FYI if you have been waiting to start a step up, the MSRP's have dropped. 499 for a vanilla 280. There is a shitstorm brewing in the forums over there now for everybody who has already stepped up. Glad I pulled mine and decided to wait, saved 300 bucks.

Ya, there are a few retarded tardbuses over there.

^ does that sound retarded? er, redundant?

They waited until just after my step-up deadline to do this.

Fuck off, EVGA

(I still <3 you, but why you gotta hurt me so....)

Great news, $330 actually seems like a good deal for the GTX260, though I'll still give it atleast another month before I consider stepping up from my current eVGA card as prices should still fall further.

As far as people bitching about the price drops, they need to stop being dumbasses. You buy tech within the first month or so it launches, and you're going to pay a premium to get it first (same thing applies to people who bought the IPhone). If you honestly don't expect prices to fall, then you need to find a new hobby, where the industry dosen't change so fast. Companies like eVGA and Apple aren't responsible for reimbursing customers due to market changes.

Those who bought the iPhone as early adopters did receive a refund.

Hawt damn!!!. Bought an 8800GT for $179 minus $50 dollar rebate (invoice shows $179), GTX260 shows $329 so (329-179) = $150-50 = $100 for step up.........$100 + $130 I paid for my card = $230 total out of pocket (plus shipping) for a GTX260.

Ironically, my MSI GTX260 will arrive tommorrow which I scored for $279 AFMIR.

QFT. Yeah, if you want to save money you wait. I paid $650 each for my GTX 280's at launch so I could have waited and saved money. But then I'd be three weeks behind getting the system up and tested and running, so that's worth something, not $450 for sure, but I knew the prices were going to come down based on the 4870 numbers.

So yeah, I'm a dumbass, but its not like this is surprising or anything. Buying tech and not expecting this type of thing is just not the way it works.

This post makes me happy, after poking through the evga forums its good to see that {H}ard members have their heads on straight. Yeah it sucks, but hey, got a great performing system, and reality is prices go down. Some people are actually threating to sue over there.

X2. inevitably there will be some asshat that posts in this thread telling heatless he threw away his money and he should have waited. some people don't get it.

Well, I'm certainly not implying that early adopters are dumbasses. Some people really love this stuff and want to get it as soon as possible. The ones that are rational about it, like you, understand why they paid so much for a product even though they know that in 3 months the price will be much lower. The stupid ones make the assumption that prices are static, and then come on the forums shocked and whining when they realize that that same product is now $150 cheaper.

Edit: To the guy a few posts above me, I do remember that Apple did reimburse people for the Iphone when the prices fell. I just believe that it wasn't Apple's responsibility to do so, just like it isn't eVGA's responsibility to refund its early adopters. Frankly, if people continue this behavior, I wouldn't be surprised if companies like eVGA and BFG quit allowing people to step up at all.

The gtx 280 was a special case. Everyone knew that the 4870 was going to come out a week after the 280, and that the 280's price would drop because of this. And it did. This wasn't a case of the price dropping gradually over time as usual, and this wasn't a matter of months, it was a matter of a few weeks. Anyone who rushed to buy a 280 on launch day is just a moron with more money than brains. You could have saved ~180 per card by waiting less than a month.

And don't give me that crap about how "you needed it now". Unless you want to play Crysis maxed out with AA (how many times are you going to play Crysis through? I beat it once and I'll probably never play it again) there's nothing out there which requires the 280, or two, or three of them.

It's not really that cut and dry. People who bought a GTX 280 on launch day should really have known and anticipated the 4870 and the resultant price drop. The ones that did aren't stupid, necessarily. The question is whether or not the savings are worth the wait. For some, upgrading ASAP (for whatever reason) is worth the price premium.

Yea, well, it might be worth it to them, but it's still stupid.

not a bad deal, i'm stepping up my 9800gx2....only 4 bucks now for shipping..not a bad deal...

Something is horribly wrong with your math.
You subtracted off the rebate twice in your calculation, one in original price and one more time in difference for stepping up.

Let's say, the first card you bought cost you 129(after rebate that is you got 50 back in your bank)
total paid: 129
EVGA sees the card as 179, so asks for 150 dollars more for the step up, which you have to pay to get GTX 260.
paying: 150 extra plus shipping
total paid: 129+150 = 279 plus shipping

which is 50 dollars more than your estimate which you subtracted off twice from your total in your wrong calculation.

It is the same price as the MSI you paid for and then some(shipping) but it is still a win-win situation for you.

Happy for you, I am going to step up, too, to gtx 260, I was unsure before but now since I will only be paying 20 bucks plus shipping, it will be foolish of me not to.

Here is an official email/forum post from Joe Darwin regarding the step ups and the MSRPs

Joe Darwin said:
GTX 280 & GTX 260 Price Update

Everyone,

If you have already signed up for the step-up and your product has NOT been shipped from the EVGA office as of 7/8/2008, then EVGA will correct your pricing to the updated current MSRP as of 7-8-2008 5pm PST.

Please allow 2 – 3 business days for EVGA to modify those that have already paid and are in queue or will be paying.

If you have already paid and we do a refund, please allow approx 10 business days for you to see this on your statement.

Due to the terms and conditions of the Step-up program, once a transaction is complete there are not refunds, exchanges or exceptions.

Thank you,
Joe Darwin

Are the ssc edition worth the extra 20 bucks? Are they cherry picked? or are they just the same thing but factory overclocked, if they are cherry picked it might be worth the extra 20 to me but if it's just an oc'ed gtx260, I will do it myself.
What do you guys think?
Wait a minute, do they even offer anything but vanilla for step ups. I think they don't, I haven't checked the step up thing yet, will do it tomorrow. If it is, the question still stands.

Doh, yeah, you're right, $280, but that's still a good deal.

perfect, this is what i've been waiting for. i just bounced over to evga's site and stepped-up my 9800gtx that i bought about a month ago to a GTX 280 for $245 :)

wait wait wait. There is a price premium for living on the bleeding edge?!?!?! NO WAY!

I paid $409 for my EVGA GTX 260...if I step-up I only pay $90, right? That would be sweet since the main reason I bought the GTX 260 was to ste-up to the 280 at a later date. Should I wait longer, I'm happy with my 260 right now.

if you're happy with your 260 then wait and see what else is down the road. refresh? further price drops? i stepped up to my 8800GT on the last day of my eligibility.

Ah it is good to wait. Cancel step up 2x.. finally the price reduction happened on my 3rd queu... $7.99 to go from 9800gx2 to 280 is sweet.

This is great. I bought an 8800 GTS 512 for $280 about a month ago and have been kicking myself with all that's been happening lately. Now it won't cost me much at all to step up to a GTX 260.

Heh, just cancelled both of my stepups. Glad i never pulled the trigger on the 9800GTX stepups. Man i'm so confused now :( I have this brand new DFI x38 and 2 4870s but can go SLI 280 for 500 bucks. Ugh. ugh ugh.

What a bummer. I went ahead with the GTX280 Step-Up from my 8800GTS 512MB because my window of opportunity expired shortly after the GTX280 came out, and even though I knew prices would go down soon, I really didn't have a choice about initiating the step-up.

My GTX280 arrives tomorrow according to UPS, but it shipped out to me just *before* the price drops, so I might simply be screwed out of $150 by a day or two. And some of you feel I deserve this?

Unfortunately you cannot stepup to the Overclocked models as stated in the terms. You can only stepup to the reference clocked 260 and 280s priced respectively at 330 and 500.

Edit: because of these price drops im stepping up as well. :D

yes because you werent forced to upgrade and you knew full well of the terms of the step-up program (or least should have, if you are using it)

Good for you, RussianHAXOR, you deserve a new card. GTX280? I have my step-up GTX280 coming (shipped today) from EVGA. I couldn't believe how fast I advanced from #255 on the quenue. And the 280 was shipped almost immediately after they received my GX2.
Now I hear I may get a few bucks back from the price drop. Does all this EVGA goodness ever end?:p

Looking forward to hearing how well the new card performs for you:cool:

Initially i was going for the 280 but then didnt think i really needed it, so i went with the 260. But yeah, i was amazed by the speed that the queue was moving at as well, much faster than ive seen in other cases.:D

I wish you all good luck and i will be sure to inform you all once my card comes as well as will change my signature once i get it. And i will be sure to try to get the best OC i can out of it. :)

Wonder if that is an indicator that they aren't selling as well in retail as previous versions, so they have a lot of stock to service step-ups. Sticker shock may well have slowed the retail channel this time.

From what I've heard so far, the 260 is another rocketship, especially when overclocked. They are overclocking very well too, so it is looking really good for the 260. If I didn't already have a GX2 for the step-up and had to buy one outright, I would have gone for the 260 as well. There will be no lack of firepower regardless:D

I mean it doesnt seem like it was that drastic that i would consider that it was due to sticket shock simply because i waited about 2 weeks and now im #9 in the queue which isnt that fast, but its pretty fast considering ive moved about 600 spots. :D

It also really depends on the allocation they get, if EVGA gets a large allocation they can allocate more initially to stepup. Which may have been the case.

Thanks:)

Yeah this is good news, i was very happy to read the review that took the 666mhz edition(lol @ the number i just realized that). And overclocked it to what? like 760? and it ended up outperforming the stock 280?! :D I cant wait to get mine. Ive heard the 260s are better overclockers so i cant wait.

All of you benefiting from this need to be sure and thank evga for being an awesome company. Especially if you've already stepped up and are getting a huge deal, or the unheard of refund.

If I had already sent my 8800GTX in for my stepup, I would be receiving the GTX260 for free, not counting shipping.

That's un-freaking-heard of. And it's just because I'm a customer.

So needless to say I asked if I could step up to the 280 and actually give them some money in the deal. If they say no, they say no, but I made sure and said thanks regardless of what they decide. Even if I had to pay the $60 I had originally expected to, it's still an awesome deal for someone who bought technically an 'old' card like I did.

All we ever hear about is the bad, because people bitch the loudest, and say thanks next to never. Especially enthusiasts. So if you are benefiting, tell them you appreciate it. It never hurts to show appreciation, and in this case, they deserve it.

To those of you screwed over, I feel for ya. I think everyone who's bought any type of consumer electronics has been screwed over by a price drop at some point. Hopefully if you are just a couple days out they'll make exceptions, but they have to draw the line somewhere. I don't think anyone deserves it, but it is the nature of the beast.

That's good but EVGA should of dropped the MSRP any way if you think about it. I don't think they deserve praise for doing what they should of done to begin with. GTX280 is still overpriced, should be priced at about $390 or so. Many are complaining about overheating issues, flickering issues, etc. Once the 4870 1GB version comes out for $350, and the 4870x2 come out, gtx280 should come down to about $399 or so...that is if Nvidia can afford to do it, which i'm sure they can. I'm not surprised ati cards are selling like hotcakes, people are fed up with Nvidia and their small performance refreshes like the g92s and the 9800gx2. People want high performance and better pricing and that's exactly what ati gave them.
