what 24incher with glossy screen do you recommend? obviously no CRT..i'm looking for a stylish 24 inch lcd that will serve me well for general web surfing, coding, office work, and occasional gaming (HL2, Guild Wars).

now i don't want any matte screen. know it reduces glare and whatnot but since this will be used indoor glare doesn't bother me. what i'd like is the superior contrast that glossy screens offer.

what do you recommend?

budget is less than $600

Go check them both out at Best Buy, they have both of them. I didn't like the Gateway but it may be personal preference. After seeing someones blow up internally on another forum I was kinda put off. lol. Warranty is the same though, I'd check with Gateway's dead pixel policy.

I honestly dont know about the HP's, but my FHD2400 is fantastic. The only issue I've had with it, is on Gears Of War... the dark maps get a little washed out, but thats more of an LCD issue than anything else... i.e. blacks are pushed up to grey by the backlight - only an issue cause the whole screen is dark. Only noticeable because almost the whole screen is black...

seriously though, this display is prime. Clear, crisp, no dead pixels, hardly any backlight bleed, and excellent response time. The viewing angle is a problem if you are away from the computer, though it's not terrible. Due to the LCD tech you need to see it head on or you will experience *some* color/luminosity distortion. But it isn't an issue if you're sitting at your PC - only a problem if you are across the room watching a DVD or something.

Do not take any comparison between screens at Best Buy...ESPECIALLY 24" screens. They have them all running a low resolution on a video splitter and everyone plays with the settings. Best Buy still has the 100% return policy so buy two you want to try out and give it a go for 14 days.

I researched for about two months before finally deciding on the FHD2400. It's a Samsung panel with extremely nice electronics behind it. Inputs galore and surprisingly good software. The PiP function is actually useful since you can drag it around in Windows without using the menu, same with color settings. The image it produces is unbelieveable after you get it setup properly. As long as the glare doesn't bother you (about as bad as old school CRTs but only in black scenes/pictures), you can't go wrong with the FHD2400.

Circuit City has the FHD2400 on close out for $449 - $40 printable coupon. I ended up at $431 after taxes and all.

I think this must depend on the Best Buy, because the 24" HP's at every BB I've gone to were hooked up to computers. Along with the 24" Gateway. Possibly because they sell them with the HP/Gateway computers :). So that is a good thing. I didn't think to go web surfing on them, but yes, please be sure to do so. The blacks on these aren't so good. I fiddled with the HP today at NFM, the black on this site shows up as gray, the gray shows up as a very tan/brown tone. Hope that helps, go play with these to be sure it is tolerable for you. ;)

lol, I left Hard Forum open too on the ones I fiddled with. :D

I had the associates at Circuit City hook one directly to a PC to play with it because every store in NE Atlanta uses display switches. I didn't like the HP 24" model at all. If you go back, set the gateway to something generic like Movie or Picture mode then take a look see again. I've definately had no issues with blacks on the FHD2400.

Any TN panel is great for gaming. They all have the same effective response time on the panel itself but some do suffer from input lag on cheap brands.

Thanks to yeorwned! I got the FHD2400 at CC for $429.00 less the $40.00 coupon; so, $389.00 plus tax in the DC area. A few left in the DC metro area that I could see, when they were using the CC system to find one in stock. Would've missed this if it hadn't been for your posting. Was going to get the BenQ V2400; but I always liked glossy screens. And at this price I couldn't resist.

Thanks,
Jean-Claude

Where are you seeing this price on the gateway? I looked at Circuit City website and didn't see it listed.

Have to go in-store: the local rep, will check the net listing first; then you have to have him check store inventories- then they'll pop up. Not a lot of store's have them in stock- Springfield Va.; Wheaton, Md, has 2 plus an open box; Rockville, Md has one left. That's of the store's the rep I was with, checked. I'm sure there are more stores; just no concise listing of 'in-stock' at all stores in an entire region, as one see's at BB.

Good luck.

My pleasure! I was looking at the back BenQ 24" but $399 is the MSRP so you're paying full price for a generic Acer monitor. For the same price, you end up getting the superior Gateway model having 5x the inputs, a samsung panel, vibrant colors like no other model, no backlight bleed if you get a recent model, and superior electronics + software. Definitely made the decision much easier and after having used it for a week, old games look brand new. Most satisfying upgrade ever.

They are not on the web site because they are on close out. You can see they used to be on the CC website but no more. Just call the store and ask if they have any 24" gateway monitors in stock. They will know what you are talking about and if they don't have any, they can search other stores inventory to see who does have it. The 800 number can't search store inventory.

There is also a speaker bar you can attach to this model if you're into that but the quality of sound is poor. Only for generic Windows usage.
