Jeez -- Do all monitors buzz?

OK, I must have dog hearing or something. But I am hearing it.

I literally just bought today an HP w2207H to replace my current monitor (see this thread: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1306178) because my current monitor was buzzing if the brightness is set below 100%.

Guess what, the HP does the same thing!

This has to be normal and I have to live with it right? Put on my headphones all the time or something.

What is going on?

Thanks.

Definitely not normal, I'd exchange it or try another monitor.

I had an HP w2007 for a few days, it made a funny noise as well.

I've heard of Samsung monitors doing it as well, in fact it's almost always Samsung monitors I hear complaints about "buzzing" noises when brightness is adjusted.

Thanks for the reply. So far I have had 4 external monitors (3 LGs and now this HP, and all have buzzed). That is just nuts.

Maybe I should just go ahead and get the Apple Cinema Display -- unless they buzz too. Ugh.

I'm using an LG L227WTG at the moment, brightness is turned down and no buzzing.

I've only had buzzing once, but many other problems with TN panels (dithering issues, washed out colours, etc.).

It took me 8 tries (this is my 8th monitor) to get it right finally.

I know how you feel about now. I ended up waiting about 4 months after my 7th try and stuck with an old 17" CRT until I finally ended up with this monitor that I'm happy with.

With your luck it prob will. I've been through many LCDs and none have been buzzers, but then again I cannot really think of a larger LCD that has not had one report of buzzing by some unlucky soul. Still some like Westy 24" are well known for being far more frequent offenders.

My Dell E248WFP makes low frequency noise, but the older 2007WFP i own is absolutely quiet.

Sorry to hear about your luck.

BenQ G2400W is completely quiet at any and all brightness even with my ear jammed up against the cooling vents.

The Westinghouse L2410NM is bee-level buzzy at any brightness below 98 from within 2 feet away.

The NEC LCD2690WuXi is fairly quiet. The BenQ FP241VW is fairly quiet too. I have to listen to those at the vents to hear anything.

My Dell 2005FPW makes no noises at all at any brightness.

Hope that helps,

10e

wow i always thought my ears were really good but maybe not. or maybe you're just terribly unlucky? i've got a 245BW and a smaller 931BW for the wife in the same room and i don't hear a thing from them. i've also gone though 3 226BW's and a w2207 none of which buzzed at all - returned for other reasons.

I've got two LG L246WPs and never heard a peep from them. That would be so annoying if they buzzed.

I currently have 5 lcds in my bedroom, and 2 of them (both dell 2001fps) make noise. The caps squeal every time my computer goes into standby and shuts them off. Aside from that, they're all quite, but I've heard it on other monitors. I think it's a fairly normal thing for some of them.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I suppose I just need to keep trying until I get one right. It will happen someday. I would say the monitor is probably just as important to get right as the keyboard and mouse -- luckily, I have good ones of those.

I'm curious, have you tried connecting the monitor to a UPS or power filter device? I used to have a buzzing sound on my monitor, and especially my stereo, until I hooked them both up to UPS devices. Now neither one of them make any noise ever, and I only regret that I did not do it sooner. Worth a try if you have not tried already.

Hi,

Well, I have it plugged into one of those "protectors" that plug directly into the outlet making your 2 plug outlet into a 6 plug outlet. It was already there in the house I am renting, and it seems like it is built into the wall. You know what I am talking about?

Like this: http://www.summitsource.com/6-outle...-110-joules-part-intermatic-eg63c-p-6990.html

Right now I have the monitor, the MacBook Pro and my external hard drive plugged into that. I have 3 available plug-ins remaining.

Should I try plugging it into something else?

Thanks.

ive never had a buzzing problem. You sure its your monitor and not ur ears playing tricks on you? Maybe your a robot....

Well, I wish it was just me. Actually, no I don't because then I would be having physical problems -- and that is much worse. People have this problem as seen by some of the replies here.

I am pretty sure it is the monitor.

Unfortunately, that is just a power replicator and is not doing anything to filter the power outside of possibly protecting you against large power surges. I plugged my computer/monitor into this Belkin UPS which has AVR (active voltage regulation) technology. In my living room, I don't have battery backup capability but I spent a lot less on a 10-outlet Belkin PureAV that I picked up at my local SAM's Club for $40. It has Power Filter Technology (PFT) as listed on the device description and works really well to eliminate the 'noise' from my stereo.

Thanks so much for the information!

If I may ask one more question. Could I plug in something like the 10-outlet Belkin into the 6-outlet power replicator? Would that cause any problems? The 6-outlet power replicator is literally built into the wall, and since I am renting, I am in no position to take it out.

Thanks.

Yes, it appears from the description that the Power Sentry Experion is equivalent to the Belkin PureAV that I purchased. The key phrase is "advanced ClearConnect power conditioning technology" that tells me the power is filtered and clean(er) power is supplied to your devices.

My Dell 1801FP was silent, as was its companion Syncmaster 740B. My 20WMGX2 seems to only make noise when it's in low-power mode (not turned off) and sounds like a faint capacitor whine. It's enough to keep me awake at night in a silent room unless I turn the monitor off.

I've had a very loud fluorescent-like buzz coming from my cheap 19" Acer monitor I bought a while back whenever the brightness was less than 100%. It didn't matter which computer or power outlet I plugged it into - or which UPS (or lack therof) I used. I returned it for replacement exchange and the new one had the exact same problem. I returned that to the manufacturer to repair and it returned unfixed. I gave up afterward.

It could just be a design flaw that makes a particular model more susceptible to buzzing noise. I know none of the other LCD monitors I've used ever had noise aside from some very minor electrical noise.

All I really want now is a monitor that looks good (i.e. the same quality and crispness that I have on my MacBook Pro built-in LCD screen), and that doesn't buzz.

I am afraid to buy a monitor online because of all the problems I have had -- so I am a bit limited to what I can buy in a store.

I hope I can resolve this soon.

I fear many monitors have such problems. And especially these new large expensive super LCDs. NEC 2690 actually produces TWO different noises at once. I'm not sure I'm willing to spend more money on a UPS, especially because I think the manufacturer should make the monitors quiet.

I have an LG L246WP and no buzzing at all. Good advice on trying a line condition as it could be your home's electrical system. You might also want to try a different DVI cable or VGA cable, whichever you are using.

This sounds to me like a power problem. Try plugging directly into the wall and see if that helps. Do you have any lights on dimmers in the house? Sometimes they will cause noisy power.

You might even try bringing the monitor to a friend's house and see if it does the same thing.

My opinion is that "a lot" of monitors buzz/whine , most people does not hear this ,especially if they have a computer standing nearby. The common denominator is that monitors are silent on 100% brightness and buzz on lower settings. The only monitor larger than 20" I have found silent is the Apple Cinema HD 23" probably due to lack of ventilation fins.I have tried more than 10 different monitors so far and my next is probably going to be a BenQ G2400W as it´s probably possible to run this at 100% brightness.

Good luck finding a silent one.

I disagree. I've gone through 3 Apple 23" displays and they all buzz below 100% brightness, as do ALL ACDs of any size at by university. My 2 old LG246wp also buzzed in sRGB mode, as does my friend's Samsung 226bw, though quietly. The Apple displays hum rather than buzz, and it annoys the crap out of me. I leave it running at full brightness because of it. If you don't hear it, it's because you have other ambient sounds like computer fans etc. I just have my Macbook pro connected to mine.

I live in a house on the countryside with the computer in another room and NO other sources of sound around, I did not hear it. But hearing is a very subjective thing and I do not question you hearing that buzz.We do agree that monitors buzz/hum/whine.I live in Sweden where we have 220V 50Hz power. I don´t know if this can affect the noise.

I think manufacturers just don't try enough to make quiet monitors. Why would they? Most people don't care BEFORE buing a monitor and reviewers rarely judge this aspect of LCDs. In the most cases it is just a bad design of power sources.

My Dell 3007wfp-hc buzzes. With brightness on high it is a barely noticeable buzz, but anything below high the buzz gets more irritating. My only disappointment with this monitor.
