GTA 4: PS3 or 360?

They'll never allow full installs (i.e. No disc). It would turn into a massive security hole overnight.

That does makes sense. They should install 80% and access the other 20% of the data randomly from the disc during gameplay then. When the disc's not being accessed, however, SLOW THE DAMN DRIVE DOWN!!!

Well a man can dream can't he ... ...? :p

I'm about 85% sure I'll be getting it for the 360. Apparently the story is amazing and the draw of extra episodes is too great for me to go with the technically better PS3 version.

Reading many reviews and comparisons, it looks like the only thing even different reviewers can agree on is that the 360 has slightly more pop-in (because of the install on PS3) while the rest of the complaints and advantages of one system or the other aren't noticeable enough for people to agree on them.

IGN said:
For those curious about SIXAXIS controls, there are in full force in GTA IV. You can guide boats, bikes and cars tilting the controller. This only works well with boats, however, as bikes are far too squirrelly for the clumsy movements of SIXAXIS control. Helicopters are also very tough to control in this fashion -- it's as if Rockstar thought they were making a game about dragons. The mini-games, particularly bowling, also work with your guided movements and handle well. If you want traditional controls, you can turn SIXAXIS off for each individual input -- from the various vehicle types to reloading guns to specific mini-games. It's worth giving SIXAXIS a shot, but most likely you will shut this off.

If you ain't in to SIXAXIS thats fine by me, but here's another added feature the PS3 comes with. I'd probably only use it for bowling :p

They said the PS3 carries a mandatory 3.6gb install for GTA4, but its worth it because of less pop-in and load times are shorter (and few and far between). I have no choice but to pickup the PS3 version, but honestly from what I've read it sounds like the better choice if you've got both consoles. I prefer the xbox360 controller though-- I have one for my PC.

Good point about the controller. If any of you are going to spend long amounts of time playing this game, be sure to take the comfort level of the controller into consideration. I don't own a PS3 (yet), but owning a PS1 and 2, for me, the 360 controller is much more comfortable for my large hands to hold for long periods of time.

Bottom line is both versions got rated a 10 by IGN so neither one sucks. Just get whatever allows you to play online with more of your friends. All this fanboyism crap is really getting old btw. Both versions have their merits.

At this point every review I've read has called the PS3 version ever so slightly better, only missing the potential for MS' exclusive DLC.
It sounds like if you care about DLC - get the 360 version. If not, go for the PS3. Some people are making mountains from molehills by saying one is significantly better. Every review has made the difference sound so minute that it's almost non-existant.
Fact is - people are loving the game, so both platforms win. It doesn't have to be a Sony vs. MS situation. What we have here is the highest rated game in a LONG time and both systems are reviewed almost identically. Everyone who owns either or both systems should be happy.

Oddly it turns out that the PS3 version is native 630p upscaled and the 360 version is native 720p. As has been said many times already... they both have positives and negatives, very little between them.

Shouldn't it look worse if upscaled?
It'll look worse in stills, yeah... but you have to remember that there's a lot of high profile games that have been upscaled sub 720p (Halo 3, Metal Gear Online, COD4 among others) and they looked fine. What's likely here is that they dropped the resolution to meet certain performance criteria and then when they got over the problems they were able to add in a few more effects etc. There's very little in it from what I've seen so far.

We'll know for certain when we see some side by side stuff after the game is released.

Really? I haven't really read much about the game, so I didn't know this. I really don't care, as it didn't bother me much in other games, that have done this. What I would like to know is if there will be a "backlash" like there was when it was discovered in Halo 3. You know, all the negative stuff from people who never played the game... :p

Probably, the fanboys love to go crazy over this sort of crap. At the end of the day the reviewers have said clearly that both versions are superb so there's no point stressing it.

If you think about it in terms of PC games, you can turn down the resolution to add certain effects (like AA or higher details) so the PS3 version might've just been like that.
Either way, in almost every review they've always mentioned that the graphics to both are so close to identical that they might as well be.
I don't care what kind of tricks are used as long as it looks good and doesn't cause something else to suffer.

How is the driving? Can you even use a wheel with this? Is force feedback supported on the PS 3 version?

The guy that analyzed the PS3's resolution thought despite having less native pixels, the lighting and atmosphere was better. He guessed that could be attributed to differences in HDR precision and post processing.

Sony Cambridge was heavily involved with Rockstar's PS3 team. This trade-off may have come from their influence. Looking at more screen shots, I'm starting to notice what people are talking about. Softer is a good word to use. The foreground and distant scenery blends smoothly. It looks realistic.

If you like pop ups, the 360 version looks like the one to get. I dont know why anyone wouldnt want, this, this, or this... Magically trees that pop up from nowhere are awesome.

What difference does it make? I'm having a hard time understanding why people are over analyzing this so much. Seriously, I'm not trying to argue I just want to know why it's a big deal. I have a 360 and considering how much GTA has improved over the PS2 /Xbox versions (which NO ONE seemed to bitch about pop-up, texture blah blah, OMG LEET(er) GRAPHIX DOOD) I'm not going to be playing the game worrying about pop-ins and "long" loading times. It's not like the game is riddled with bugs and if it is, back to the store it goes.

Seriously, someone explain this if ya can.

pop ins are kind of old generation isn´t it :). I am sure it wouldn´t matter so much that anyone feel forced to spend 400$ on a PS 3 but for those who have both probably want the best version :) I would be pretty pissed if I hit that invisible tree. But then I run mostly PC games and you can just increase the draw distance to your liking there with the previous GTA titles.

That's not the retail version and it's being played on a devkit... you should probably have continued reading the thread to see the gifs from people that have the one we'll be playing.

Edit - Just for fairness... here's a couple of gifs posted by people running the retail version on the 360 (you know, the one customers get):

No... I don't see any magically appearing tree either.

Well I can afford a PS3 but I'd have to be borderline retarded to buy one just to compare GTA4.

I guess my mystery goes unsolved for now. :( Ah well, I hope to have fun with the game either way. I'm sure I won't be playing the game wondering how the PS3 experience is when I'm getting ran over by some 14-yr tool online in a multiplayer game. :D

interesting how everyone is dieing to play the multiplayer, I'm looking forward to the single player the most.

Yes, spend 500 dollars, plus 60 for the game, so that you can have slightly less texture popup. A feature of all of the GTA games that made the series so popular in the first place. What excellent logic.

That what I did.... But then again I didn't have a console.

Let me get this straight, are you saying that pop up in the previous GTA games made them more popular!!??

Actually your twisting what I said, he wanted to know exactly what all the fuss is about between the two versions (PS3 and 360) and the only real way to know that, is to experience it for yourself. Keep the better console of the two and sell the other, thanks for the compliment. :p

I've actually been debating whether I should sell my 360 and get a ps3. I'm a huge socom fan (confrontation is released in sept.) and somewhat of a MGS fan (June, obviously). the problem, though, is I stand to lose money and i'll probably not gain much. But I guess i'll have to buy a ps3 at some point...

I just wish there were more games out for it!

.... you've got to be kidding me. There are more than enough games out for the PS3 now.

BTW.. just tried playing WarHawk online with 4 player split screen with buddies... very fun :)

You do realise this is May 2008, not 2007.....

Logic? Calling pop up a feature  Nice way to twist the negatives!! I'm sure it wouldn't have been a 'feature' if it was the other way round!!

eh, yeah, there are a lot of games I guess. But I guess what I meant to say is there doesn't seem to be as many showcase type games out yet. 2008 remains a big year for the ps3 as far as that goes.

Honestly, the only games out right now that i'd buy would be MLB:the show and gta iv (i'd probably rent resistance and see how I liked it).

What are other "must haves" on the ps3 that i cant get on the 360? This is a serious question, because frankly, i don't know much outside of socom, metal gear solid, and gran turismo (i'm hesitant about prologue).

I've had my xbox since last novemberg and i love it :)

at the time i felt it was the best buy, but if i was buying a new console today i would buy a PS3, they will probably last longer, and have alot of great games coming out for them now!

Entirely depends on what games you like mate but Uncharted, Ratchet and Motorstorm IMHO are another 3 must haves, Little Big Planet is looking very promising too.

ahh thanks. I knew about Motorstorm, but I had to check on Uncharted and R and C. I think part of the problem may be that i use gamespot.com as my "go-to" review site, and neither of those two games were scored particularly well by GS. The user scores, however, are quite high for both games...

So, in a bit of a reversal of my earlier comment, perhaps the ps3 has a decent number of quality games already out.

Anyway, i'm still debating whether or not i want to swap out my 360 for a ps3 right now.I know the sixaxis controller is getting replaced, but i'm not sure if that should factor into my decision or not (supposedly, it's compatible with confrontation).

If I didn't have 2 weeks of finals, i'd probably just go ahead and buy the dang game for the 360, but since i'm forcing myself to wait, maybe i should just go ahead and sell the 360 and order a ps3.

urggh.. decisions, decisions.
