Console games just cost too much...

$60 is a lot for a single game.

Depends what game, and if someone doesn't want to pay $60 for a game, they should get on Ebay or something. People can be so stingy, wow $60 for one game, also kinda depends how many games you're buying, $15-30/month($60 game every 2 or 4 months), really doesn't sound like alot to me, plenty of people spend hundreds on cable/satellite TV each month .

Learn to budget. Cost me $55 for GTAIV, and im sure games 4 years ago cost the exact same.

gta4 was free for me, because I traded in old games I no longer played.
Thats something you can't do with pc games

Let's see. $60 for GTA4

Total game play time: 20 hours/ish (on the low side)

3 dollars an hour for tons of fun? Sounds like all sorts of cheap full of win to me....

Since we are on the price subject....

Why aren't 360 games cheaper than ps3 games, since blue-ray discs are used for ps3 compared to cheaper dvds for 360?

because the cost of the physical media is essentially next to nothing for either company and contributes almost nothing to the price?

"consoles games cost too much."

lol

that's because you probably buy games that suck like superman or bomberman.

I have a 360 and only two games: forza 2 and gta 4.

I bought forza 2 when it first came out, payed close to $70 for it and have put in hundreds of hours.

gta4 $60, if you play for 60 hours that $1 an hour, if you play for 120 hours it's 50 cents an hour.

like i said, you must buy horrible games for $60 that take 10 hours to beat and have no replay value.

next time go over to gamespot and read the reviews before purchasing!

Or just rent the game first? Consoles DO have that option...

I used to be a big console game fan, I played the games so much it was like a 2nd full time job.

As console gaming became more popular, the prices should have come DOWN (not up) as the quantity of sales grew massively. Economies of scale.

"but the production costs have gone up" - whatever, you think they need to charge $60 per copy to make a profit? Hardly.

So, I haven't bought a new console system since the PS2 and I haven't bought a single new console game in years.

I wish there weren't so many sheep that just run out with the herd and buy the latest game the first day everytime something new comes out, so we could drive the prices down :(

Wow mate... count your blessings.

In Australia we're playing 100+ per game (GTAIV is $130). COD4 was $120 on release.

Go figure. The Australian dollar buys 98 us cents, but we still pay double what you do. gg.

Games on the shelf up where I'm at (isolated arctic community) can hit $120 CAN easily. I'm forced to use Amazon.ca for most of my purchases. I've never had any problem paying full price for a game, my living situation is balanced and as long as I let my girlfriend buy clothes and movies, I can buy my games.

If the games aren't worth $60 to you anymore, maybe it's time to find a new hobby. Because, like quite a few people on this board. It seems to me that games have gone down in price since the 80's-90's when you had to pay $60 for a Gameboy game and up to $75 for a NES.

I don't think that anyone replying has come close to addressing my arguments such as about economies of scale, and the fact that production costs of the physical media have plummeted to almost zero.

None the less, there are always exceptions, of course, some games, to some people, are going to be a great value. I haven't had a chance to see GTA4 yet (sadly, they don't have it on demo at the game store ?!?) but maybe it would be one of the exceptions.

If I still had my old friends around who I used to play Tekken with (or, if I can find new ones who love it) Tekken 6 would be a great value to me, at $60. But, that would just be one, maybe two great games that have a lot of replay value and remain fun for months, if not years.

There is one bottle of wine that I would pay $300 to buy, and, when I drank it, it would only last less than an hour. But, that is a rare exception. The few games that I really LOVE, I would grudingly pay $60 for, but that's too much for the average console game, for sure.

On the topic of value of games compared to other entertainment...

WTF?!? I just saw Bluray movies at Target are $30 - holy crap that's a bad deal, makes $60 games look like a steal. wtf wtf wtf... Movies (DVD, Bluray, whatver) shouldn't be more than $15...

I think games for our Vectrex Game system cost around $40 back in 1982. I am thinking that that was waaay more expensive than $60 for GTA IV.

So are you suggesting that we price point games, based on quality and not a set standard. Review the game first and then set the price based on length, quality and innovation. I think we are simply at a time when "consumer beware" makes perfect sense, you can't simply grab a game off of the shelf and expect it to be an exceptional product simply because it costs just shy of $100.

We need to make sure to research our purchases first. It's not the developers job to make sure that everyone likes the games they make. They are simply setting the price to what average games sell for. While you wouldn't pay $60 for the game, obviously somebody will.

And, can people stop spewing this crap about PC games being cheaper, or even "better for the money". First think about all the upgrades you've had to make to play a certain game at playable settings. The PC while my first game platform of choice has gotten lost in its own ego. People are willing to shell out ridiculous amounts of money to get a bit crisper of an image with the latest video card or a little bit more response with the beloved M&KB. With the price people pay to constantly improve their rigs, they should be getting games for free.

Finally, it's an industry. These are business's that need to keep a float and if they have set the value of said game at $60. Buy it, or don't buy it. As a consumer you have the choice.

When games were $39, I was buying a lot, many more than I could ever finish. When they bumped up to $49, I only bought a few a year NEW, just started being patient for titles to enter the Used Game market. Now at $59, I am almost strictly a used game buyer. I understand gaming budgets are up, but that means nothing to my budget.

Except for games that I know off the bat that I'll love (Tekken 6, GT5 (Gran Turismo 5), and any version of Urban Terror) I read probably 4 - 5 reviews before buying, and on top of that, I would like to be able to try a playable demo of any game before I buy it. Even with the games that I know I'll love I STILL read a few reviews about them before I buy them just because I am eager to find out about them.

If you have bought only two games, and get plenty of enjoyment out of your system with those two games, than I don't have anything but respect for what you've done.

System price + $120 for two games = beautiful, hi-res, high performance games for substantially less than a gaming PC, + lots of fun, seems like a good deal to me.

Some games are "worth" $60, sure, but, they don't need to be priced that high to make a fair profit for the company selling them, and, most people w/consoles will buy many more than two games EVEN IF they are the sorts of people that have to forclose on their mortgage because they "can't afford" to make the payments.

+1

I used to buy a couple games every month, now, I down to an average of 1 a year for the past few years. I'd like to play GTA IV, I'd like to play the latest Soul Calibur, I'd like to play Tekken 6 (when it comes out) - I would buy it even though I'm too busy to play it much.

Off topic: What I really miss is: arcades. There's a "Game Works" here, they have Tekken 5 but one of the joysticks doesn't work in one direction and the location is in the suburbs. Wish we had a little arcade on campus, if there was, then I'm sure I could find people to play Tekken against there... There's something cooler about being out in a public arcade, rather than just playing at home in front of your TV with the same few friends every time. I know there's online, but then, you're even more isolated, in terms of having actual other people around you.

Learn to budget. Cost me $55 for GTA IV, and im sure games 4 years ago cost the exact same.

I bought Quake II within a month of it's release for $39. Same with Doom III. Almost all the games that I've paid more than $40 for have been major disappointments.

If I had a PS3, I would buy Tekken 6, even if I did have to pay $50, or more.

I'd be happy to buy Assassin's Creed II for $39, but I don't know if it's out for PC yet?

I would also buy the new updated Street Fighter IV - I believe that's releasing at under $40 retail?

You obviously werent around in the NES, SNES, or even Atari days. Prices of games pale in comparison inflation wise compared to many, many, many household items, or things in our daily lives

Damn straight! I think the SNES/Megadrive era was the most expensive....I remember forking out £75 for SF2 Special Champion Edition for Megadrive when it was first released. Thank fuck those days have passed.

Who pays $60 for games. Stop buying them release day. I don't pay more than $40. List of games I've recently bought and prices:

Borderlands PC - $33.75
MW2 PC - $40
Assassin's Creed 2 - $40

This holiday season has been huge for snagging new releases at $15 or $20 off.

L4D2, COD:MW2, Borderlands, Assassins Creed II, DJ Hero, and a bunch of PS3 titles that I can't think of. I only bought MW2, but normally I would have plunked down for more of those and now I'm glad I didn't.

Buy used games and resell them after you're done, wait for games to go on sale, or just rent them with Gamefly and buy the ones you plan on playing more than once.

It's what I do and I save a lot of money. Buying every game for full price isn't necessary.

Who pays $60 for games.
*raises hand*

My last console was a PSone, so you can imagine my shock when the cashier @ target asked for $ixty-Five dollar bucks. Fortunately I got it price matched later to $43. Then I bought MW2 for $45. Considering they're both going to get A LOT of multiplayer love, I'm fine w/ that price.

Although I haven't figured out what I'm going to do about the single player games. I'm thinking rentals...sometimes I get $5 Blockbuster coupons.

In Canada, new PS3 games run $70 and stay that way until they hit classic. KZ2 just went down to $50

I just got a PS3, and I went out to a few places and I was surprised that so many games were still selling at 59.99. I guess I'm just spoiled by the super fast depreciation of PC game prices.

Not even that. Fry's, release day, $39.99...always. Oh well, the deals are there for the consoles, just have to be patient's all.

Whats with the zombie threads lately?

Is anybody else tired of people that complaining about "old threads"?

Sometimes old threads are better than new threads.

Is it no longer a relevant topic? If that is the case for you, in particular, then, why would you look in my thread, much less post in it?

Anyway, thank you for not stooping to personal attacks. I guess I am a little oversensitive about this issue - that's why my reply might be a little out of line, but, not uncivil, I hope.

Thank you for your post. :)

Nintendo 64 games cost just as much over 15 years ago.

In the case of old school game carts they [the physical media] cost more than 10x as much to manufacture. The market was MUCH smaller. In most consumer product industry, volume affects pricing. Once goods become common, it is not atypical for a reduction in price by 5 - 10 fold, or even 100 fold.

Example: "The BD-P1000 ($999.99 list), will go on sale June 25th, making it the first Blu-Ray player to hit the market."

Years later...: "
Samsung BD-P1590 Blu-Ray disc player... - $140 new, $100 used"

A few years in the future, we'll probably see a $49.95 one.

If you pay full price for a game its probably because you cant wait.

Games always go on sale. Always.

Unless its a must have on my list, i always wait atleast a month.. theres bound to be a sale with 20 dollars off or a used copy at gamestop

I buy when there on sale at Amazon,Target,Gamestop,Bestbuy,Fry's and steam.

Borderlands PC - $20
MW2 PC - $30
Fight Night Round 4 PS3 - $15
Tekken 6 PS3 - $20
L4D2 PC - $50 To high i no couldn't wait for price drop.

Thats pretty idiotic of you to say..Money is of NO issue to me and I think $60 per game is too expensive.Especially since games are full of advertising and companies like MS giving Rockstar a 50 million dollar"bonus"..Why couldnt GTA4 for example been lower??

Of course,if youre living home with Mom and dont get laid on a regular $60 isnt a big deal..

In Canada I have seen Assasins Creed II for $73.99 at one store and out dollar is almost on par with the U.S. dollar. When I see those kind of prices on a console game I just walk away shaking my head. And I can afford to pay that price but I am not stupid with my money and is why I won't ever pay those kinds of prices. If the game was $59.99 I would have probably bought it but it was a lost sale for them because they attempted to rip me off. I'm a patient man and I will get that game eventually and for way less than $73.99.

I have such a backlog in games I can wait til the prices come down to the 30 range IE I just got Fable 2 for 23, perfect cus now I have the time to get to it.IT usually does me no good to get a game as soon as it comes out,one exception will be Mag I got addicted in the BETA .

its really simple for me, i buy maybe two games a year, i only buy those i really will play over and over, so far the only game i have seriously played for years now is Forza 2 and now 3....recently picked up a used copy of Gears of War which i already owned once and sold, because a friend of mine is getting it from me for christmas and i wanted to be able to play online with him, but aside from that exception, Forza installments keep me occupied for a few years at a time, so games cost is no big deal

Only 2 games per year? I wish I had that kind of self control. Every weekend I spend hours browsing Steam, GamersGate, Impulse, and D2D and quite often find bargains on games that I buy and never would if the price wasn't so good. Last night I bought the UFO Trilogy pack from GamersGate for $9.95.
That's 3 games for ten bucks. How can I pass that up even if I never play them? I can't.

With every game being $70 CAD for me, I've stopped buying them...at least new except for one or two (although they are getting much less every year) because in 3-4 months they are half price it seems used and sometimes new now as they have so many titles and the shelf space stays the same.
