Are those E8400s at 8.5 legit, because I can get an 8.5 by setting my BIOS to 8.0 and the RAM to anything other than 1:1 - if I do that CPU-Z and Everest report 8.5x - however, the responsiveness of the system feels like an 8.0x - of course that's without actually benchmarking to measure system performance, but I'm not convinced it is really faster than an 8.0. I've just assumed the -.5 multipliers were bogus register readings that CPU-Z and Everest mutually agreed to report incorrectly?

I'd give it a go with timed Prime or some such, but I'm in Germany this week and my rig is spread all over the kitchen table awaiting the next set of HSF brackets - sorry for the delay, but with the end of quarter I've been traveling a lot.

Also, anybody see anything about half-multi steps in Intel NDA errata sheets for E8400? Just curious ;)

Multi set from 9.0-->8.5-->8.0 in BIOS with all other settings unchanged. Seems to scale pretty nicely don't you think?
You need to make sure the M/B supports 1/2 multi's. I don't think changing the RAM ratio will give you the same result.

^^ Cool, Thanks for taking the time to school me. Indeed, the results scale well.

Nice OC too

As for my motherboard, I need to do a similar test and see what is actually going on when CPU-Z says 8.5.

Much too under-qualified to "school" anyone...just a noob sharing what I hope to be useful information ;)

Some 8400/3110 seem to like the 8.5 multi better - it's worth a try if you're hitting a wall with your OC.

I've got a Q807A091 coming tomorrow. Some of these can do 4.0 @ 1.20v orthos stable. Hoping it's a good clocker to get something stable above 4.2Ghz :)

im pretty sure itll go high on stock or even low voltages, the Q807s and Q808s are pretty good batches :D

Don't mind the min temp there, I reset it at some point in the middle and the screenshot was taken before it had time to cool down. Actual idle temps are 7C lower than in the screenshot. Although the only one I actually trust there is the second core. I have reseated the HSF twice since lapping it and the CPU, and the other three didn't get any lower.

I wasn't sure I was ever going to find the floor on that chip. It finally errored after 42 minutes on one core at 1.1875V set in BIOS (1.168 measured). But as you can see, one notch up from that and it runs totally stable. Next up is to see if I can hit 3.8 or 4.0. When I first started OCing I was able to get into windows and start Priming at 3.8, but BSOD or lockup followed soon after. Now that I have a really nice 24/7 setting I can work on that again.

yeah I have experienced some cpus like that, where just a tad higher will make it super stable.. my cpu is like that as well :)

You're definitely lucky w/ that Q9450 Sysjack, mine would have no hope of even POST'ing with voltage that low at that frequency. :p I guess I can't complain too much though, I can definitely attest to my setup being rock-solid since I've been running it 24/7 without any problems since I settled on my earlier reported OC. :D Perhaps the voltage on mine is a tiny bit on the high side for the CPU's longevity but if it dies after, say, 9 months, pfft, I'll just use it as an excuse to upgrade again then. ;)

The chip goes higher, but requires .05V for each 100MHz over this. It will do 3.6GHz @ 1.6v and load for an hour but I'm not benching it at that for that many hours without water. VID is 1.325.

I left it running so people could see the temperature that it tops out at on my particular cooler. Pretty hot IMO. Also SpeedStep was on, im not sure if that would be the cause for my increased voltage needs.

yeah weird it says DDR3???? sorry guys been kinda busy, updated my vid card to a xfx 9800gx2..... so with my E8500 at 4ghz, im able to get a nice 18,000+ in 3dmark06 :D will update db soon!!

vcore is high, but I'm still really stoked since this is the first machine I have OCd. I read the q9450 was a poor overclocker, but I disagree. It's a bit fussy so you have to be patient and persistent.

edit: I don't have DDR3 either, as CPU-Z reports, but Mushkin Ascent DDR2-1066. And EasyTune gets the stepping wrong, ignore it. I meant to have it on the voltages but I messed up. typical :p
