghz on the stock heat sink / fan.

Q9450 on P5Q Pro OCed to 3.4Ghz with stock heat sink fan

I really like the Six Engine application for simple mild OCing. After extensive testing, I adjusted the Turbo mode up 16%. Now, at idle it drops to a 6x multiplier 2.3Ghz but under load it immediately jumps to a 8x multiplier and 3.1GHz. Vcore is 1.176. Under load it never cracked 50C. Perfect! :D

Has anyone had trouble running 2x2gig kits in dual channel mode? My P5Q-E will not post in dual channel mode for some reason. I've been reading that a lot of people are having trouble running kits in dual channel mode. Just wondering if anyone has some sort of solution to this problem. It doesnt seem to be brand or model specific problem.

Last time I tried they wont let you add a promo code to a combo deal.

Running the set in the sig.

do all models have problems with the velicoraptor??

I sure hope not, just bought one.

I earlier reported an issue with a 150GB "older" Raptor, but it is a non-issue, my mistake.

One or two others have reported Raptor issues or incompatibilities, but I don't know what the issues are supposed to be.

Just got my P5Q set up! So far ive got my Q6600 to 3.2ghz on 1.3v, pretty simple really, ive got a OC'd 8800GTS 512 and managed a 15,400 in 3dmark 06 default settings.

Nice marks. Man I sure like that Q6600. The stars aligned on that one. I think we'll be talking about that chip for years to come. It's not not the fastest horse in the stable at this point, but for price/performance and OCing it's pure magic.

I'm kinda surprised the Q9300 hasn't come down more in price and replaced the Q6600... Isn't it cheaper for Intel to manufacture? I guess there could just be a whole lot of Q6600 stock left still...

i just finished installing this sucker last night, so far the mb is great and it sure is durable i had to put almost all my bodyweight on the goddamn reaperII heatsink i got to get it to flipping mount, so it can take 220 pounds of force ^ ^

Just got my P5Q Deluxe up an running this weekend with an e8400. Setup was smooth and easy and a joy really. I'm not sure about that six engine software myself. Messed with it a bit. I assume the multiplier changing from 6 to 9 in CPU-Z is Showing me the throttling? If not that is just weird.

Just got Vista X64 up and running this weekend on my Pro and it flys like a bat!

Couple that with a 3.4 ghz oc and it's a monster. Just wish I had the cash for a new video card.

Did you install all of the Asus utilities? I noticed they are 32bit apps but they seem stable.

Yea i was wondering that same thing. I've been looking at the P5Q Pro for a while now but have heard some horror stories with x64 Vista. I guess if your running it with no kinks then its worth a shot.

i have a 7200 and asus p5q pro runs awesome
iam using vista home premium 64bit 8 gigs of ram
cpu oced to 3.6ghz

No problem. Did you get any other goodies for your shiny new MB? :D

Nope, just a new board. My Gigabyte P35-DS3R decided it doesn't like booting anymore and is currently being RMA'd. God knows how long that'll take.

Yep, all but one of P5Q boards supports 16 GB. The exception is the P5Q WS which only supports 8 GB.

You realize you'll need a 64bit O/S if you want to expose more than 4GB of memory, right? Actually XP 32 bit is 3GB, Vista 32 bit is 4GB, Vista 64 bit Home Basic is 8GB, Vista 64bit Home Premium is 16GB, and Vista 64 bit Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate are 128GB.

I had one give up earlier this year, or I thought it went bad. It wouldn't even POST, just a black screen. On a hunch I pulled all the cards and it fired up. It turned out I had a Firewire card that went berserk and the MB was fine.

Early on MS tried to enforce a "no unsigned drivers" rule on Vista 64. The idea was that Vista 64 was a workstation O/S and needed to be rock stable. Of course not all the drivers the users wanted or needed to run (such as nearly every Asus driver I've ever used) was signed and it was a nightmare. MS has dropped the requirement.

When running 32bit apps in Vista 64 sometimes you may have to "open as administrator" to get it to launch. Other than a few nits, I really like the O/S.
