If I turn off DDL I get no sound at all...no windows sounds, no mp3s...nothing. I'd like to be able to turn it off sometimes...

Config:

Auzentech X-Fi Prelude -> Optical Cable -> Onkyo TX-SR605 AV Receiver -> 5 speakers, 1 sub

Vista Ultimate x64

Turning off DDL turns off the digital/optical output.
Why do you need to turn it off?

dunno, wanted to see what it would do...and i swore it worked yesterday...

Disabling DDL will disable sending an encoded signal through the optical unless you're watching a DDL or DTS source.

Ah, actually, it should still work but send a PCM stereo signal through the line for all sources except pre-encoded ones.

Could be an issue with the X-Fi drivers in Vista. That wouldn't be too surprising, all things considered. Auzentech's drivers aren't all that different from Creative's, as I understand it.

You might have the same issue as milkweg, whose digital output isn't working at all under Vista:
