LG L246W

What color temp setting are you using on the monitor? I recommend using sRGB and then set the brightness on the monitor between 20-40 (higher if you use it in a bright room). You need to adjust contrast and gamma via your video card control panel. In both cases, I needed to lower gamma and contrast a bit to bring out more shadow detail in games and images. Use this site as a guide to help you:

Thanks for the reply, I'll give it a try. BTW I was using sRGB then followed the spyders recommendation of doing it under the monitors reset, which defaults to 6500.

So after my old post about burn-in, it still isn't fixed. I'm doomed with it.

It REALLY sucks, and is very noticeable in video games (panning the cameras and such)

I bought this around 6 or so months back (no warranty).. I love it, but I can't stand the burn in anymore. Is there any way I could call LG up and get a replacement? Or anything at all?

Guys, I have been debating buying one of these things for a couple weeks... is it worth $599 plus $22 shipping (no tax)? It is new in box with full 3-year warranty...? Today is probably the last day for me to pull the trigger. I mean, is there any other monitor out that can compare with this thing for the price?

-Thanks

Soo how many months out of those six did you leave it on desktop for that to happen? Just give LG a call and try to get an RMA started saying the screen is messed up, although I would not say burn-in, even thought that should be only in the realm of plasmas.

is there a fix for the problem where this monitor doesnt come out of standby/sleep mode? im running vista64

From what I can remember, about 1 or so.

But now, just recently, 2 new burned in lines have appeared. Vertical and thin, they look like something from a 4:3 ratio. I have NO clue what those are from, and especially since I've been so anal about burn-in, and have had a steady blank black screensaver on set after 3 minutes.

From what I've read, the NVIDIA aspect scaling feature doesn't work and never will under Windows Vista for the 8800 series cards. People said it used to work on the older 97.xx drivers but I find that hard to believe. Setting up a custom screen resolution under the latest 174.74 driver doesn't resolve the problem.

The only workaround that I've found is to use the 1:1 feature on this monitor if you don't want 4:3 screen resolutions getting stretched. 1600x1200 works well with the 1:1 option and only shows black bars on the sides.

I just wanted to update this post with more information from a post I found at 3DGuru:

IF you have vista, and you have an HDMI connected monitor. You will never ever ever get scaling to work ever ever again.

IT is not a bug. It is bluray-hddvd copy protection hdmi compliance. If your card and monior are hdcp compliant, which is something you need to play hd content. forget about scaling ever ever again.

your only hope is to use monitor scaling and buy a monitor that allows for 1:1 pixel.

Actually if you care about IQ and gaming, nope not at the moment. Its either one or the other with anything else besides a BenQ with a crazy stand.

hmm, sounds like allot of normal aspect movies. 90% of the time I have my computer running its with a TV tuner thats 4:3 so I could understand how it could happen. Although thin is confusing. Either way burn in is just not something you should have to deal with, give LG a mouthful.

Can anyone speak to LGs SWAP advance exchange program? I'm considering doing this with my defective monitor (see this thread) rather than getting an exchange from where I purchased it. Unfortunately, if I exchange it at the place I bought it, I'll have to pay return shipping to CA from NC, be without a monitor for quite a while, and risk them not accepting the exchange. Supposedly they have a "technician" verify each return for exchange, and I'm concerned they may not be able to replicate the issue.

With their SWAP program, they put a hold on a credit card, then remove it when the defective monitor is received. This seems reasonable. Has anyone done this? Did it go smoothly?

I'm also concerned about what I'll receive as a replacement. I absolutely want another L246WP. Will this be an issue? I'm also concerned I'll receive a refurbished unit, which kind of makes me think I'd have an increased liklihood of receiving one with dead/stuck pixel(s).

Thoughts all around?

guru, i RMAd the open box L246WP-BN i got from circuit city due to 3 dead pixels. I didnt do the swap program, i simply waited for them to send me a new one. They dont have any new monitors left, so you'll have to settle for a reconditioned unit. Insist upon getting the same monitor, even if its reconditioned. The unit i received back was in perfect physical condition, and had no dead pixels. I'm perfectly satisfied.

Thanks for the input Steve. I suppose I'd be OK with reconditioned/remanufactured, as long I I still get the same model monitor. After looking over this thread a bit, it seems a few (maybe only one?) are reporting that LG doesn't have any L246s anymore at all.

How long ago did you do this RMA?

about a month and a half ago

Just thought I'd let anyone following the situation with the warranty returns that LG is apparently now completely out of both new and refurb L245/246s.

Despite very clearly stating that I didn't want anythign shipped to me other than a L245/246, I of course ended up with a W2452T. Several calls to LG this morning confirms that they are indeed out of stock of the L245s and L246s both new and refurbished.

damn, glad i got my reconditioned l246wp while i could! sorry about your luck.

Heh. So I just browsed all 75 pages, hoping to find out if this panel was an IPS panel. I ctrl+f'd every page for "ips", and there was no definitive answer.

So i'm guessing this is a PVA panel? Although it states 178 viewing angles on newegg?

P-MVA, although possibly A-MVA too as LG was popping out L245WP long after AUO made their last P-MVAs. Dell and every other manufacturer with PVA/MVA and no problems claiming 178/178 besides soyo, and thats likely just because they jumped straight to TN after months of MVA without changing the model name.

I JUST HAVE TO SAY, I AM THOROUGHLY DISAPPOINTED WITH LG and probably will not make a purchase from them ever again.

WHY???? Because the LG246WPBN with a PMVA lcd panel is no longer available and it's replacements are only TN panels.

I dont know what kind of logic they are using at LG but I'm sure I'm not the only one here who's extremely disappointed with whats happened here. People want a good quality panel especially when you get in to this size or above. GIVE US PMVA OR SIPS LG!!!!!

By the way LG, if you are reading this??? You WILL NOT GET ANY MORE MONEY FROM ME to buy one of those cheap ass TN panels.

at least they change the model number instead of just swapping in cheaper panels after awhile like certain companies. they bait you with a mva or ips then switch to tn later.

Anyone buy one of these from Newegg lately? I was just curious as to if it was ver 1.7? Did anyone find a way to update the firmware yet...?

-Thanks

Okay, I couldn't resist anymore... I just bought the last one Newegg had in stock :D

Hopefully this thing will be everything I am hoping for :p

BTW, Does anyone know what the power input jack (to the left of the HDMI port) is for...?

-Thanks

It's actually a DC-out jack and I believe it is for the speakers that don't come with this model. The manual on the CD shows a picture of the audio connection from the speakers to the monitor along with the power cable from that jack going to the speakers. The model that comes with the speakers is L246WPM.

If you game you will love this monitor. I'll say it again to use sRGB mode for best contrast ratio and picture. The other color temp modes make the picture look washed out unless this was fixed with later units. Adjust color, contrast and gamma via the video card control panel and you're set.

I bought a 245WFP in Europe (Netherlands), manufacturing date on the back of the display is April 2008. Seems to me like it was in production until quite recently (it was not available in most online shops over here though).

Edit: revision is 1.7.

I'm getting horrible banding on the gametrailers website, but it's part of their theme (on purpose) not the monitor's fault. Similar results with GameSpot, however it's much less. Don't really see any banding at all.

I got horrible banding when tweaking with the Nvidia control panel. Resetting it and fine tuning through the monitor fixed it.

nope, 16:9 1080p computer monitors are just about unheard of, pretty much everything for computers is 16:10 while TVs are 16:9. Good luck trying to find 1080p TV and non horrid IQ under 28 inches though. As long as it has HDMI or DVI it should be fine to use as a monitor though.

thanks for clearing that up :)

Just got mine from Newegg today... date is April 2007 and firmware is ver 1.44. This makes me sick... I was expecting ver 1.70?!?! I called LG's tech support and they acted like jack-asses. Does anyone know of ANY way to update the firmware...? If not, this thing is going back to Newegg tomorrow.

-Thanks

What's so special about version 1.7? What was fixed from version 1.4?

contrast and white level issues. However it was an hit or miss problem not effecting every panel, 1.7 seems to have hammered it out though.

Hey... does anyone use a good HDMI switch for this thing? I got a "terk" 3 port switch from best buy, and everytime I switch back to the computer from the ps3 it goes into "HDMI power save mode" and won't come back on until I reboot the pc (with the switch on that port)

what gives? The switch or the monitor? :(

Likely the switch function is the problem, I've had similar problems with my DVI switch and 2407wfp. HDMI switches are likely using audio line as a live trigger like KVM switches use mouse/keyboard. Even if it has power from another machine being on, my DVI KVM will pretend to not see my powermac as it has no ps/2 input as its own. I had to move the mouse output from my AMD PC to the Macs inputs to make the switch even notice it.

Thanks. I take it this firmware is not available for download?

I remember double checking it out a few months ago out for another forum member. It is odd and annoying as there is a USB-in and LG could just be being lazy.

I recently received my L246WP-BN from newegg, and its firmware is 1.440. The only problem I notice is that white levels 254 and 255 are indistinguishable (basically, banding at 254-255). Since I won't be using this monitor for photography, and the picture is very impressive otherwise, I'm definitely keeping this monitor. No dead pixels, no backlight bleed, great color.

Hmm, I seem to be noticing image persistence on this panel. Has anyone else noticed this? is it common on this monitor? I've barely even used it, but when I move dark windows and expose a light background, I can see persistence.

not here, but I've heard of burn in like symptoms after a few months of use. Very odd.
