I have seen many people push the tray in physically, I personally prefer to just push the button again, I thought for fun, just how do most people close their optical drive tray.

Do you push the open button again
or
Do you push the tray in

edit: I posted in the wrong place, I thought this was general Hardware, i miss read "software" to "hardware", could a mod move it to general hardware if this was an inappropriate place.

I always push the button again. I just can't bring myself to push the tray in because I feel like it is forcing or breaking something.

I've always just pushed the tray.... some times violently due to anger... I've yet to break a cd rom as a result of doing so

Obviously the drive manufacturers are OK with this since they all close the tray when you start to push on it.

I don't think you can hurt anything by pushing the tray. It's just a row of teeth on the bottom of the tray and a motor. When you press the tray, the motor senses that and spins the motor to finish closing the tray. Just don't be an animal and push too hard... just a simple touch will do.

It's built to do it... it's fine.

most of the time I try and remember to push the button to close it, but i also ofter just push the tray till it starts to close on its own.

I use to always press the button, but over the years and especially that my PC is now on the floor... I just push the tray.

I always push the button. I don't feel like opening up the chance to break my shit when I can just as easily avoid it. That's just me though....lol.

When doing certain duplication activities the shell script closes it for me automatically, other times I just push the tray.

Voted that I pushed the tray, but I do either that or button. It doesn't really matter.

On my DVD Burner i press the button but on my older pos drives i push the drive in or force them if im mad.

Push the tray usually. Have to on my laptops and on desktops its just easier.

On my current desktop with stealth bays I have to push the button to close though as the cover is a bit flimsy to push on to close the tray (just held with velcro).

Push the button, i think if you push the tray sooner or later the eject mechanism will suffer damage :(

Macbook Air user?

Nope, I have two desktops and one laptop. None of them has an optical drive; I just don't find myself using one. I do have one in a box somewhere just in case I do need one, but it's been in said box since I installed the OS on my primary desktop.

I take it you just download everything you need to install then?

I think that's a bunch of B.S. And I'm not saying this to single you out--others mentioned it as well. Unless you're ramming in the tray to close it, the drive should NOT wear out.

I use Linux, so yes. When I realize I need to do foo, "apt-get install foo" usually does the trick. Combine that with Steam for games and I mostly don't need CDs.

yeah I couldn't do things like that. I like watching movies and burning cds too often for that to be allowed. MP3 cds for the car are important.

Drives are made to be closed by pushing the tray people. That is why they sense it if you just lightly tap the drive tray.

You dont force it closed, you just give it a light bump and it does the work.

I push the door to close it. A swift reach and tap is all it takes.. no need to fumble around feeling for the button under my desk.

I usually press it gently in, but something tells me this can't be good for the components inside. :D

It can't be that bad... or else drive manufacturers wouldn't let you do it!

When you push the button it tells the motor to close the tray. When you push the tray, the motor senses that and closes the tray too. Both are acceptable ways to close the tray.

Not saying it's bad or not, just making a comment on that manufacturing decision to retract IF it's bad.
If it's bad to push it to close, it would be worse to not let you do it because you will break it even faster.
Think of it this way, someone push a needle to your arm, it is bad, do you let your arm retract or let it stay there. you will get hurt much less to retract your arm than to stay still.

I push the tray, the little door on the drive blocks the button when it's open. And come on, the only thing to the eject mechansim is a row of teeth and a small gear. It's not going to wear out fast by tapping the tray versus the motor kicking on and doing the initial tap for you.
