Have you ever played a game where you were a 100% into it, where you were so concentrated and absorbed that you were actually sweating? A game which you could truly call astonishing without the slightest hesitation?

For me it has to be GTR2 with STALKER coming second...

A lot actually. Usually its a couple per year.
2007-08 so far Crysis, I think Mass Effect will as well.
2006-07 was Oblivion
2005-06 was WoW (curse you WoW)
2005 Far Cry, HL2
2003-05 Rainbow Six Raven Shield, KOTOR, Jedi Knight 2
2001-02 Ghost Recon, Max Payne
etc

For me,

1st FF7 - Going against the special boss: Emerald and Ruby

2nd Gran Tourism - Get the License in A and S Class

3rd Playstation System- System Freeze.

Oblivion (played all the way through 6 times now), KOTOR (+ II, which a lot of people didn't like), All Gran Turismo Games, Need for Speed - up to Porsche Unleashed, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Forza 2 (got pretty decent with the livery, made showing off fun), Far Cry (Crysis was fun, but I've played Far Cry through at least 10 times), The Witcher, Fable, the entire GTA series (I started with the original, on PC)...I'm sure there's many others

Both Star Wars KoToR games. CoD4, All of Half Life series. Jade Empire and hoping that Mass Effect will be.

I have the ability (if you can call it that) to become obsessed with a single game for anywhere from one to about four weeks at a time. In the last seven months alone, I've devoted probably unhealthy concentrations of time to Halo 3, Beautiful Katamari, Guitar Hero II, and BioShock.

Unfortunately, I got tendinitis from attempting "Free Bird" over and over in Guitar Hero II, so, since then, I've had to cut back a bit on gaming for a while.

That's for the concentrated/absorbed part. As for pure astonishment, Crysis has to be up there. But that seemed to have come near the end of my "FPS interest" phase; I'll have to actually finish the game once my attention returns to FPSes.

Rfactor with the sprint car addon by SBS

cod4 would be 1st but those stupid airstrikes and helicopters just ruin the game for me.

Deus Ex , Interstate 76 and System Shock 2 were probably at the top for immersion,

Max Payne 2, the First KoToR, Grim Fandango are a close 2nd..

granted there have been plenty of good games, but for actual immersion it seems RPG / Adventure-esk type games seem to have a much more of an immersion factor.. just because by their very design they are trying for it. You just seem to make much more of a connection with the game when you are playing a much larger role in its outcome (or pseudo outcome)

the Half life series, while good, was a little superficial for me immersion wise.. Great story

Does it count as immersion if your sense of time seems to fade away while playing a game (e.g. look at clock @ 3:00 PM, then look again @ 11:58 PM)?

Yeah, I've had that happen to me in:
Simcity 2000 / 4
Simcopter
Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 and 2
NFS:pU
Forza 2
Portal and Portal with the flash map pack

One of the last games that had me so hooked, I actually dreamed I was one of the little villagers in Age of Empires II. I remember the other army had just broke thru the wall I just built and I had to run. Sometimes while at work, all I could think about was how I could make "x" amount of this troop and that one quicker than the other guy....How to gather more resources faster....do I spawn 12 villagers or 15 then build "x" or should I...........the list went on and on and on. I could NOT get this game out of my head and HAD to play it with any time I had in front of the computer.

Oh oh oh...and Mechwarrior 4 (which my [H] name comes from). I was very into this game too. I would download the various maps and screenshot them then put them into paintshop and draw up plans of attack for the clan I was in. Ahhh, good times good time good times......

That sounds like it was real for you! :p

I was sucked into COD2 for over 1000hrs online, playing S&D with a tactical clan was awesome. I also put a couple hundred hours into Oblivion and the original Gothic.

Funny thing is now that I've been rocking out on Rock Band for a while, whenever I listen to any song on the radio or on my Ipod I think of how it would be played on RB. Ha

A game that gets me uber sweaty is rock band drums on expert. Prob cuz the intro to foreplay u gotta hit so many notes and its mad intense. And i get mad into it.

For me its Oblivion and Mass Effect. The atmosphere in those games were so deep, I was immersived heavily in those games.

Deus Ex.

PCGamer went so far as to say that it spawned a new genre; the "Immersive Simulation."

That easter egg maze game on my old Sega Master System. ;)

Or maybe, System Shock 2, Thief 2, EverQuest.

Oblivion, Deus Ex and now Mass Effect. Walking around parts of the Citadel in ME such as Chora's Den and the Wards reminded me of sections of Deus Ex, particularly the Hong Kong areas.

Total Annihilation
Original Resident Evil.
FF7
Total Annihilation

FF7
Total Annihilation

Total Annhilation - Metal Map. I can't even count the number of days wasted at my condo 10 years ago, the quantity of beer consumed, or the number of Brawlers my best friend could produce. He had so many, it lagged everyone's system when he deployed them.

It was like the line from 300: "Our arrows will blot out the Sun!"

Thief: The Dark Project
Thief 2: The Metal Age
System Shock 2
Operation Flashpoint
Oblivion

I class immersion as being so drawn in by the game world that it seems more real than the real world. In the last few years only those few games have really sucked me in. Made me feel like i was there, in the game world. Mass Effect was awesome but i never felt part of the game. Only first person games draw me in and replace my reality.

I would have to say Diablo II. I spent hundreds of hours in that damn cow level leveling up my characters to 99.
Also Grand Theft Auto III. I was absolutely blown away by the huge open environments the first time I played it.

Fallout series, spent countless high school time configuring my character...YES I WAT A HS STUDENT back then, hahaha.

Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind for me. I simply loved the story and I was completely in character with the whole Nerevarine thing. Great Stuff! Oblivion was good in that regard too, but not nearly as good as Morrowind.

STALKER was definitely the most recent and immersive experience for me. Can't wait for Clear Sky.

As for more traditional FPSs, I think FEAR and AvP2 were some of the best, in terms of immersive experience. I also liked the way we were told the Doom 3 story. I read almost every e-mail and saw every video on the PDA.

For me it was:
- Max Payne I and II (great storyline) 2001, 2005
- Command and Conquer 3 -2008
- Starcraft I (2001-ish)

Doom 3 freaked me out (with those spiders). Crysis put me in awe and was the reason i bought a GT. The second half of the game was a bit ridiculous though, but the first half...that beautiful island...made the game what it is.

How could you guys stand stalker? I found it buggy and the enemies are too 'smart' :)
Oblivion is a very nice game but i can't get into it. I found it took a long time to build the character. Maybe i need more patience and need to spend more time on it.

Nah STALKER is amazing, just not everyones cup of tea! :D

Doom 3. It scared the crap out of me to have to run around with a flashlight in my hand instead of a gun!
