Apparently Sony has yanked the PS3 2.40 firmware update it released yesterday after a number of complaints from people with bricked consoles. I am not sure what this means for those of us who have already installed the update…I guess we just cross our fingers until the next update?

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3.

yeah I read this.
and apparently the new shelf versions of the PS3 have this firmware installed.

I just can't believe all the issues (firmware, cancellations, installing games.....) the PS3 is having.

rofl, yet another in a long line of Sony F ups,how does something like that get by quality control? :D

wow, glad i didnt install it. how can such a major issue get through the testing they must have done on something as anticipated as this? unbelievable, an official update bricking consoles, im starting to lose faith in Sony.

Works just fine on my 60GB PS3.

We won't be forced to downgrade back to 2.36 will we?

60gb version installed fine for me.

My only complaint was DMC4 didn't allow for in game music... sad...

My guess is that the next patch will check for an install of 2.40 and if installed, undo the crap they did and then apply the new patch. That probably won't be the easiest thing to do. It is beyond me how this happenned, somebody in the QA department probably lost a job.

I'm just glad I am out of town and wasn't home to beta the patch on my system. I'd rather not brick my system, even if it was covered by warranty.

Lol I could care less, I have the original HDD as a spare, and I backup my stuff everyday, but it is not cool to have a major percentage of bricked ps3s from the firmware update.

I believe this is the first "Bad" firmware sony has released. I have owned the PS3 since launch day. However since you would obviously like to entertain us with your revile for Sony, let's discuss just how many Bad firmware releases and Bricked consoles they have had hmm? I am pretty sure it is high since i have had 3 Bricked 360's myself and know several other people with multiple bricks.

That said, I own the 60Gb version as well. I got the firmware before it was yanked and had no issues.

Good move by Sony if the firmware really has some sort of problem because this should prevent more damage, however I don't think that the problem is that significant from what I've seen on polls in various forums. At least the number is much less than RROD issue. I've seen two RRODs with my own eyes but have yet to see a bricked PS3.

I think that if your PS3 is fine after the update then there is nothing to worry about. From what I've read, people who have a problem with the update will have it directly after the update.
