Those of you that own a PlayStation 3 should grab the latest v2.40 firmware update. This latest update brings a whole bunch of new features to the PS3 including in-game XMB and Xbox-like achievements. Fire up your console and start downloading! Make sure you post your thoughts on the new features in the comments section.

I downloaded it.. then realized no one patched the two games I actually own.. go figure :(

the official playstation forums are blazing with 2.40 possibly bricking some systems. other systems need thier hdd pulled and formatted in a pc and then replaced in the ps3 for it to work. mine stayed at the wavy background without the xmb loading. after a few minutes i got an hdd error message. luckily after a reboot it worked fine.

When mine was updating, my screen went black and i was like Uh Ohhh, then it came back and did its install thing and went black towards the end of the install. I don't think its the ps3 bricking, i think its people messing with it while the screen is black!! All in all the update is good but they left lots of things out and i can see them adding things in future updates to fix it, like not being able to copy a movie while watching one... wtf is that...

mine installed fine, just like any other update.

I haven't had time to try any games. I will later on today though.

no, most are bricking after it's done.... after you press x to reboot. the "blinking" between sections has been around since i had my ps3 (april of last year). most of the bricks i've read happens after rebooting the system. you either get the sony comuter entertainment splash and nothing or you get the wavy bars and nothing. it seems as if you get the wavy bars only, you may have to just format the drive.some get nothing but 2 beeps and a powerdown.

i don't doubt there is the occasional brick because someone is impatient, but to have this many already is strange....

installed it on my system this morning..no problems
iv got mgs4 and when i ran it there werent any updates out =/
seems to run fine, xmb does takes a few seconds for the stuff to load, not a big deal..but imo my 360s in game xmb seems superior

downloaded, works fine for me.

xmb in-game is cool, but i can't play my music the way that i wanted to while in-game - i think it may need to be in a playlist or something along those lines. o well, i'll try after work.

Why don't you go try that on your PC then get back to Sony about that. You can't copy something while it's in use...

No i'm meaning, while watching movie "A", i would like to be able to copy movie "b" from my external hard drive or movie "C" from my PC through media server. So when movie "A" is done, it's ready to be watched!

everything went well for me...

the only thing added that i remotely care about are the trophies... and GT5 isn't supported yet, it's not even on the short list of 1st party games to adopt the trophy system according to the vblog.

still no voice chat. gotta say, i'm pissed about that.

YES!!! Finally, I'll actually play my ps3 more now. It was sooo annoying not being able to access friends messages in most games.

according to both Kotaku and Joystiq, 2.40 has been pulled off Sony's servers for now....

anyone know if there's a page with a list of the games that have or will be updated for acheivements?

Interesting, seeing as I just downloaded it about an hour ago. Maybe they just took it off after? It's really not all I was expecting. I still can't play music from the XMB like it says. I was hoping this would be a universal thing, but apparently they have to patch it AGAIN (the games) from the developer to get music to play. The preview video was extremely misleading or maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention to what the guy was saying.

i was wondering why i couldnt dl an update on either of my PS3s...glad i didnt get the update yet.

Music played has to be on the local HDD and yes, I believe games have to specifically allow it, IIRC.

heh, my friend's bricked. It came up with the finished dialog and then he restarted it but it never started back up. He's been on hold forever talking to various tech supports from all other countries, most of which speak poor english. =/ They keep telling him there's no way the firmware update could cause the playstation to stop working.

Yep, the update has definitely been pulled. You can't get it off Sony's website anymore either for manual updating.

I often wonder if they even test anything they code, lol. It's like the customers are the testers. "oh shit sir, we have a xx% brick rate, lets pull the update." :p
