What is Diablo?

Can somebody give me a brief run down of what type of game Diablo is? I've heard of the game and even remember seeing the game box displayed at stores (the black box with what looked like the devils head on it) but never played it. Is this a MMORPG or single player? What other games are similar to this? I'm mostly into FPS but lately I've acquired new tastes. A couple non-FPS games that interest me are Fallout 3 and Kings Bounty: The Legend.

I was hoping for some first hand experiences, but I guess you're right.

By definition, the only way you get a first hand experience is by playing it yourself. Someone else's opinion relayed to you would by definition be second hand...the same perspective you'd get off the rest of the internet.

The point is, do a little research and if it looks to be your sort of thing, go pick it up and play it. You definitely won't regret it, its an awesome series and heavily influenced both the rpg and action genres.

Diablo is a top down adventure game. You complete quests and such. Kinda like WoW but there is a single player story. You can play Diablo 2 multiplayer. It is basically the single player story but with friends battling demons with you. It is addictive because you are always searching for rare weapons, they have different classes for different styles of play.

The battle chest is only $20 at wal-mart. Go pick it up if you think you might enjoy it. It may gear you up for Diablo 3!

That's probably the best idea considering some content will relate to the upcoming 3rd one.

I'm not a big fan of WOW or MMORPG of the like. They seem kinda pointless as you run around gaining XP. I need my game to have a start and end. By "end", I mean a way to know defeating my opponent means something, such as helping to conquer a capture point or some other sense of accomplishment.

I have some questions (about Diablo 3) I never played 1 or 2:

Are zones all dungeons or are there outside places like Barrens with lots of people?

Is this a MMO? or like guildwars? or neither? Whats the player cap

How do battles in single player adjust/differ when you change to 2 people or 5+ people

Is there going to be a monthly fee?

Diablo is not an mmo and will not have a monthly fee. It does have online play, but to my knowledge it has always been free and even still is not an mmo enviornment, more like co-op.

I believe some gaming sites put the game in the Action-RPG genre and for those of you not familiar with Diablo, you may be familiar with the games that took to its liking (Dungeon Siege 1 & 2, Titan Quest, etc.) which have been refer to as clones.

The original Diablo took place in 1 city and the rest took place under the local citidal. There were 3 types of dungeon, a classic stone walled type, a mine style, then hell. Diablo 2 took place in a combination of outdoor areas and dungeons. There were 3 acts, a jungle, a desert and hell again. In each 'act', there was a very large 'world' area to explore and the smaller sub-dungeons were attached to that. There were way points you could access to move around the world since it got pretty big as you opened it all up. All 3 games are completely randomly generated 'world' but Diablo 3 will also inclue randomly generated quest as well. It's basically a new game each time you play it. In DIablo 1 and 2, the only NPC's you meet are in the local cities, of course with the exception of those related to quest that are in the world. As for Diablo 3, we don't know yet if NPC's will be out and about.

Someone said it's "kinda like WoW". It's nothing like WoW. WoW wasn't even a twinkle in their eyes when they made Diablo. It's a 3/4 overhead view mouse button masher. You level up your character, increase his/her stats and collect loot. There are quest and good story telling/voice overs.

Is there going to be a monthly fee?
No, it's not a MMOG. If you choose to play it online with friends, you play over Blizzards battle.net service which is free.

The online play in Diablo is through Blizzard's Battle.net and consists of hundreds of player hosted games that can hold a maximum of 8 players. When you connect to it, you see a lobby chat screen on the left with several channels, many of which are trading-oriented, and a game selection list on the right. Games that are available to join generally have titles describing what is going on in them, like "act 5 hell" or "trading post" or "free stuff".

You basically play through the 5 acts of the game on the 3 difficulty levels, each playthrough unlocking the next level (normal, nightmare and hell). Each playthrough is of the same game, just on a considerably harder difficulty level that makes it unique from the previous playthrough. Each character you create and use goes through this natural progression. The maximum level is 99 and it takes a while to get there. It is a game with a significant amount of powerleveling and has been plagued by hacked and duplicated items in the past. It is almost entirely about the gear for veteran players, and the item system is much different from WoW. For instance, there is no soulbinding; all gear can be used and then traded at any time.

This is all from memory and I haven't played the game in probably 5 years, so I may have a few things wrong here.

if you are familiar with dungeon siege, its similiar to that type of game, worth picking it up

I'll sum up the game play for you:

clickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclick*carpal tunnel*

With that said I spent years on Diablo 2 and loved every minute of it. I can't even look at the game case without wanting to reinstall it and lose a week.

just go buy it
most people seem to enjoy it so chances are you will like it
of course you will be stepping back in time with the graphics but many people still play the game today

Single player RPG overhead view with an Online Co-Op / PVP mode... but your character on that server IS static. Game difficulty scales by number of people in the game. You also go through 3 difficulty levels of the same game doing the same quests over but much harder.

Online play is about 80% about gear, 20% about build.
PvP is about 60% gear 40% skill... depending on class. Some are more gear based.

Ever see or play Titan Quest? It's very much like a modern Diablo.

This is all from memory and I played the game last night.

Fixed

;)

Actually I think it is more than $20, but it would still be worth it if it cost $50.

the graphics look pretty bad. maybe I'll just wait for #3 to come out. when does it come out like end of next year?

You kill monsters. By doing so you gain experience and gear that will help you kill bigger, stronger monsters later on. When you achieve the highest level and best gear, you start a new character and do it over again. It's really very boring and pointless.

haha...that hilarious....whoo! good one.

If Half Life had never existed, Diablo may have been the number one game of all time...

Clever, I LOLed!!

However, IIRC, the left side of the screen had a channel list, the right side of the screen had a list of the people in the current channel, and the "Join" button on the bottom took you to a different screen where one could select from the current games or create a new one. Again, however, that is from memory and it has been a while since I played. Also, you forgot the KSoH. :p

What did you fix?

Read it again. ;)

.

Saying it's nothing like wow, then describing it that way...EXACTLY like wow, is a bit contradictory.

Why did he highlight Diablo though?

Sigh......

The OP said DIABLO was like this: and then proceeded to describe how DIABLO 2 was. The person that corrected him highlighted DIABLO, and then changed the paragraph to relate to how DIABLO 1 played, since that is what the OP actually typed.

I was just guessing but I did a search and

Release Date: 09/30/2009

Blizzard has not given a release date beyond "when it's done."

NOTE: Blizzard always says something is done "when it's done."

I'd wager that the game won't be out at least until 2010. Any release date that you see is pure speculation.

A good rule of thumb for blizzard releases is to take the latest reasonable date you can think of and add six months to one year.
