Dell 2408WFP Now Available

Which is the best route so far, get a G2400WD, a 2407 or wait for the 2408 A1? I mean I can wait, my CRT is still going strong after 6 years atleast, but it's 19" and my 8800gts are kind of bored right now, though how are FPS games on the Dell monitors, any problems with them? Once they fix the lag issues on the 2408 I mean.

I doubt the A01 will fix the many problems the A00 has...

It has to fix problems, otherwise it won't be a revision. It will be just...a re-release I guess.

At least I hope they fix the problems ;\

Looks like then Dell is off the list to look at, I don't remember going through this much trouble for a monitor when everyone was running CRT's.

Just to let anyone know, the monitor is 200 dollars off the 699 price for today only! Not sure if that's only in Canada or not though.

Yeah, it's Canada only, just checked. I was gonna buy too based on the Dell rep's comments about easy exchange once new revisions come out.

Do what I did and go with the V2400W - although I'm just talking out of my ass, as I don't even have it yet, so can't really say how great it is. Although for some weird reason, I feel relief finally, after having made a decision. The A01 will have a ton of problems to fix according to this thread. Maybe A02 will be a complete fix or if Dell is really good, everything will be fixed in A01, even the uneveness of the screen colors.

I'm confused... suddenly everyone is talking about Rev A02... what happened to Rev A01?

There were rumors of a Rev A01 in China or Singapore or Denmark something, but there has never been any concrete evidence of it other than "my friend saw it" and other blah. No pictures, no confirmation from Dell, etc.

As far as official word from Dell goes, the next revision is A01 and comes in mid-July.

On a side note, since my post is now buried umpteen pages back, I just want to re-state that I have this monitor, it has no problems (even backlighting, no pink or green tint, etc.), and I love it.

I think 90% of the 2408WFP's have the green tint problem... Can you see any green tinting on these pictures?

I don't know what percentage of 2408WFPs have tinting problems, just that it would seem high from internet reports, but mine doesn't, and usually the people who take the time to post anything at all are the ones having problems so, I couldn't say.

In those images, for the first two I see what could appear to be a green tint in the right and lower right 1/3 of the images, but in the 3rd it looks even to me except for perhaps an overall green palour. That might be the color choice of the movies, take The Matrix for instance. Movie stills are not very good for this task. Generally the best way to display tinting problems is to do so on a white screen, that obviously should be purely white. There are some very good examples of the tint problem posted on the Dell community forums using that method.

You can see some pics of my monitors here:

http://www.radiantcg.com/temp/MonitorCompare/SideBySide.jpg
http://www.radiantcg.com/temp/MonitorCompare/SideBySideClose.jpg

I don't have any white background pictures, and those were taken mainly to compare the physical size of the monitor panels. You won't see any uneven color tinting there because there are none on my screen (2408WFP is on the right).

I ordered mine a week ago today with expectations of it getting here on the 23rd. Now they're telling me that they need to delay my ship date, and will inform me on a later date with details on when they can ship it >.>

Who knows, maybe I'll get one of the mysterious A01's when they actually decide to ship it.

Just order my with Dell, I will update with which version I get.

Got it for $575.04

Ordered mine on the 13th .. got it the 16th .. it's A00. No A01 until mid July.

Anyone know how to make this thing look good for both games and on the desktop? I can't get the text as crisp as my 2005FPW (S-IPS panel). If I get it looking decent in my games it's bad on the desktop and vice versa.

I'd love to hear some settings to try before I lose my mind. I'm considering trying the Samsung 245BW. Makes me really appreciate the S-IPS on the 2005FPW.

My guess as to why you cant get the text as clear is because the pixel pitch is higher than on the 20". Just my guess though.

I hear you on the 2005FPW. I own two of them and have been dying to get a larger 24" monitor but can not find anything that matches its quality. I tried the 245BW and did not like it, TN may be faster but the colors and horrible viewing angles (if if you are only viewing SLIGHTLY off angle) kill it for me.

I tried working with Dell support to fix my issues but no luck. They basically told me to send the monitor back for a refund. I've already hopped on the Doublesight bandwagon and hope that it's as good of a monitor as the NewEgg reviews and the thread here indicate.

Update on the A01 (now A00...):

Due to a Dell internal process change many of the 2408's that will ship new with the revised firmware will have a different part number and not a different revision number. The only way you will be able to tell if it's the revised firmware is to check the sharpness setting, if the setting is in multiples of 10 then it is the revised firmware if it's in multiples of 25 then it's not. The part number has nothing to do with the revision but someone decided since we are changing the part number anyway the firmware will be A00 on that part number. I thought it was kind of confusing but it's not my idea

I will post here when I have a firm date that the new firmware is shipping

That monitor is the E248WFP which is not the same as the UltraSharp 2408WFP.

The E248WFP is a TN panel and speaking from experience of having two of them (one I sold), I would not buy one because you can get better TN panels for the same price or cheaper.

As I said, I got rid of one of them and I may get rid of the second one and go with another L2410NM from Westinghouse. I have only had only problem with that monitor so far which is a pink/green flickering but I think it may be due to a faulty cable. It rarely happens so it's not that big of an annoyance anyways considering how much I spent on it.

Woops i put the wrong link, it should be this.

I'd not bother with it if you're gaming. I'm not sure what you're budget is but I went for the DoubleSight 263N. It's couple hundred more, but worth it IMO (even without the polarizer). There's a new model due out in the near future as well, the 265W. I considered the Samsung 245BW but went with another IPS. I checked out the 245BW at the local Circuit City and it didn't seem too bad though for a TN panel. I used the 2408WFP for about a week and never really got it to my liking.

I received mine the other day and I haven't seen any of the reported problems. No backlight bleed, no noticeable input lag, and no dead pixels. The only problem that I had with it was that the reds were too saturated with the factory settings but that was fairly easily resolved.

Also tried out my ps3 on it and that looks great too.

No input lag? BS....

I bought a Dell monitors in the past (2005FPW, 2407WFP & 2407WFP-HC) and all early revision of the 24" monitors suffered from significant issues (banding, text fuzziness, scaling problems, dark ghosting, etc...).
And here we go again with the 2408WFP...

No input lag? BS....

Definitely agree. The 2408 has been shown to be the laggiest one of them all. Honestly, nearly 4 frames of input lag - and here I thought my 3 frames with the 2405 was bad.

I am using a 2407wfp (NON HC). Should I stay with this or return it and get a replacement 2408? You guys think its worth it?
I still have warranty. The thing that's always bugged me is having the left side be a little brighter than the right. I know backlight's are rarely ever 100% even but still, I do have warranty in effect. Thing I worry about is the input lag. The input lag on my 2407 is tolerable but I've read it's worse on the 2408 and thats not something I want MORE of. Btw my rev is A04 and everything else is fine about the panel.

There's no BS about his statement. There is a measurable input lag on this (or any) monitor, and the 2408's is indeed higher than just about any other monitor on the market. However, he didn't say there was no input lag, he said there was no noticeable input lag. On that I'd agree with him. I don't notice it at all. Everyone has a different sensitivity to it. He doesn't notice it, I don't notice it, many others don't notice it. You, Lobski, and many others do notice it.

I game on this monitor every day, and love it (great picture, great colors after calibration, no ghosting, no noticeable input lag). Your own mileage may differ, but it's not like either he or myself are sitting here lying to you.

If I recall correctly, the 2407's (non-HC of course) remain the fastest 24" VA panels released by Dell. The 2405, 2407HC, and 2408 all have more input lag. As for the brightness inconsistency - I think you are finally noticing the VA gamma shift :(

[H]ardforums, in particular, exposes VA panels.

In for 1 ($597.43 shipped to SF). Got a hold of a 20%-off coupon; couldn't resist any longer. My Samsung is going back to Costco =)

I hope that firmware update comes out soon if the monitor ain't new. Is there a way for Dell to hold shipment till new ones are confirmed, or is it all automated? That, and other points to check for w/ this monitor (i.e. dead pixels, backlight)? TIA

Guess it won't hurt to get it. I'll update w/ my findings.

There might be some on eBay but Dell SB sent an email as well. HTH GL

Good points and yes you are probably right. I think that is partly to do with gamma shift. Well the panel is very nice still and so I will hang on to it for a while longer since theres nothing wrong with it. I game on it every day its been awesome. ;)

I'm debating between this monitor and an HDTV as the centrepiece in my new work/play setup. I will have:

1 Dell Latitude D620 Laptop
1 MId-high end gaming PC
1 Xbox360
1 Digital Cable receiver
1 PC 5.1 surround sound speaker system

According to what I've read, this monitor supports 1:1 pixel mapping, which means I"ll get a near-perfect picture on my 360 using 1080p (my system has an HDMI output). My major concern is with aspect-ratio scaling and non-native resolution picture quality. I want to hook up that digital reciever (non-HD) through the S-video port on the monitor. I want to be able to have a square image that doesn't look too blurry from using a non-native resolution.

If I opt for a TV, I will use the TV as a monitor on my PC for gaming purposes only. The rest of the time, I will be using a 19inch CRT monitor (which I currently use for my 360). The major advantage for me is that this monitor plus a cable box is still cheaper than a "quality" 26inch TV from Samsung which doesn't support as high a resolution, but on the plus side would be better for TV signals.

Does anybody have any experience with using this monitor as a television?

I got mine Saturday, very happy with it. Mine is apparently the first revision, sharpness increments by 25. The input lag does exist, but I wouldn't know that if I hadn't used the lagom response time test. I just don't notice it with my naked eye. I've got a couple complaints.. the left edge is brighter than the rest of the screen, but that's only really noticeable on certain shades of gray. The scaling quality is not the greatest, I'll be sticking with native resolution and 1:1 mode I guess.

Just got mine today. Got it up and calibrated via my friend's i1. Seems that the sharpness is in increments of 25 so its the 1st batch (unfortunately). I didn't notice any lag while playing COD4 and GRID (coming from my Samsung TN 2ms). No dead pixels fortunately. I have to do a test for backlight still; nothing noticeable at first sight.

One thing though, after calibrating using i1, white seems a bit red(?) I guess I'm not used to it yet. I hope that firmware comes out soon if enough--that'll be awesome to add to this nice LCD.

PS. Samsung is definitely going back to Costco for random pixel-flickering. Weirdness indeed.
