We received three Netgear gbit switches and the first time I've dealt with a web interface. They're nice switches but one thing I noticed is that you cannot change the default VLAN on the IP management interface. The only workaround I did was changing the native VLAN from 1 to xxx on the Cisco switch it's trunked to. Now we're looking at returning these switches and getting switches where you can change the VLAN on the IP management interface - and my question is, can you do that with the 1800-24g?

Juuuuust out of curiosity, what Netgear switches did you have? GS724T or a variant? Cause you can change the default VLAN with that switch (I own two).

But to answer your question, you can on the HP too.

Yeah, the GS724TP is what we have. I must have spent about 3 hours trying to figure out how to change the VLAN on the IP management interface and I can't for the life of me figure it out.

It'd be nice if they put a VLAN option under "IP Interface."

Yes. You couldn't originally, but they added that ability with a firmware upgrade. I have a 1800-24g and 2 1800-8g switches.

Okay, now I have the GS724T, but I assume it's the same.

- Go to the VLAN settings page
- Create a new VLAN (drop down menu > Add new VLAN)
- Change to the settings page for that VLAN (drop down menu > your vlan ID)
- Click on the white boxes for the ports that you want on this VLAN. I assume you will want to click on them twice (until you get a 'U'), unless you want 802.1x tags on the packets.
- Apply (not sure if you need to do this yet)
- Drop down menu > PVID settings
- Now you can make the new VLAN the default VLAN for the ports you want to change (enter the corresponding VLAN ID in the table)
- Now that the ports you wanted to move no longer have a default PVID on VLAN 1, you can remove them from that VLAN
ie:
- Change to the settings page for that VLAN (drop down menu > 1)
- Click on the white boxes for the ports that you want off this VLAN. Click till the box it white (no U or T).

I know this is a little awkward, but it is really only three steps and you can do as many ports at a time as you want.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for that but my question is, will this change the VLAN for the management IP interface? What you're saying will change the VLAN for interfaces 1-24.

For example, the router has a default IP of 192.168.0.239 on VLAN 1 by default. Unfortunately they don't have a VLAN option under "IP Interface" where you can set this. Seeing as how I didn't see it there I assumed Netgear didn't put this option in with their OS.

The only way that I know how to have the Netgear pass tagged packets over VLAN 200 (for example) is to change the native VLAN ID from 1 to 200 on the Cisco 2950 that it's hooked into. Obviously that's not really the best way of doing things because anything plugged into the Netgear that I want on the 200 VLAN will be put under VLAN 1. I want to get rid of that confusion if possible. And this is why I prefer CLI over web based switches. :/

I was worried that might be what you meant... Your wording was kind of ambiguous.

...I don't think there is an answer for you then, unfortunately. Have you tried upgrading the firmware? Although I have no reason to believe they added that.

I'll try that now.

Thanks.
