PlayStation 3 owners will finally be able to access the XMB in-game now, listen to custom in-game soundtracks and the new achievement system. The update is due out on the 2nd of July. Here is a video that walks you through the in-game XMB feature.

so they are basically just creating their own version of xbox live?

not that i'm complaining, as i own both systems. But essentially they are just finally getting on the ball

i don't understand why 1/2 of this wasnt already implemented from the get go. Of course people want to chat with other folks while in game. duh.
I wish they would update ps2/ps1 game compatibility for those of us with the 80gig. I really want my copy of Tekken Tag to work on the machine.

i hear that. I had to go through the extra trouble of tracking down a 60 gig because i primarily am still rooted in the ps1 rpgs

Nice, now if only there would actually be some more games I want to buy for my PSBlu-ray player. I picked up the 60gb model before they went extinct, but I've only actually bought one game for it. I've downloaded a lot of demos from the PS network, but have not found any games I'd actually want to shell out $60 for.

Oh well, FFXIII will be out eventually and until then I've got a very nice movie player.

for some reason, this gives me that feeling thats makes it seem like sony implemented these features as it was original, but then again i might just be paranoid

finally, geez, ive been waiting forever for this. looks like it kicks ass tho, and its the full XMB and not a watered-down version. Thats good.

Wow sony that rocks. We get full XMB like xbox live functionality yet we don't have to shell out 50 bucks a year for it!

Funny Xboxe Live Silver is free, and didn't have to wait for it. (please no BS about 360 coming out first, they both were in development the same amount of time, PS3 got delayed due to BR issues).

I'm waiting for the day when I can buy a PS3 game and not feel like I have made a $60 mistake. Glad to see new features, still waiting on pshome...

1.) Live Silver doesn't let you play online with other players *at all*. Something that's been free since the invention of the computer. Also, Silver members get newly released content a week later than Gold members.

2.) The 360 was rushed out the door to get a jump in the next gen game, which was both a success and a failure. Its why we have the RRoD and tons of disc tray issues. But it also put the install base way ahead of the PS3. which continues to pay dividends.

Given the vast difference in the quality of the hardware in the 360 vs the PS3, I'd say waiting a bit on the PS3 was a good idea. Of course, it turns out marketing can completely change people's perceptions of a product, even when they have to return the thing to be repaired multiple times.

I'm really happy to see the in-game XMB. It brings the PS3 just about on par with the 360 as far as online features, and has some distinct advantages elsewhere. This is good for 360 owners, since it'll push Microsoft to stop just sitting on their laurels and start trying to compete.

Disclaimer: I'm biased.

Before you PS3 fans get all giddy about in-game XMB and think that somehow PS3 matches Xbox 360 in that functionality, keep in mind the following:

- There is still no crossgame invites or matchmaking on PS3, while there is on LIVE with Xbox 360
- Private chat on PS3 does not work crossgame, while it does on LIVE with Xbox 360
- Custom soundtracks are supported on a game-by-game basis on PS3, its up to the developer to provide that support, unlike Xbox 360 where they are universally supported
- Trophies are supported on a game-by-game basis, unlike Xbox 360 where all titles support achievements

They still have a lot more copying to do before they even get close to matching the functionality of LIVE on Xbox 360.

About bloody time, freaking slackers

It will be nice though can finally select music from the xmb while playing games like GT5 Prologue (man whoever selected the music for GT5 Prologue must be like 80 years old)

That's not correct. LIVE periodically hosts Free Gold weekends that allow all Silver Users to play multiplayer (though sometimes restricted to Silver users in a specific region) and 48-hour Gold Trial cards are handed out like candy from places like Burger King, and Dominos Pizza, and are packed in with a bunch of games.

You have to remember that LIVE doesn't just throw random people into a game to play together, there is matchmaking that goes on which takes into account network latency, language of players, relative skill of players, etc. There is a lot going on behind the scenes to ensure that you are matched up with players who should have a low latency to you, speak your language, and are roughly the same skill level as you. What you describe for PC gaming isn't even close to that. With PC online gaming you get a list of servers, hopefully sorted by ping time, hopefully with people playing on them, and you decide which to join. How many times have you picked a bad server, or spent a long time trying to find a good server? LIVE does that legwork for you, in addition to maintaining the leaderboards for each title. There is a lot more to LIVE multiplayer than PC multiplayer. Yes, some PC games have some of this functionality. And yes, some PC gaming services like Steam have this functionality. But on LIVE it is seamless and exists for all games on the service.

Actually I was wrong, Xbox live has nothing to do with this. Achievements and custom soundtracks, and in-game access to system features can be done WITHOUT any LIVE at all. This was a day one feature.

Wonder how much longer Microsoft can continue to actually charge money ($50 bucks) for its Gold Service?

Hilarious.

PS3 needs it, but still, gaming on the ps3 is a shitty experience compared to the 360, given the circumstances.

You dont care about noise
you dont care about multimedia machine.
You dont care about Physical looks.

If you dont care about non of those, You own a 360.

If you like to game, watching movies, internet and all that one a single small machine, go the PS3.

Graphics looks better on the 360, the fps is greater. the noise is bigger, it looks crappy, and so on :D

I own the 360, due to price, and graphics.

I use a computer FOR ALL games except exclusives. GH3 and alike :)
A pc proves a better gaming platform for me, with the 360 controller(which is daamn slick to use :) ).

PS3 is a daaamn nice blueray player tho ;D

am i reading this correctly? you need a 60gb to play backwards compatable games? 20gb, 40gb, 80gb wont work? what the fuck is sony thinking? cant be a hardware limitation, they are all the same inside, right?

The 20gb/60gb has hardware emulation
The 80gb has software emulation (less compatible) - Personally I haven't had any issues with PS2 games

The 40gb has no emulation at all to cut costs. It also removed the media readers and two USB slots.

All PS3's can play all PS1 titles.

great that these features are coming out. hopefully the ingame soundtracks wont be a annoying factor for online gameplay on games such as cod4 (using mic that is)

The PS3 is so weird. On the one hand it has awesome media center and streaming capabilities, I much prefer it for that than my 360. Blu Ray movies obviously look stellar on it. On the other hand, the 360 has it beat hands down with matchmaking and community features. I really hope they continue to step this up (oh yeah, and more exclusive games on top of the already awesome MGS4 :) )

Do any of you guys program? Sony started their network almost from scratch. It takes a while.

And even I don't really care too much about any of this stuff. But good for those who wanted it. I put in game, I play. I take out game, I put in movie, I watch. That's about it for me.

There are things the Ps3 can do that the 360 can't. Those programmers have a ton of things to work on, including home (another thing I won't care too much about). Didn't MS just announce they are going to do something similar, with avatars or something or another?

You copy, and you innovate on that copying. That's what competitors do.

.:raise eyebrow:.

the 360 plays movies just fine.. game out, movie in, hit play.. infact if you have a VistaMedia Center i would almost argue the Xbox360 has more media capabilities than the PS3. (Which then turns your Xbox360 into a complete Media [TV, Music, Photos, DVDs])

the bottom line is, excuse and vaporware don't cut it for the $$$..

i mean look at PSHome.. its the cycle of vaporware promises..

just wait another quarter.. we'll have it then.. buy a ps3 now, we'll add some nice features later..

it only takes a person once to fall into that and they will never do it again. Innovation is nice, but if you never actuall Innovate anything.. then its all just vaporware.

Eh, who was talking bout the 360 with the movie part. I was talking about not really caring (personally) about all these features. Technically the 360 doesn't really play movies just fine. First, no bluray. That was easy. Second, the DVD playback on the 360 is not good (some might say, Sucks). But that's besides the point, I wasn't talking about the 360 there.

PSHOME, like I said, don't care. If it never comes out, fine with me. I play games. Insert game, play. Get it? And you point out one thing, I can point another. Both consoles have their pluses and minuses. Took them a year to fix the migration of downloaded content from one console to another. Something Sony had from the getgo (up to five downloads). That would seem like an easy fix, much easier than PS Home.

Like I said, both have pluses, both have minuses, both have games. I didn't even mention RROD ... that's another thread.
