I would appreciate it if someone could recommend a heatsink for me. This is my first build so hopefully it is one that is easily installed. I would also prefer that it is available on New Egg. Here are my specs.

+ AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition
+ Biostar TA770 Motherboard

Thanks in advance.

Let us know if you can tell a difference between your macbook and your desktop. ;)

enginurd: haha, the macbook will be paying for parts. ;) thanks for the help and expect a lot more questions. i might actually go intel now ... allendale 2.4ghz is about the same price.

engingurd: i was looking at the dfi blood iron and the 2.2/2,4 allendale at the same price as the 5000+. For a little extra I could get the 2mb of L2 cache. I am still undecided.

clark_carty: thank you. that looks like one serious heatsink.

The Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro or the CM Hyper TX2 are both good enough to max out any Allendale chip (around 3.4GHz). If you go with a Conroe or wolfdale, you'll want something better (since their max is much higher).

The blood iron is a good choice, especially for OC'ing.

In the GenHard FAQ, there's a bunch of links regarding the impact of the L2 cache on gaming performance. Basically, if you're on a budget, one of the E2000 series chips wouldn't be much slower than an E4000 series. Check 'em out.

enginurd: you have been extremely helpful. it's looking like i am going to go with intel over amd and dfi over biostar. on a side note, the 8800gts's have dropped so much in price that it's looking like i could build an excellent budget gaming system. i will be sure to post my build when i figure out all the components.

The artic freezer pro supposedly does have thermal pad and if it does no you will not have to apply the artic silver once installed the thermal pad just melts over the hot CPU the TX2 also employs the thermal pad.

Neither use thermal pads. They both have pre-applied thermal compound. The newer versions ship with Arctic Cooling MX-2, which is a great alternative to Arctic Silver 5. AS5 is easier to spread, but MX-2 is non-conductive. They both do a great job if applied correctly. If you'd rather not use the pre-applied TIM (thermal interface material) or there is too much of it pre--applied, you can use a plastic credit card, some 90%+ Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol, and a coffee filter (poor man's lint-free cloth) to clean off some or all of the thermal paste.

Somone told me you only need as much paste as a grain of rice is that right or is that BS??
