Mass Effect Copy Protection An Opportunity To Use The Adjective 'Draconian'

Ha, I beat you by a minute ;)

The article also says Spore is going to use the exact same system.

Agreed. Had I known that about BioShock I wouldn't have bought it either. Until they change their copy protection, I'll pass on both games.....which sux since i'm sooooo looking forward to Spore....:(

I think we all know there will be a way around it in less than 24 hours after the release of both.
I don't like it, but it won't keep me from buying either.

So, pardon this question, but what's the big deal about it?
If you bought it, and it wants to verify itself, who cares?

QFT

Half-Life 2 verifies every single time you start the game up. How is 10 days bad?

I do. I don't mind one verification - but every 10 days? I refused to buy Bioshock on any platform because of the included "protection", and it looks like I will miss out on Mass Effect and Spore too.

Despite the fact that most of this copy protection software causes instability issues on almost every game it's included with, nothing really.

The truth of the matter, for me, is that any game could verify itself every time I start it up, and it wouldn't make a bit of difference, because A) my computers are always connected, and B) almost every game I have automatically checks for updates on startup anyway.

I don't like the more heavy-handed direction that the industry is taking any more than the next guy, but I disagree that this particular scheme is all that drastic.

Hurts performace too.

I remember getting over 10fps increase with Morrowind using the cracked "No-CD" exe over the original one

It's funny, but these software companies will never learn. The more hassle they put everyday legit users through, the more they will turn to the easier cracked software. All of this over-the-top software protection punishes people who buy and install the vanilla game.

edit. didnt check the link above, maybe they are learning

"Spore is similarly planned to take advantage of the SecuROM copy protection system, one that we're sure is going to eliminate every illegitimate copy of the game from appearing on torrent trackers for at least 48 hours. Take that, piracy! RIP! Owned! Etc!"

I'm not advocating anything, but piracy always wins in the end.
